I have a directv hd receiver you can chose 480i 480p 720p 1080i when would you use 480p? Is that for non hd channels?

480i would be the choice for SDTV and your system should use the native settings 480p/720p/1080i/(1080p)(if supported) for your EDTV and HDTV

Actually, it was named after me. Just kidding. Wasn't there a movie called EdTV? Anyway, EDTV was the rather awkward moniker given to fixed-pixel displays with a native resolution of 480p; it stands for enhanced-definition TV, as opposed to SDTV (standard definition), which is interlaced, and HDTV, which is reserved for vertical pixel counts of 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. If you have an HDTV, you should set the incoming signal to whichever setting is closest to its native resolution. With some 720 (or 768) displays, however, a setting of 1080i can work better than 720. You may have to experiment to find out. Also for some EDTVs (480p), an HD setting works best. Again, try it yourself.
