    5.1 System For $500.00?

I am helping my friend pick out a 5.1 system for his 15'x15' room. He wants to spend about $500.00. Any recommendations? He needs a reciever and speakers.

I hope you don't mind buying on the net.

Well, $500 limits you pretty much to the HTIB crowd at your local Big Box stores on the highway but I’ll try to do a little better. These prices are “net only” but neither is a fly-by-night organization and these are brand new in box items.

For starters, this speaker system would be a decent place to start. It’s not the best but, given your budget, it’s about the best value you’ll find unless you know a relative in the business.

That leaves about $200 (web pricing) for an entry level receiver. Circuit City has a plethora of entry level receivers around and under that figure. My stepson has a little Sherwood and it works quite well in his situation but there are other brands to choose from such as Onkyo, Panasonic, Sony, etc…

...you might even have a little left over for some generic cables.

Might want to check E-Bay. There are some really good deals to be had.......there was an Onkyo 5.1 receiver for under $150 last night.

    Does that include the subwoofer?

If it's the ventriloquist, I don't think so. But, I could be wrong. If it does, then that would definitely be a contenda.

Many good choices above already. It's also worth looking into this set. http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-.../KEFKHT1005BLK

Here are a few receivers to check out. http://www.accessories4less.com/cgi-...ory/AVReceiver

Pioneer is making some good receivers at a fair price these days also. Here's just one. There are many others available. http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ures/538095029

    Happy hunting.

    Here's an interesting thought...

If you can talk your buddy into looking at the purchase of a subwoofer above anc beyond his $500 limit, these $300 speaker systems become interesting options as well..

    Two pairs of these...

    ..and one of these...

    http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/pr...sp?sku=ATHASC1

...will provide quite a healthy 5.0 system.

Or, if he's considering a 6.1 system, simply get three pairs of the first one.

Either should be great for music. For additional sonic impact for a HT, just add a decent subwoofer.

I know noone here is a fan of HTIB's, but I bought a kenwood package about 3 years ago for about 350 bucks....700 watts, 5.1 system with a good sub...I threw a 30$ dvd player ontop of it, hooked up the digital audio connection and had a very good home theater system for the price.......sure it wasn't anywhere near an audiophile's dream, but it worked great, sounded great, and worked with my wallet.....look for the clearance items at best buy and circuit city...sometimes there's only 1 or 2 left of an older outgoing model that they want to get rid of.........good luck on the search
