    Replacement for Altec MD19

I've had Altec MD19 studio monitor systems (15" woofer, 902/908 HF driver with a large horn). They were bought to play Steve Miller Band's Fly Like an Eagle album and have served me well for a long time, though Moody Blues, Alan Parsons, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Harmonicats (their Mack The Knife has awesome bass which the Altecs really play well), Beatles, Beach Boys, Rogers & Hammerstein soundtracks. Driven by Crown IC150 and D150. The speakers have a lot of distortion and I am told by several people who should know that they are not worth repairing. (The Crowns also need reconditioning but they are not the problem). So what to replace them with? My family room layout handles these two large speakers well. I don't care about surround I'm not sure how well a subwoofer would fit into the decor, unless it went where one of the Altecs sits. There are no corners suitable for Klipsch corner models. Budget $2k to $6k total for the speakers. What will give me the bass I am used to? Kipsch Cornwall? I have been out of the audio world since I bought the Altecs in 1978, so help is appreciated!

These Salk Veracity HT3's would be my choice for your budget. http://www.salksound.com/ht3.shtml These speakers have excellent bass. Very deep, tight with no muddiness at all. The ribbon tweeter also gives crystal clear highs.
I heard these at Frank Van Alstines house. ( www.avahifi.com is his web site.)

These Salks and the Thiel CS3.7's would be my choice of speakers after the Magnepan 3.6's.
