For $799 I kid you not, you can get a 42" HD Ready TV. I saw one listed in the Sunday paper at one of the chain stores. You can also get a 30" HD ready TV from Samsung at Circuit City for around $750

    TechLore ( www.techlore.com ) has a pretty in-depth guide to picking a TV. Here's the link to it: http://www.techlore.com/article/10497/

    Make a list of features

Decide what you want, I.E. HD tuner, PIP, second tuner....
Then shop. I found the perfect set for me at a furniture/elctronics store.
It was a Zenith 27" with pip 2 tuners, Computer input... for around 600.

If you are looking for over the air HD then Samsung has 26-30" with builtin ATSC tuners for around 600. (I saw them at Target.)
    Good Luck
