    Official G&R Chinese Democracy thread

Some one had to do it and since I'm probably the most mainstream music listener here, not as chic as you cats who thrive on the fringe searching the dark corners for the unheard artist, feeding your ears on the unspoiled sounds of non-commercialism, keeping it real, etc. I'm already tarnished and will do the deed, sacrificing myself for your purity..

    I heard the title track. Some one sent me a My Space link to hear the album but my internet service is messed up some where and I'm not streaming very well so the link only gave me snips here and there. I know people want to snub this album and Axl is about as popular as George Bush but;
how do you like the music?
    Who has it?
    Who wants it?
Who don't want it and why?

The album is exclusive to Best Buy.

I'll become a target, so far what I've heard of the album I like. I'd like to hear more before picking it up. Any one else want to dirty themselves?

Not me. Not because I'm opposed to mainstream music, but because I just don't dig G&R. I never have. They are highly over-rated IMO. I haven't heard anything off the album so I can't comment on whether I think it's any good or not. But based on past experience I'm going to suggest that I probably won't like it. Having said that, I'm open to having my mind changed if it's any good.

I'm going to give the album a good listen. I'm pretty curious. If this dude delivers a solid album, he'll prove a lot of people wrong. I have my doubts, but we'll see.

I curious as well. I'll listen to it if its handy. Just like I listened to the last AC/DC album (and liked BTW).

As far as that fringe thing you were talking about - lots of what you'd call 'mainstream' today came from that fringe. I remember when the Police seemed like avant guard music, oh so long ago. G-n-R was one of those fringe bands. I had just picked up a Black Flag tape and my Meatmen T-shirt (band sucked but the T-shirt was cool), when I heard the tape they were playing over the store system - it was Appetite For Destruction. I left the store with that tape and played it constantly for months before they ever appeared on Headbangers Ball. But they lost me after that slapdash GnR Lies album. Thank God enough of my friends bought those Use Your Illusion albums to save me the bucks and hassle of selling them later.

As far as being over-rated, nothing concerning the accolades given to AFD is undeserved, IMO. It was a great album and '80s metal would be better off if this album is what people remembered of it. It was a yank of the hair and knee in the groin of Hair Metal and changed the landscape of metal in general, opening the doors for other 'fringe bands' like Metallica and their first mainstream hit album, And Justice For All. Hair metal bands like Poison, Ratt, Winger, et el, became a running joke after AFD, at least until the '90s, when GnR became its own running joke.

Same here, the town I was living in had a college radio station and I owned AFD almost a year before they broke big onto the sceen. Use Your Illusion's had some good stuff but they should have trimmed it down to one good album and who knows what they were thinking after that. Axl was working with guys from Zombie and Nine Inch Nails on the new album but I'm not sure specivically who. You can definitely hear that influence on the title track, some of the other tunes seem to be trying to recapture the old G&R.

If you guys hear the album all the way post your thoughts.

Sorry Feanor, no politics here. G&R is short for a little orchestral group from the 80's called Guns & Roses. I don't think they'd make your list though

So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

As long as we're reminiscing, I saw GNR twice. The first time was in Mobile, AL opening for Motley Crue in Nov. '87. We could barely hear GNR. When the Crue came out, they had speaker cabs stacked to the ceiling. It seemed to me that the Crue was throwing its weight around by not letting this upstart band blast the audience.

The second time was in Aug. '92 in New Orleans with Faith No More and Metallica. This was the tour that Hetfield had his fire incident and the guitar player for Metal Church stepped in. GNR played last and after Metallica's intense set, GNR almost got booed off the stage. Their performance was boring and sloppy. Axl got pissed and ranted because the crowd was so listless. I almost fell asleep during their rendition of the Godfather theme - "A Day in the Life of a Fool." I played that tune in middle school band with fewer wrong notes than Slash. Although the two GNR shows I saw were comical, I still like the AFD album.

I'm witchoo- I was never into G&R, and couldn't really give a sh!t about this $13 million dollar turd.

Well, I guess I'm not really witchoo, because I don't have an open mind about hearing it.

In case anyone didn't know Chinese Democracy was released on vinyl as well. You can even get a double vinyl import for twice the money at musicdirect.
