    3/4 Gone? (comp inside)

A year-end comp with 3 months still to go? Well, I've bought so much stuff this year that I should easily be able to put together two discs' worth by late December so I may as well do disc 1 now. No time like the present, eh?

This year I decided to do these in Apple Lossless format (with embedded album art) since so many people use iTunes. If you're not one of them there are m4a plugins for most other media player and cd burning software. And of course Windows users can always convert the files with dBpowerAMP. Personally I prefer MediaMonkey3 because it plays/syncs/transcodes/burns Apple Lossless, WMA Lossless, FLAC, and APE natively. I also included some Exact Audio Copy tools that I'll get to in a bit.

If you're not so technically savvy I got some tips for you in an attempt to make this as painless as possible. I'll describe this in iTunes terms but the same steps will work for other media players or cd burning software as well, though some of the terminology may be slightly different.

    1. Before you do anything go into "My Music" or "iTunes Music" and create a new folder called "Slosh 2007 Disc 1". Now when you click on the download links have your computer save files to disc and direct it to download to your newly created folder. Be sure to download the playlist file too.
    2. Once everything is downloaded launch iTunes, click on the File tab at the top left of the page, browse to the "Slosh 2007 Disc 1" folder and import the "Slosh 2007 Disc 1 m3u playlist" file only. No need to add the entire folder and this will keep you from having to replicate the playlist yourself.
    3. Before you burn this to CD-R make sure your burning preferences are set up properly. To do this click on edit and select preferences. Click on the advanced tab. Click on the burning tab. Make sure the disc format is checked for Audio CD. Set gap between songs as "none". Make sure "Use Sound Check" isn't checked.

Okay, now you're ready. To burn the CD simply right-click on the playlist and select Burn Playlist to Disc. Now you've made a bit-perfect copy exactly the same as my CD.

    Easy, no?

    01. Arctic Monkeys - Brianstorm
    02. Future Of The Left - Small Bones Small Bodies
    03. Babyshambles - Delivery
    04. Les Savy Fav - Brace Yourself
    05. Super Furry Animals - Baby Ate My Eightball
    06. Earlimart - Everybody Knows Everybody
    07. Josh Ritter - Open Doors
    08. The Shins - Turn On Me
    09. Pinback - Good To Sea
    10. Spoon - Finer Feelings
    11. Rob Crow - Taste
    12. Arcade Fire - (Antichrist Television Blues)
    13. Ted Leo/Pharmacists - The Unwanted Things
    14. Gruff Rhys - Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru
    15. Modest Mouse - Missed The Boat
    16. Okkervil River - Unless It Kicks
    17. Blitzen Trapper - Wild Mountain Nation
    18. Richmond Fountaine - Moving Back Home
    19. Son Volt - Methamphetamine
    20. Wilco - Hate It Here
    21. The Good, The Bad, & The Queen - Behind The Sun
    22. Andrew Bird - Sycthian Empires
    Slosh 2007 Disc 1 Playlist

This next link is for Exact Audio Copy users only. Since you're probably a bit more advanced I'm just gonna say you have to convert the files to wav, put them in a new folder, then extract the EAC tools zip folder and move the cue file into your wav folder. Open EAC and drag the cue file in. This will give you the proper sequencing, correct gap timing, and place the CD-Text info in the correct fields. I guess you really don't need the m3u but EAC automatically makes one so here it is. The Log is just a text file proving this was an error-free rip.
    EAC tools

Enjoy and keep an eye out for Disc 2 in December!

Hmmm, seems to be a MediaFire problem. I'll try reupping them.

    >edit: RaveRecs won't let me edit my original post so I put those songs here.

Damn, seems like an awful lot of work. Wouldn't it be easier to just burn them to a disc & send them out?

You'd think by now I'd find out what the hell he's talking about. Unfortunately I'm lacking in Welsh friends. FWIW I like this album more than the new Super Furry Animals and I'm a pretty big SFA fan.

Saves me a trip to the post office, otherwise it's exactly the same amount of work as burning a CD comp.

    Hey, Slosh.

I'm realllllllllly enjoying your comp. Third spin through and there's one track that's settled into my skin: Andrew Bird - Sycthian Empires. Is the rest of the album, as good as this track??? If so, I'm rushing out to buy this.

Keep up the great work with the comps. I'm sure I'm speaking for many RRers when I say, "Awesome frikkking sequencing!!!"

    Thanks-a-ton,

    Bill

    Others that are seeping in:

    02. Future Of The Left - Small Bones Small Bodies

    07. Josh Ritter - Open Doors

    09. Pinback - Good To Sea

    11. Rob Crow - Taste

    14. Gruff Rhys - Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru

    16. Okkervil River - Unless It Kicks

    18. Richmond Fountaine - Moving Back Home

Yeah, this album is fantastic. All these months later and it's still my fave of 2007. His best yet and that's saying a lot considering how much I like The Mysterious Production Of Eggs and The Swimming Hour. Lots of discussion about it around here when it was released earlier this year. You must not have been around much back then.

Sycthian Empires I think it the best track from that album, but there's about 4 close contenders...

Lacking Welsh friends myself, I've decided to obsess about the Small bones lyrics. Anyone fill in the problem spots and help me end this obsession?

    Small bones, small bodies
    Side-kick to semantics
    The slightest excuse
    The tiniest exoskeleton

She said the fossil (could've been foxhole)
    Accepts such a standard
    Forgetting the reason
    Small bones, bigger problems

    With this I miss you
    I finally admit that
    I beg forgiveness
    My finest exoskeleton

    I am the fossil
    We are the fossil
    That beg forgiveness
    Small bones, small bodies

    Small bones, small bodies

    Yeah,
    Small bones, small bodies
With all the being extra --- miniaturized
Who put the brakes on courage
    My finest exoskeleton

    She said the foxhole
    it caused so much carnage
    Forgetting the comeback
Small bones recess papers (I have no idea)

    With this I miss you
    I finally admit that
    I beg forgiveness
    My finest exoskeleton

    I am the fossil
    We are the fossil
    That beg forgiveness
    Small bones, small bodies

    Small bones

    Now…

Thanks Slosh, I downloaded it all but am having trouble with the Spoon song, (anyone else?) it finds the file until I press the download here button and then it hangs up. It's OK though, I guess I can just take it from my itunes file and insert it into my Slosh file. Thanks, I'll be listenin and burnin in a few minutes.

I did a custom 10 song download. Hope you aren't offended, but just grabbed the stuff I didn't know already. I do tend to agree somewhat with Finchy, but with a view toward my end. These download things just take too much time and effort since I'm not really the target. Don't use itunes and all that. Don't have a good PC playback system unless I connect my laptop to the USB port on my DAC, and that's not something I'm often inclined to do. So have to convert the files to something useable and burn a CD, cause it's still easiest tojust pop a CD in the player for me. But still cool you take the time and put this together, and include the extras and the instructions. I've got one smoldering under the radar right now, should be a good one. Not too much overlap this year with you, some of your meh is my yea. It'll be definitely (defiantly?) old style though, envelopes and grumpy PO employees for me. And necessarily very limited distribution, but that goes with the music territory

Can you tell how many downloaded yours with the host you're currently using?

Neither do I. MediaMonkey3 is better.

What does that matter if you're gonna burn it to disc anyway?

No you don't. Burn it straight to disc with MM, iTunes, Foobar, WinAmp, etc.

    Cool.

The only difference between making a comp the archaic way and my way is you rip to a lossless format instead of wav and upload it instead of burning x amount of copies and mailing them. If anything it's easier my way FWIW, I did edit slightly for better flow. Some of the songs such as the Modest Mouse track do end abruptly and I didn't touch those, but I tried to transition them with songs that come in just as abruptly. Mostly I just deleted end-of-track silence and snipped off that first drum whack at the start of "Good To Sea" and faded it up (just in case anyone was wondering why not all of the songs are the same length as the CD).

Yeah, about six complete downloads so far and quite a few partials with particular tracks getting double that amount. I'm guessing it'll end up being around twenty five total judging from last year. Maybe a bit more since last year's was FLAC and required many people to download additional software to take advantage.

NP: (will definitely have to grab a track off of this for my 2007 Part 2 YEC)

Yeah, MediaFire can be a bit buggy at times. Too much traffic for the server? I know nodding0ff grabbed it so it's definetly not a corrupt file or anything. I didn't edit that track at all so inserting your copy shouldn't change anything except for the playlist won't work 100% and you'll have to do your own. I did change (number) the file names as a sort of emergency back up to get the proper sequencing but the meta data will show the track number as on the original CD. Duh, what am I saying . . . just follow the tracklist above.

Damn, I left the CD at work. I'm not sure the lyrics are even printed but I can check tomorrow. BTW, I found out gyrru means driving. Now I know two words in that song

I dunno- you must work for the gubmint and are using their Super-Duper Cray computer. I've got a pretty fast cornection here at work and it's taking over an hour and I'm only halfway done.

What a PITA just to get free music.

And, oh, yeah- the Spoon linky isn't working, which is actually ok, cuz they suck.

Maybe you guys kicked a dog last week or something. I just tried it and it worked fine here, and took all of 68 seconds to download. My karma's better than yours

Thanks, I did download the Monkey, but haven't opened it yet to burn the comp. Been listening to Rae's cool LWIII collection with free and non-virtual bonus goodies. My download connection wasn't nearly what you or noddin0ff got, so it is a little more effort, but like I said, I appreciate what you are doing, it's just that I still kind of like the old fashioned way. I realize that it's not really practical anymore with only a couple people making and distributing comps here, just a local quirk in time. Nothing personal, buddy

Oh, I didn't take it that way. I was just using your post to try to get the point across that snagging a comp this way is pretty easy. I'm not sure why some people think this is some kind of daunting chore. It's not. Well, maybe if you're on a slow-ass DSL connection . . .

FWIW, the freebie version of MediaMonkey3 (which is what I use) only burns at 4X speed, but how often you gonna use it to burn anyway? It does let you set up for disc-at-once/no gaps/CD-Text so in that regard it equals EAC, Nero, etc. I believe to upgrade to the full Gold version it's only $20 but the free one does everything I need, and if I need to burn at faster speeds I just import the playlist to Nero.
