    Soundproofing the basement

I'm going to try to turn a portion of my basement into a "man room". Included in this room will be a laptop, stereo, and small studio/practice room for my band.

The ceiling (which is my biggest concern) is unfinished. It has 2x8 boards placed about a foot apart with the hardwood floor planks of the 1st floor on top of the 2x8. Point to Point wiring goes through most of these 2x8's. Nothing is on the bottom of the 2x8's.

The walls are all concrete block. The floor is cement.

I remember jamming at a friends house years ago and the sound from the basement came up mostly through the register vents.

I have some extra paneling from a recent remodel that I can use.

    My questions are:
What is the cheapest, most efficient way to soundproof?
Does Styrofoam, or even the little peanuts work?
How about Spray foam? I thought of making a jig to use inserts in between the 2x8's
    Carpet?
How should I treat the heating tubes so the noise isn't transmitted through the house?

Any help would be appreciated. Goal is super quiet, and super duper cheap.
    Thanks guys.

I wonder how I should put that on the walls....... I'm open to that idea for the basement system (the when I'm done integrating the new stuff, all the CV crap is going in the basement) but I know the wife won't let me hang it with spray adhesive.... hmmm...

Hate to tell you boys that all those accoustic foam shapes and traps will NOT sound proof a room. They are designed to clean up the accoustic inside the room and will not help sound getting out of the room.

For sound-proofing walls and ceilings there are gererally two recognised methods - Mass and Space.

It can get quite complicated but basically it boils down to creating a wall within a wall or a ceiling within a ceiling so as to de-couple one from the other and try to exhaust the energy before it hits the outer structure. Its all about keeping (particularly bass ) waves from travelling through the outer skin of your room.

An example would be to build a false ceiling under the main ceiling in your basement, say 9inches below; filling up the space between with a product such as Rockwool and then covering the inside of the ceiling frame with double sheets of plaster-board.

It is such a specialised subject that many articles can be found on the web from some good experts.

The egg-box idea of sticking foam shapes around the room is for 'airbourne' sound and not 'structure-bourne sound.

Soundproofing works out not too expensive if you can take it on yourself because all the materials are available in your hardware store ...... no one has yet been able to put a HI-Fi tag on a piece of 2x4 yet
In the music world Impetuosity is not just a youthful trait; I'll explain if you type slowly.
