Yea, American Pale Ale and some cool music! Well, at least the cool music anyway, although I did have some pretty nice Pale Ale over the weekend in a seasonal brew from Firestone Walker. Yumm. But the one over there on the left, that's the runaway best rated American pale ale from the ratebeer site. Near perfect rating. From fucking Indiana??!! Say what? I want some. Do you get that shit in Minnesota, Rae? Have to track some down. What a silly label. Looks kind of like Swish Daddy after a tough night of "quality testing" the latest inventory for his beer distribution biz.

"Oxtail" playing right now from that always lovable Bunny Gets Paid by the Red Red Meat boys, "skyway down on you", that's right. Those lyrics probably flowed from the mind of Tim Rutili with the help of some good ol American Pale Ale way back in the early 90s too. You know, it is time for the Tuesday rotation, so what else has been on tap? Been kind of quiet around here, but besides Bunny Gets Paid, spun a lot of the recent Caribou record, Andorra. Really like that one. Nice and easy.

Always a lot of new sounds floating around. My sig has some of my recent favorites. Shearwater signing to Matador early this year and re-recording 5 of the songs/remastering/reissuing last years Palo Santo on 2 heavy slabs of RTI pressed vinyl was a pretty big deal. Really nice record. Or find a copy of that Richard Buckner debut on either the German Glitterhouse label or original US DejaDisc (not the Ryko remaster, too compressed) and you will be happy. Lots of talk recently around here about that.



NP: Second listen to Polly Jean's White Chalk. Sounds like a very nice recording, I was afraid it would be horribly compressed like the last couple, and like most major label stuff, which always irked me in light of the big dynamics on her first couple records, but maybe because this one is more reflective, with piano as the primary accompaniment, they used better judgment. Screw the idiots at the record label, this one you have to crank pretty high. Into that region of your volume control that doesn't see much action anymore. Really sounds nice on both speakers and Senn 600s. Cool reverb on her voice(s) that keeps you looking up. In any case, Polly will always be special to me, and a new record is always welcome. Dark, reflective, and melancholy, to be sure, but we all have moods. Not sure she's your ticket, though

...and you may find better info. I will try to find some 'o this stuff though. My favorite pale ale is made just 20 minutes from my house. There's a place called the Mount Hope Estate and Winery (don't care for their wine much) that has a huge "Renaissance Fair' that gets thousands of visitors every week, and they started making beer. They don't distribute it, but a local pub got some of their Swashbuckler Pale Ale and it kicks arse! I've had many, many pale ales and IPAs over the last 10 years or so, and this one is the best I've had. By far. Really.

Listening to the Best of Mercury Rev right now. Fun stuff. Mastered by Dave Fridmann so you know it's way way way too loud, but unfortunately, that's their (his) sound now, I guess. Sometimes forget how unique they were, even in their more conventional times.

Oh, you were callin' me one. At least you're accurate if not tactful. I like the beer advocate but didn't bother checking that one (go figure) as I'm just two *****ing busy to fool around websites all day. What am I doing here anyway? Oh, that's right. I got an e-mail telling me you responded, so I just had to peek.

Anyway, I stand by my statement that it doesn't get any better than Swashbuckler Pale Ale. Now if I could just get some for home consumption....

I did not know the Mercury Rev best-of existed. Interesting. Looks like a fairly decent selection... perpelexing are the ommissions of "Nite and Fog" and "Bronx Cheer" but other than that.. looks like a nice listen. My favorite Mercury Rev album is still YERSELF IS STEAM.

Actually, they made a point of calling it The Essential Mercury Rev, so we might all have perplexing inclusions and omissions when they use only 14 songs to cover a 15 year perspective. I got it mainly for the second disc of oddities, but at only $11.95 postpaid for a nice 2-disc package from one of the most interesting bands of the last 15 years, no complaints here. I'd still go with Deserter's Songs, cause I'm a sucker for the more organic side of the Rev.
