Paul Newman Favorite Films

Dedicated to paul Newman, he seem to be more comfortable playing the under dog role which he excelled at.

In chronicle order:

The Hustler (1961):With Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats as one of his rare dramatic role, he takes on new a comer.


Cool hand Luke (1967): As one of better prison drama films, Newman defy the authorities until the end -come hell or water. Memorable performance by George Kennedy.


Hombre (1967): As a tribute and contraray to John Ford's Stagecoach, the Indian save the day. Richard Boone steal every scene he is in.


Towering Inferno (1974): As one of best disaster movie ever made with a terrific all star cast, Steve McQueen and Newman battle fire and buroiocrats at site of world tallest building.


The Verdict (1982): Nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Paul Newman's performance as a down-and-out alcoholic attorney who stumbles onto one last chance to redeem himself.


Nobody’s Fool (1994): A very low key movie, family past history come to hunt Newman, he must finally come to terms with his family and take responsibilities that he has ignored for the duration of his life.

A quick story about the movie "The Verdict"....
Years ago I went on a date and we ended up seeing "The Verdict" only a day before I had to have some minor surgery. Well when I checked into the hospital around noon I was told to go to my room and wait and the anesthiaologist would be by to see me shortly. Well it's almost 6pm and nobody comes by so I go to the nurses station and they tell someone must have screwed up but if go down stairs I might be able to catch the anesthiaologist before he goes home. So I run downstairs just as the guy is leaving and he gives me a quick look up and down asks if I am in good shape and asks my weight. I tell him and he says okay and he will see me in the OR the next morning. I ask is that the extent of his "exam" because I just saw the movie "The Verdict" which is in part about an anesthiaologist who screws up and administers the wrong anesthia. He replies that is interesting and then walks out the door. Needless to say I did not get the best night's sleep.

You are right that most of my lists come from Bargain Bin DVDs since haven't had cable for a while. And another reason some movies are not mentioned is because haven't seen them.

Like couple of movies The Kid mentioned (Sting and Slapshots) that have not seen. But saw Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid a while back and thought that for a western, it was a weak entry.

Some found the overtly religious overtones of "Cool Hand Luke" a bit heavy-handed, but I loved the film. I find it hard to pick a Paul Newman "best," but there's no problem whatsoever in picking the worst: "The Silver Chalice," his first film. A silly, high stylized depiction of the silversmith selected to build a silver chalice from the cup Christ used at the last supper. I saw it in the early 50's, when I was a young child, and hated it. Then, I managed to catch it on TV many years later, and easily saw why Newman hated it so much. I also read that he'd invite friends over and "force" them to sit through a showing of it, armed with supplied pots, pans and wooden spoons as well as other assorted noisemakers. We've lost a national treasure.

I always liked "Cool Hand Luke", but more recently I reckon he was pretty good in "Road To Perdition".

Newman, his soon to be wife and Orson Welles tearing up the scenery. Ah Tennesee Williams, it just don't git any better.
