    diy 12v powersupply

    i am starting to work on building a power supply for an amp i built from a kit. i have ideas on the methods i will use, mainly a large toroidal transformer and 2 diode rectifier circuits (some how put 180 out of phase and then added back together to cancel out noise in the end dc voltage. i would like to get 12 to 13 Vdc. starting with standard 120-125 Vac 60hz. currently planning on starting with this design and modifying it. any input would be great.

    i don't need any more than 2 amps for my current application. but if i can build it so I have a good amount of head room and not spend too much more i will.

    This will work for you. It is simple and straight forward. Use a 2" x 3" heatsink with about 1" fins.

    You can buy the parts at Digikey on-line. I would pick a transformer whose output voltage was about 12VAC, this should give you about 17 VDC no load.

    For supplies of this size (24 watts) a toroid offers little advantage, maybe a standard transforrmer from Signal Tranformer Company makes more sense.

    I'd just use a cheap surplus SMPS power supply off e-bay. I paid $8 for mine, and it looks to be a very nice solution - low noise, high efficiency, and small.
