    ITunes 5.0?

I read a warning on another board that they downloaded the new version of ITunes & in the process they lost their library & playlists. The music files weren't knocked off the computer, but they had to rebuild the lists from scratch, which would be a drag. Easy enough to back up those data files, of course, but still...

I've been using ITunes a LOT since I discovered how much better it is for my needs than Musicmatch became after their last unnecessary upgrade. You'd think that a company like Apple, that makes software that works, wouldn't fall into the same trap of putting something out there that seems, well, unnecessary, just for the sake of adding a new feature? Well, I'm glad I only did this on one computer, because I may very well uninstall & move my 4.9 from my other computer. Hard to believe ITunes would become clunky to the point of almost resembling Musicmatch, but it is. And while my system is hardly state of the art, it's just over a year old, P4/2.66/768 mg RAM. I don't think it's the system, especially since 4.9 ran so well on this box. Anyone else have a similar experience?

    I don't like others.

    Behind the times

I'm always a little nervous when I update software that way. For the reasons that your friend experienced. It works now, so why should I take the risk of screwing things up by changing it?

I live by the rule...don't fix it if it ain't broke.

    I'm still running 4.8.

    Had This Problem Once

I had this problem once with an earlier upgrade for iTunes. It was a hassel, but actually it created an opportunity for me to improve my filing system.

I used to create all kinds of playlists because I wasn't adequately using the built in options of genre, artist, album, etc. I have since created finer categories for genres where before I would have created playlists. For example, instead of having a playlist for commercially orieinted prog music, I created a genre called Art Rock. I also have a genre called Progressive for the rest of my progressive stuff. I did the same with Jazz. I created new genres instead of playlists. So now my EMC stuff like Garbarek and Jarrett and Rypdal and others has the genre New Age Classical, and no playlists.

By doing it this way, I actually have very few playlists. So if my playlists get wiped out, at least I don't have a lot of rebuilding to do and in fact could live without them.

I haven't upgraded yet to 5.0, but thanks for the heads up on this issue.

I've upgraded two Apple laptops to 5.0 (a G3 and a G4). Both run 10.3.9. No problems with either. The G3 runs a 55Gig library on an external drive.

Although I didn't check for this upgrade, for macs and mac related updates the best source for info (IMO) is

    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
They'll have extensive lists of bugs and fixes usually within a day.

    Here's two relevant bug feedbacks

    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/...05.html#S19761

    No suggestion of library problems.

Another decent forum for asking around or keyword search is

Don't really like the new look of 5.0 though.

    ITunes 5.1

Well, lo & behold, within a week there's a new ITunes. The problems with the 5.0 must've been enough to get them a'crackin', huh? Ya think Microsoft would've had something so quickly? Don't get me wrong, I can't see switching due to Macs not exactly being friendly with some applications that I use, but I tend to think of Apple as a company that makes things that work. I didn't have the library backup problem that some apparently did, and I was backed up up the wazoo with that, but this one seemed to go pretty smoothly too. That said, it remains kinda clunky, which is a disappointment, though it might be a tad better than 5.0. Haven't spent enough time with it to tell. We'll see.

You are correct, thanks...now it's time to move from Firefox 1.0.6 to 1.0.7...I'm not brave enough for the 1.5 beta just yet.
