Can someone suggest a link where I can learn how to improve the acoustics of my listening and home theatre room. It is not a conventional room set-up (staircase at back, open door at side wall, boxed in ducts and furnace) and I can only imagine what all this is doing for my acoustics but I have to make do.

audioholics.com has some good articles on room acoustics and diy solutions where you can learn about diffusion (dispersing sound waves before they reflect) and absorption (preventing reflections) as well as bass traps. You can also visit websites of companies that sell such products such as auralex.com and acousticalsolutions.com and get a feel for what they sell and what it's all used for. The basic idea is to minimize reflections from walls (typically side walls) and floors and to try to eliminate standing low frequency waves from the sub.

Auralex's webpage has a ton of good info, and their products aren't bad...paul_pci named some pretty good sources for now...there's quite a few diy room treatment resources out there too if you ever decide to go that route, but before you make that decision you'd be well advised to start reading.

Here are a couple regarding building DIY bass traps and proper placement. I'm a big believer in the value of these for both node control and diffusion in my listening room. I have two Risch quick and dirty bass traps in the back corners and twelve (six columns of two units each stacked) of the Gale style - (4) 18" and (2) 13" placed in the remaining corners and wall mid points.
