Is there a way to figure out times on a disc- by this I mean can you total the times of the songs, say song 1 is 2:32, song 2 is 5:34 & so on, total them up and divide by something to tell you if they will fit on an 80 minute disc?

Maybe I read your question wrong...But wouldn't you just add all the track times up and if the number was less than 80 It'd fit?

Uhhh, Finch, this is a truly baffling question to me. Divide by what and why? I don't know what kinda playback eqpt you have, but if ya stick a disk in any of mine, it will TELL you how long the dang thing is. So will any burning software I've ever seen. What am I missing?

Sure. There are three ways to do this -- in seconds, in minutes, or both.

Minutes method (may require a calculator) -- Divide the seconds by 60. So song one would be 2 + 32/60 minutes == 2.533333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 33 minutes (of course, if you've done this in your calculator, you can just hit M+). Song two would be 5+34/60 == 5.566666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666 67 minutes (M+). (E.G., so far, you have 8.1 minutes used up, as long as that number stays under 80, you're golden! [heh-heh, sorry...CD-R? Golden? Geddit? Like I said, sorry...].)

Seconds method (may require extra fingers and toes) -- multiply 80*60 == 4800 -- that's the length of an 80 minute disc in seconds. So, song one would be 2*60=120+32=152; song two would be 5*60=300+34=334, etc. Then just add up all the seconds, and if it's less than 4800, it will fit.

By Hand method (requires paper) -- add the minutes and the seconds separately. E.G., what you have going so far is 2+5 minutes= 7 minutes; 32+34 seconds = 66 seconds. Every time your seconds add up to 60 seconds or more, "roll over". No, not like a dog. Add one to your minutes for every 60 seconds. 66>60, therefore == 1 minute + 6 seconds, so total == 8 minutes and 6 seconds. I usually use the colon notation to do this:

Good luck with the math Finch, my 10 year old is available for tutoring! His composite score on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills was in the 99'th percentile and he had a perfect section in math. He's cheap but he can't stay up late.

This is an amazing equation that works only in the year 2003. Note, it will NOT work in 2004. Add total time of tracks up, divide by total number of tracks. Multiply THIS number by total number of tracks and divide the result by total time of tracks, THEN, divide this number by 2003 and multiply the result by the current year. This is the really EERIE part, no matter how many minutes OR how many tracks, you will always end up with an answer of 1. REMEMBER, this only works in the year 2003. Strange, yea, one of those math mysteries no one can solve. Like how come when you divide a number by 9, the number to the right of the decimal point always repeats itself to infinity (or so we've bean told)

Don't know if you we're alluding to this:

One "monkey wrench" here can be the extra "2 seconds" certain software adds to each cut when burning. You can edit/change all those "2 seconds" to either "0", "1", ...or "5", but you then have to add them to the total. So if you've got 30 cuts (a total of 79:20 music), add in all those 2 second gaps (60 seconds), and it won't fit (with certain software).
