benefits of preamp setups over a/v recievers?

hi guys, maybe its sounds like a stupid question, but its worth a few low blows. if there is already a discussion somewhere or a link to conserve your energy, no problem. what is the difference between the built in circuitry in a/v recievers and a seperate amp and preamp setup? i thought it was better to keep the signals shorter, no? i could see that a more powerful amp could very well help sound quality, but the preamp? thanks in advance.

By going the separate pre/processor + power amp route, you have the ability to purchace some very expensive, possibly very flexible SOTA preamps and you must then choose which power amp(s) you want.

With a receiver, you basically have a pre/processor bundled with a tuner on one end and a power amp on the other. This affords quite a savings. Receivers can sound quite good and offer quite a value.

Additionally, many receivers have the ability to drive external power amps, just like separate pre/processors.

Now, how much this is worth to you is a decision only you can make.

IMNSHO, the best bang for the buck is to get a decent mid line receiver with power amp outputs and, if needed, get separate power amps for it. This way, you get the best of both worlds.

    Have Speakers?

Go to dealer take home receiver and take home preamp processor. Run speaker wires from both set-ups. Take out 20 of your favorite cds of all kinds and qualities. Listen to your music through both over the weekend.

There has been no longitudinal studies with your ears with all combinations...so go listen.
