    Used speakers, worth it?

I have an opportunity to buy B&W 703s, 705s & matching HTM7 center speaker for 3900$. Very light use and in impeccable condition. I have the original boxes & packaging. I am building a new HT system and do not have any dealers with in 300 miles that I can listen to speakers that I have been thinking about. Monitor Audio gold, PSB Imagine, Paradigm, B&W. Any feedback would be welcomed.

I like the B&W sound, I have not heard the 700 series but like the 600 and 800 series. I don't know what the 700's sell for new. You should only pay about 3/4 of the original cost, so do some checking online and see what they go for new.

New the B&Ws would retail for:
    B&W 703 $3300
    B&W 705 $1650
    HTM7 $850
    Total $5800

At $3900 you're getting it for 2/3 it's retail which is a good price for impeccable condition... But I strongly suggest you audition them if you can before purchasing...

I agree. I see nothing inherently wrong with buying preowned speakers. Nevertheless, you should give 'em a good and thorough examination before plunking down the dough. I wrote a post a month or so ago about a pair of KEF's, describing my criteria and methods.

In the meantime, I start four or five nights (2300-0730) at the hospital tonight.....You guys behave yerselves!

Why do these 'used speaker' threads always end up with dirty talk? It wasn't me this time!

I misspoke jabroeez: The post I was referring to was a reply by a similar query sent by "tonionc". Here's the address: KEF 104.2 speakers. How do I know the condition of 20yr old speakers?. Hope it helps.

Thanks. Arrrgghhh. So, the speakers are 500 miles away. I told the guy let me get my brother in law to pick them up on the weekend because he is only 30 miles away. He sold them!! And by them I mean he only sold the mains. Why would he not wait 3 days and sell all 5......sigh. Back to searching. What do you guys think about matching a pair of 804s for the mains with the above?

Buy a new pair of 683's for the mains and 686's for the rear. This will cost less than $2K. Or look at the new PSB Imagine line.
If you want to by a pair of 800 series B&W's to use with the 700 rears, make sure you buy an 800 series center channel for good system matching. It all depends on how picky you are about your HT sound. I use Magnepan mains and a B&W center because I don't care much about HT. It works for me.
