    Define "best".

And: reel-to-reel tapes, probably. Many of them are closer to the master tapes than some records (someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about that, but I was told that because the market for pre-recorded reel-to-reel tapes was so much smaller than records [order of magnitude], that they didn't bother with the printing of records from master disks from The Master like they did with records).

    Best sounding?

Was thinking of a bit more common formats than reel-to-reel.

VHS used as a tape deck is good. Best SQ in a common format would have to be the turntable.
