    Planet Earth

If you have Discovery Channel, you must check this out, particularly if you have HD. What an amazing show! It took five years to shoot this miniseries, but it was well worth it. The imagery is simply breathtaking and many of the angles and shots will have you wondering how the cameraman got it. Wonderfully narrated by Sigourney Weaver, the information is facinating but won't overwhelm. Lemme put it this way; my 5 year old was interested. A great show the whole family will enjoy!

I saw it. It was the bomb. I love hi-def nature shows on my Samsung 32" hi-def LCD.

OK, yeah...you're right. You have to admit the scene of the Great White leaping out of the water with a seal in it's grip was astonishing. Not only for the imagery, but by putting it in super slo-mo you really got a sense of the power of that eating machine as it propelled it's massive body 10 or 20' above the surface. That was pretty damn cool!

    Key Title...

This would be a KEY TITLE to release on the High Definition formats as a complete mini-series once the mini series ends. People eat this type of high quality progamming up like there is no tomorrow and what a perfect show to highlight the HD format!!!! Let's hope!

Great point, Peru. Why they didn't put the DVD set in BluRay or HD-DVD, I'll never know? If ever there was series that should be put on a constant loop at your local BB or CC, this is the one. This is the "killer app" HD has been waiting for.

The Blu-ray and HD-DVD versions come out in a week. I pre-ordered mine on Blu-ray awhile ago. From the few clips I've seen on Discover HD (I've been avoiding the show so I can watch it on Blu-ray) my family should be in for a real treat.

Are they releasing standard DVD copies at the same time?

That sucker has got to be stunning! This could be the first true reference quality set to have on both HD formats, especially if they don't mess up the transfer and do a direct HD-to-HD transfer with zero loss. I wonder if it will be DD5.1 and DTS ???

Since I don't have cable and have heard so much about this series, I my have to check it out on DVD. As PeruvianSkies said, I hope they do as good a job transfering this series to DVD as they did filming and producing.

    Thanks.

I got my Planet Earth Blu-ray in the mail. Haven't had a chance to take a good look but I popped it in for a sec. Pic quality is freakin sweet. Can't figure out the 448k DD soundtrack though

I'll be curious about the motion on that disc. Some of the footage was shot at 1000fps then drop framed down to 30fps and transferred into direct HD...i'll be curious to see what that looks like in 1080p.

What I find interesting is that this series took 5 years to make, which means we're talking about 5+ year old camera technology.

I got it the day it came out on HD-DVD. It is simply amazing on the 50" Pioneer Plasma.

My youngest was home sick that day, so we watched a couple of episodes. She was captivated, and really enjoyed it.

What is really funny, is that it always shows some innocent, happy little creature enjoying itself. Then the music takes an onminous turn. I asked her what she thought would happen. She thought about it for a minute (I paused the action), let out a little giggle, covered her mouth, then said "SOMEBODY'S GONNA GET EATEN!!". Then we watched the dingos hunt down the impalla.

I would strongly recommend this film to anyone. And I think the OP is a bit off, Sigorney Weaver must have done the US version, but the HD Version is narrated by some English guy. Very good voice, and it fits the program quite well.

The technology that they are using is incredibly cutting edge...the camera that they used for the slow motion 1000 frames per second was designed for car crashes and is still an incredibly expensive and rare camera technology.

the one's that i caught were just jaw-droppingly beautiful. every shot, every frame just amazing. the footage was unbelievable, and then the little 10-15mins behind the scenes footage at the end of each episode where they show how they did some of the shots. amazing amazing amazing series.

the seals swimming past the circle of death in superslowmo... the airjaws shot... the elephants underwater... everything... just beautiful.
