ampex ax-300

anyone know anything about these. found one in garage along with some other old electronics. blew dust off cleaned with contact cleaner and the thing works.are/were these any good thanks for any input getmore1956

is it a receiver? years ago, ampex did make a receiver back in the 1970s that i remember. it was a small unit but it really sounded good.

From the picture I saw searching the net, it appears to be a decent four-channel real-to-real 1/4" deck (2trk+2trk). I know I worked with a lot of 8trk 1" and 4trk 1/2" Ampex gear which was great. As long as the control logic and hub clutches are in good shape it should be a good deck----if you like tape hisssssss. After listening to digital audio for so long I think it would be difficult. But then there's still large number of LP fans around.
