    Twin Cinema: The New Pornographers

There's been some talk around these parts about this CD and I thought I'd add my two cents and post my Friday Song of the Day here.

I'm back to treating my music like precious jewels. I'm buying CD's one at a time and learning all I can about the band and memorizing the lyrics and falling in love with music all over again. I'm easily distracted and too much music turned me off of listening for a spell.

I've had Twin Cinema for a while now, but it is just now growing on me after about 5 plays. I can see why Autumn likes this album, even though I wouldn't have expected it. There are some definite 70's style riffs on some of the songs. Kinda Bowie, Who-ish background vocals.

I really didn't like the album at first, except for the songs where Neko Case's vocals were up front and centre. But I'm coming around. I know A.C. Newman has been mentioned her before. I know nothing about him. Is he good as a solo artist?

Right now my fave song is:

    In coral and gray
    In submarine chambers
    One day
    It swam for the light
    The jewels that lit
    The cities that float there
Cities in circles drawn perfect, complete
Holding the secrets on my street
    My street, my street

    So come in and play
    The song of the siren
    It's commonplace
    You hear the voice rise
    In one wave
    And crash on your doorstep
Making the circle here perfect, complete
These are the fables on my street

    Anyone wanna talk music?

Yes, and he was also good as a member of Zumpano.
And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

I like to keep people on their toes.

I like that song too. But if I had to pick a favourite, it would probably be Jackie, Dressed in Cobras

I got to hear the New Pornographers live last week. They sounded really good. I had never heard them before this. So they are worth digging deeper into?

If I remember correctly you're in Southern Ontario aren't you? Were you at their show in Toronto on Feb. 25? I wanted to go to that one but found the ticket price to be a little more than I wanted to pay. I think that there was another, invitation only, show through 102.1 also last week...perhaps you were invited to that.

I would say, yes if you liked them live, then pick up Twin Cinema. You should be able to find it in the $12 - $14 range. I also have their 2000 release Mass Romantic. It's good, but I have to say that I much prefer Twin Cinema. There's another CD in between the two that I haven't heard.

Ya I played the after show show at the Horseshoe that was the 102.1 thing. I only got to hear them from the back, but it was good. I will check them out. Thanks

    New Neko Case tomorrow!

Not that anything is wrong with the old Neko

I do have a copy of Twin Cinema, but haven't really gotten to know it well enough for even one of my usual flippant, yet strangely insightful remarks. But yeah, the new Neko is definitely up there high on my list. Recorded down at Wavelab again in Tuscon, like the great sounding last one, Blacklisted. With the Giant Sand and Calexico guys and some other good people who also record down at Wavelab. Should be a fine album, even if some people are saying it's not quite the greatest thing since Pork Chips. Neko is sweet, and Blacklisted has seemingly grown in stature with each passing year, so much so that it now regularly winds up high on best of the new millenium lists, sometimes even at the top, which is gratifying for those of us who slobbered praise all over it to begin with

She's really poised to have a big breakout year. Just saw she's performing this Thurs. on Jay Leno too, after making the rounds last month with her Porno buddies ....

After appearances on Conan O'Brien and Late Night with David Letterman with the New Pornographers, Neko Case takes centre stage on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday March 9.

Excitement has been brewing for Neko Case's upcoming album, "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood." The LA Times recently highlighted it as one of the most anticipated releases of 2006, declaring " emotional vocals were the best thing about the New Pornographers' "Twin Cinema" CD last year," while an early review in Bust Magazine proclaimed that "Neko Case may well be a person, but on stage and on record she's a force of nature." A forthcoming cover story in Harp magazine calls "Fox Confessor" "mesmerizing" noting... "though many tracks are thickly layered ... the core initial spark remained. Rather than growing cluttered, the songs became more luminous."

Currently in Europe promoting the upcoming release, Neko will kick off a US tour with a showcase at SXSW in Austin TX, at Antone's on Friday, March 17. The tour will find Neko playing her largest venues to date in several markets, including two nights at the 1400-seat Webster Hall in NYC, April 6 and 7.

Additionally, on February 2, Neko earned Female Vocalist of the Year honors at the annual PLUG Independent Music Awards, held at Webster Hall in New York City. The PLUG Awards are organized and voted on annually by a collection of music lovers -- writers, DJs, webmasters, bloggers, artists, filmmakers, managers, indie retailers, and most importantly fans -- who champion independent artists. There's more information on the PLUG awards available at http://www.plugawards.com.
