tell me, where are you living right now? (like what city?)

you'd probably be better to go to a loca hi-fi store and haggle a bit.

The Canadian distributor for HSU is Rocelco: http://www.hi-fidelity.com/

And the Canadian distributor for SVS is Sonic Boom Audio: http://www.sonicboomaudio.com/

1024 watts!! what do you need to push that? would my Marantz SR5400 do the trick? Only runs at 90w per channel.

I've got a 140w per channel class a amp the when bridged and given a 4 ohm load it put out 560 watts, more than enough.. it has been rumored that the ns18 is used in the wilson audio xs, but I find that hard to believe.

solen also sells plate amps that can put out some low-fi class d power.

Well first off.. what's your budget in Canadian dollars? What are the dimensions of your room? And how wife friendly must the subwoofer be in terms of size?

My first choice would be a SVS 20-39PCi Cylinder Subwoofer for CAD$759.

Next choice would be a HSU VTF-2 MK2 for CAD$700.

its a self powered sub, so you feed it a line in, or speaker level input and its built in amp does the rest!

I use to own the HSU VTF-2 (older one). Great sub! I upgraded to a Paradigm PW-2200 and sold it later on. Then I sold the Paradigm later, too, but anyway. If you're looking at $700 + cdn for a sub, I think you'd be better off with the Dayton Titanic or buying used. Actually, the 12" Titanic would be a great fit in that room size.

Subs are a bit tricky, where shipping is so expensive, but from what I've seen here, it can be hard to find a decent buy when it comes to subs. The Canadian dollar has been offering some pretty good opportunities to snarf up US gear for cheap.

You might try Axiom - Geoffcin here did a review for this site on a system with one of their badass subs. I trust his judgement, he's been around a long time and owns some pretty good gear himself, he's not one to shill. Worth looking at at least.

    Mirage and Paradigm

I would second the vote for Mirage. Their Omni S-10 or S-12 are a great choice and should be in the $500 to $750 range you mentionned. Paradigm's PS series are also heavy hitting subs although the bandpass design sometimes puts people off depending on their music preferences ..... HT performance is never an issue with those.

SVS (ie. 20-39 PCi) and HSU (ie. VTF-2 MK 2) both make amazing subs and have 30 day money back guarantees.

The lower priced Axiom subs, from what I've listened to, are a bit underachieving for the price. The new v2 of the EP-350 ($750)has been getting great reviews and of course the EP-500v2($1300) and 600v2($$$$$$) are reference units but also price themselves out of your range.

Audition what you can and let your ears decide. Good luck.

    Shane

Score! I didn't know SVS have a Canadian Distributor.

Canadians looking for Hsu subs have several options, like:

    http://www.electronicsforless.ca/Product.aspx?CatID=15
    http://216.191.245.162/superteck/

Superteck in particular has very good deals.

Kexodusc had persuaded me to build a DIY sub during a discussion about $600 sub recommendation months ago. At first, I planned to get a Dayton 15" kit he had suggested from Partsexpress. But when I placed the order, the sub has to be shipped by UPS for its size. And this way, I would have to pay shipping+ tax + brokage fee, which would be more than half of the price. While in the States, people get it for free shipping. The difference is too much... Finally I ordered a TC sound 2000 12" driver when it was onsale for $159USD and some tools. I will try to build a enclosure myself (possiblly with some help) when the weather gets warm. I am not handy, but I'd like to learn some carpentry for the project. I may finish it with a ugly box, but I will try to make it rock for its price;-)

Building a box can be pretty easy. Go to your local Home Depot or lumber yard, ask them to cut your MDF to whatever size you want. Put the box together. The only real hard part is routering the driver cutout. For that, I recommend the Jasper Jig, unless you want to make your own from scrap wood. I use to do that to be cheap. The Jasper Jig is totally worth it in time saved though.

Nothing wrong with going with a TC Sound driver. They make some damn fine subs. In fact, building your own can exceed the performance of the Titanic kit and save you money. The catch is the added work/difficulty.

Yes Kexo, I am ready to follow the tips.

But I want to build a ported sub to get lower Hz number for HT use instead of a sealed. My room is 20 x 11. what would be the proper size of the enclosure?

Oh dear....That all depends on the T/S parameters of the woofer in question and your desired performance.
I don't have the T/S paramaters for that woofer on me...I could come up with something if you posted them.

I haven't dug into the information about paramaters of subs, so I don't unstand most of them.

You should be able to find most of the explanations online by googling. Did TC Sounds recommend a box?
