Best sub for around $300??

So far I'm looking at the Infinity PS 12, JBL E250, and Velodyne VRP-1200. I dont know about the Velodyne because it only has 130watts RMS and compared to the Infinity and JBL which have over 250watts RMS. Also, what about the Sony SA-WX700, I've been hereing some great things about it but I'm always iffy on buying Sony speakers.

Don't be distracted by the watts. Certain manufacturers have excellent reputations for making subwoofers and others do not. Therefore, the quality of sound you hear is not going to be determined by the wattage, but by the excellence of quality through and through. Given that consideration, from your list, I'd take a 130 watt Velodyne over a 10,000 watt Sony, JBL, or Infinity any day. Another thing you could do is to continue to save your money until you can afford a quality subwoofer that will last and please you for a very long time instead of compromising on a iffy quality sub that you'll get frustrated with very quickly.

I think that this one would give you the best bang for your buck. It's $358 though.

I bought the Velodyne VPR1200 from Overstock.com for $229. It's great for movie, Iit can shake the whole room. I hardly have the volume to half position. As for bass accuracy, I need a test DVD to test it.

Well, I picked up the infinity ps-10 for $219 shipped, good buy???

It will do the job. Don't expect it to blast out huge amounts of bass that will shake your room, in fact, expect the bass that comes from a quality loudspeaker.

If you're pleased with the sound, that's all that matters! You'll find that Infinity isn't known for it's subwoofers, so you'll have a lot of people knock it. However, if you're not too much into home theater and stereos, then you'll probably be happy. I know a lot of people here wouldn't like the performance at all because they're comparing it to a sub a couple hundred dollars more.

I've got the PS-12. It does a fine job for the money.

Keep in mind that this is for my HTPC setup, not my acual home theater(which i have a paradigm reference series setup), I also plan on picking up a Pioneer VSX515K receiver(http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/produ...nel%20receiver) for this setup. good choice?

I would think that a PS-10 would be better than most subs made for a computer.

Okay, heres what I ended up getting, Onkyo TX-LR552 receiver, and a Sony wx-700 sub, and using the satellite speakers from my logitech z5300 system. I gotta tell you, I'm really impressed with the performance of the whole system(after a few equalizer adjustments on my pc) and even more impressed with the sony sub, it hits prettttyyyy darn low and it shakes my dorm room.

As much as I dislike most Sony subs this one is pretty impressive. Specially at the asking price of around 250. There was definitely some thought put into this model. I have heard it several times and it does dig deep and does not sound muddy or boomy when properly calibrated.

Alot of people might give you grief or think Sony sub are crap but this one model is an exception.

I hope you like the Sony. I was in the exact same situation about 6 months ago. I ended up with the JBL E250. I found it online for $199. For my ears and listening, the JBL is amazing. Mostly I have movies or live music shows burned to cd playing. It will rattle the windows if you want it to. Peace.

I have the Velodyne CHT-10 (very similar to VRP1200, the CHT is no longer made). Personally I prefer the 10-inch sound to the 12-inch for music. It has a tighter sound. Anyhow it has more than enough power (I think mine is 150W) for a medium to large sized room. The VRP would be a good choice in this price range.

I auditioned the Sony in question and was thoroughly unimpressed with the sloppy bass it produced. It got down plenty deep, and may be OK for home theater use. For music listening, I would recommend going with someone else. The infinity would be a better choice than the Sony.

Of course, it really comes down to personal choice. Go to Circuit City, listen to the Infinity, Polk, Velodyne, and Sony. Pick the one that sounds best with the material you will be listening to the most.

I had that same Velodyne, that thing was awesome. Unfortunately I had a power surge and it got fried.

I was impatient to replace it and ended up getting a Polk sub with comparable specs, but give me a choice between the two and I'll take that Velodyne every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
