Most Perfect Movies.

This is not the definite collection of best movies. It is just a snap shot as there are too many to mention here.

Not in any particular order:

Stagecoach (1939): Definite John Ford master piece.


Godfather Part II (1974): Part I also qualify in this poll, but realistic portray of early twentieth century in the flashbacks segments put it a notch above its predecessor.


Wizard of Oz (1939): Transition from black&white to color sequence was a magical moment.


Winchester 73 (1950): It popularize a generations of westerns.


Ben Hur (1959): A classical roman era saga.


Malcolm X: This might be the best true biography along side Ghandi.


Mister Robert (1959): Best war time comedy with James Cagney.


A Clock Work Orange (1971): A movie like no other.


Road Worrier (1982): Memorable villains and best chases scene ever filmed.


Jurassic Park (1993): Revolution in the CGI effects.

1. CITIZEN KANE - revolutionized just about every aspect of the motion picture with special effects, camera angles, sound, set design, costume, etc etc. Not only that, but the storyline (both in the film and in real life are monumental) and Orson made this film when he was 26 years old!



2. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY - hardly a film that needs much explaination for it's greatness. Revolutionized the special effects and Sci-Fi genre. Incredibly non-narrative filmmaking with some of the most amazing camera shots, special effects, and the soundtrack is as big as the film itself, shot in Superpanavision 70mm, they don't make films like this anymore.



3. THE GODFATHER - a film that is larger than life and has become a cultural icon. Incredible virtuoso filmmaking by Coppola and while THE GODFATHER II is spectacular, this film is just tight and executed with near perfection with the development of the characters and story.



4. SUNSET BOULEVARD - a film where the characters are playing the real life actors in some sense. Incredible use of the voice-over and character development. Incredibly scandalous as well with it's portrayal of Hollywood during a time when things were better left unsaid. Gloria Swanson..timeless.



6. THE SEVEN SAMURAI - epic samurai film that pretty much single-handedly became the blueprint for the modern Western. Incredible camerawork, brilliant composition of shots and scenes, just perfection.



7. THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET (Obchob na korze) - splendid heart-wrenching film that few have seen, but this is a film that stays with you with it's haunting cinematography and unforgettable characters.



8. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA - talk about a film that is larger than life! This is the quintessential epic film with breathtaking cinematography, insane compositions, incredible depth and superb acting. All around a huge adventure and a film that has stood the test of time quite well.



9. METROPOLIS - Fritz Lang's masterwork of Science Fiction that still to this day intrigues and bewilders people with it's amazing creativity and execution of ideas. While it may have been made in 1927, there have been so many imitators since that while few have seen this film, it's hard to not notice it's influence on just about every modern Science Fiction film.



10. SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS - zany, crazy, wacky, witty, and all around one of the funnest, and yet brilliant films ever. The tone of this film does change a bit and actually becomes a social commentary, but the laughs rarely cease and Veronica Lake is just dazzling.



RUNNER UPS: SCHINDLERS LIST, TROUBLE IN PARADISE, BREATHLESS, LE TROU, RASHOMON, THIS IS SPINAL TAP, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, DOUBLE INDEMNITY, APOCOLYPSE NOW, THE WAGES OF FEAR, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1946), VERTIGO, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, CONTEMPT, THE 400 BLOWS, and 8 1/2.

As your list indicate, there are alot of great movies that can be categorized as perfect movies. Citizan Kane probably is most innovative (and as you said) revolutionized just about every aspect of the motion picture. And as some great movies, they will not get recognize as great movie way past after their initial release.

Psycho from Hitchcock probably deserve a place somewhere in this list. Good list nevertheless, although some in your list haven’t seen.

I was trying to keep the list rather unbiased by just US movies. I love Hitchcock and he has made some masterpieces for sure, I just can't decide which ones I love the best, my favorites probably NOTORIOUS.

I'll 2nd Aliens. It's one of my favorites

I've seen some of the listed but still have a long ways to go. If anything, this will give me some nice titles to put in my Netflix queue.
