    Best New Artist

    Category 4

    Best New Artist
    (For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)

    * Ciara

    * Fall Out Boy

    * Keane

    * John Legend

    * SugarLand

    Well, I don't think it's any secret around here how much I'm into Fall Out Boy these days, so naturally that would be my pick, no question. But what about you? Which one of these new artists gets you the hottest?

    Who the fark are any of them? John Legend sounds like a cheesy nom de plume for a porn star.

    I think I know who Keane is.

    Heheheh...what is Category 4, Davey? I've never heard of any of them either, except for Keane.

    Heehee, that's funny. You guys and gals are all just such a bunch of oh so indie hipster elitist snobs! Long live the Grammy's! Hail to MTV! Watch in wildly impassioned delight as the Fall Out Boys all twirl on cue. Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside!

    Sisters rejoice in a B-minor chord,
    With wildly impassioned delight
    Rapture is mine now as I behold
    All turning holy and bright
    So bright.

    She gives me all the love
    Why do I not hear my name?
    She gives me all the love
    Maybe I don't understand.

    Say what? What! Say, what did you say your obner name was again? I think I might've missed it? Do you have a cute avatar?

    Yeah, they're pretty popular. Funny though, every year they seem to pick bands that have been around for awhile in the new artist category. These guys have been putting out singles and EPs for a few years now, and their big break record that got all the attention was released last year. But I guess that Best Buy and Walmart and all those stores that shape the Grammy committee's perception of music didn't start pushing it big until earlier this year. And there was a thread just recently about it here too. Guess we're getting to be pretty mainstream around here ... but not me! I'm voting for those goofy indie blues rockers the Deadly Snakes from Toronto! Even though they aren't really new, they're new to me! Long live Canada!

    But who the hell are the Deadly Snakes? or Ciara or Fall Out Boy or John Legend or Sugarland for that matter?

    And didn't I hear something about Gwen Stefani being nominated for best NEW something or other? Gwen? New? I guess dumping your band and going solo makes you new. Kind of like a friend of mine in high school who tried to convince us that three months of celibacy made her a born again virgin. Yeah. Sure.

    Just another group of losers from your backyard. I only just got the album so haven't really had a chance to absorb it all and come up with my own brilliant flow of emotional effluence, but I can tell already that it will soon flow freely, so in my stead I've elected to employ one of the nameless scribes at AMG for your edification ...

    Porcella is the work of a group hitting its peak in terms of songwriting, performance, and production. It is a fine record with a masterful combination of drama, melody, excitement, and emotion. As good as indie rock got in 2005. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p...0:206tk6hxykr0

    Count me in for the Bedouin Soundclash. Canadian & new.

    P.S.,
    Keane's Hopes & Fears is way too wimpy for my taste.

    Sounds interesting. I tracked down a stream of their tune Gore Veil. It's here if anyone is interested. http://www.intheredrecords.com/pages...%20snakes.html

    I didn't like it at first but about a minute into it, it started to grow on me. Besides, you've gotta love a band that uses a toy piano on their disk and has a band member named Age Of Danger (parents can be so cruel). Let me know your thoughts once you've had a chance to absorb this one a little more. It sounds like something that I might like.

    Lemme tell ya...three months of celibacy is a curse, not a blessing. If you're a young guy, it still doesn't make you a virgin, but you may as well be one.

    I really like that John Legend album...he's an r&b guy, kinds going back to that neo soul stuff with hip hop elements. Still, I thought that came out last year.

    I'm really into a band called Gizmachi right now. They played at Ozzfest this year. They're kinda metal, but not really. Artsy. It's hard to describe the sound.....maybe something like what King Crimson would be if Robert Fripp had grown up listening to grindcore.
