Matching amp and speakers - impedance

I want to purchase an Arcam A65 amp and I was wondering if it would match with my psb image 2 b speakers which are rated at 6 ohms nominal 4 ohms minimal and 91db typical listening room and 89db anechoic chamber. I know that the arcam accepts 8-16ohms and it is suggested that it has an efficient speaker of at least 90db to drive well. Will it be ok if I have my 6 ohms speakers hooked up to the amp? I have a link with the measurements of the psbs and if you look at chart 4 you can see that the speaker seems to be higher than 6 ohms most of the time. Can i get a second opinion?

umm it's hard to tell. That speaker dips lower than 6 ohms a lot. It will run pretty hot, I wouldn't be trying to blast your windows out with that. Try to find an amp that can do the lower impediances. The Arcam will work, but it will got hot fast and may burn up earlier if it doesn't have a protection mode.

Arcam website clearly states in its technical specs that the A65 will do 80 watts into 4 ohms @ 1 Khz. Since these amps are very well engineered and well built I would have no reservations about using my 4 ohm PSB Stratus Silvers with this amp. Just be sure its the only pair you connect to the amp.

I owned an Alpha 8 briefly, it had no problem driving some 4 ohm speakers I owned...if 4 ohms is the minimum impedance on your PSB's you shouldn't have any problem...

The amp will drive your speakers, but; If your into heavy bass driven music, and really like to rattle the widows, this amp might not be a great choice with your speakers. That being said, if you like listening normal music at moderate levels this amp just might be the right choice. Arcam is known for making great gear, heck I even know somebody who owns Arcam stuff!

If you like Arcam try and find the Delta 290 which will drive pretty much everything and sounds better (to me anyway) than what replaced it. Though granted what replaced it has way more features and a nice LCD display. The Delta 290 will run about $300.00US on the used market and was their top amp from about 1993-1998 or so. it comes up fairly frequently as it was the biggest selling integrated amplifier in Europe and I suspect pretty darn close to it over here as well (if you don't count the schlock from the big Japanese reciever makers) .

I'd also look at the Rotel RA2 which IMO is underapreciated and in my audition utterly embarrasses the NAD 320 Bee though the build on the NAD might be a bit more beefy. Nothing is perfect but the Rotel at about $500.00US is money well spent IMO. Still I'd go used because the Delta 290 can be had for even less and is bette rthna the NAD -- I had the Delta 290 for about 6 years -- and the only things that may need to be fixed are the connectors (cheap banana jacks stripped easily but then again it's real cheap to fix too).

IF these guys are right then maybe we need to know which A65 is in question


The A series from aecam didn't wow me so I would audition it with the Rotel if you can.
