    Looking for a tuner

Hi all....I just upgraded from a NAD C320BEE integrated amp to a Sunfire Symphonic Reference amp/pre amp stack. I kept the NAD C521BEE cdp and am looking for a tuner to go with the system. The unit is powering a pair of Energy Audissey 5+2's. I guess the logical tuner would be the NAD C422, but the more I read about other tuners, the more confused I get. I'd like to keep the price at or below $500 and am looking for advice from you much more informed guys and gals. I have access to a few "hi-end" audio stores and at home tryouts are probably within my reach, but am looking to narrow the field a bit. I truly don't know much (if anything) about tuners and that's why I'm asking for help. I have a '77 Pioneer SX 1250 receiver that pulls in alot of stations with just a passive indoor antenna, and a Yamaha 5540 receiver (for HT) that gets very few stations with the same antenna, so I guess I'm looking for a tuner able to pull in weak signals (whatever that may be called). I also have a powered indoor antenna that I used with the Pioneer, but it didn't seem to work any better than the passive one, so it sits on a closet shelf (ready to be used if needed). Any opinions and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please pardon my ignorance and thank you in advance....Jack

If you don't need a remote on your tuner I would suggest an older unit. $500.00 should get you a heck of a tuner!!

    I have a Sansui TU-217 & love it!! Here's a TU-717:

    Good luck!

I bought an used Sansui T-5 analog tuner which I have been very happy with. Total cost $8.00 Cdn. It replaced a Pioneer electronic tuner that would cut out know and then, internal problem. Although both tuners where able to pull in all the station I preferred the sound of the Sansui anaolg tuner. Apparently Sansui made some tuners that where highly rated but some of them are still pricey.

    my recommendation

    Jack,

unless your willing to go to a magnum dynalab or equivalent, get a cheap $15 tuner form a pawn shop. i have done this and been quite happy. i use the cheeeeep ratshack FM only antenna ($20) with great results.

going to a mag dyn is really the way to go if youre truly into fm. i just went to audiogon and the first thing i see is:

Pete, Happy ears, tr.....Thanks for replying to my post. I've decided to keep my eyes and ears open for a deal on an older analog tuner. I'm really not an FM junky, so no need to spend a fortune. No doubt, I would have spent good $$ on a tuner and not even use it to its full potential. Thanks again for the great advice and I look forward to picking your brains in the future.....Jack

    Tuners

I'll give you a list of my favorite tuners. They all have great performance.

Magnum Dynalab- probably the very best

Accuphase- arguably close to the M-D

    Yamaha T-80, T-85

    Onkyo T-9090

Nakamichi St-7 w/ Schotz noise reduction

    These are all excellent.
