    Friday's Comp of the Week

Wow, I've been spinning this new one from Jar called Post-Millenium Release, not really knowing quite what the title means, but loving the music. Kind of a trip-hop thing with a little dubby techno, heavy on the female vocals. Hits on some of my favorites by Bjork and Tricky and Massive Attack and Laika and Stereolab and Boards of Canada, but also some very choice new stuff. Starts out with a most excellent song by Halou. Love it. Need more info....is this a good sample of the Wiser CD? Not a big fan of the Roni Size sound, but that's about the only low point for me. Christiansands is the greatest. Love that song. One of the highlights on the underappreciated second album from Tricky (not counting that indie Nearly God CD, which also has some very nice music). I used it on a somewhat similar (and lightly distributed) comp I did a few years ago that is one of my favorites of my own called Above and Beyond. Also used the cover art from that comp as one of my many avatars

Anyway, just wanted to publicly thank Jar for this little gem and give others a chance to mention one (or more) of their favorite comps they've listened to lately. I know we tend to forget about all the time and effort that goes into producing all these wonderful little music packages that are so freely exchanged here and that make this such a unique place, so anyone else wanna give a call out for one of their recent faves?

    thanks

Thanks Davey, actually this one fell together real nice and quick for me. My themes were a) electronica and b) tunes that I'd never put on a cd comp before. Plus a few that I "borrowed." Just the fact that I hadn't slapped "Christiansands" on one of my comps before was inspiration enough to make this sucker. This mix takes me back to 1997, as there are a couple tune-sequences on there that I stole from some a few of my mix tapes from back then.. That Stereolab/Laika pairing is an example.. those two just fit so well together.. Glad you liked it Davey.

Oh yea, and with Halou's WISER, you'd definately like the rest of the album. Highly reccommended (by me). It has this smoky, trippy vibe, very excellent sound (I think it's an HDCD).. much better than most trip-hop you hear.. though I wouldn't exactly call it that.. Dusty has it too I think.

I love 'em. Halou, that is.

Halou's Wiser -- hey! I've been hawking this thing for years (or at least, that's what it felt like)...maybe not so much on this board, but I thought so...I love her voice, it makes my toes curl...in a good way (does that sound familiar?). Which track did you use, Jar? I'm curious...I also have their previous releases, also as the more typical shoegazery band...um...um...Anywhen?...Anytime?...Anymore! Umani has more guitarsy elements, but their songwriting was already quite good. I don't think it's HDCD, but it sounds that good, yes.

I picked "Milkdrunk" for this one (first track on the cd, first track on the comp), but my favorite song from the cd is "Oceanwide" ... I just love the way she sings "I will not give up on you..." mmmmmmmm

    oh what the hell..

    "Oceanwide" by Halou

All of this love, it overwhelms me
And now you want the distance
    Of an ocean between us

    I want you to know
That I will not give up on you

I thought that you could meet me half way
    Figured that you could
I thought that you could love me
    Figured that you'd fall

All of this love, it withers within me
And it's not fair, no, it's not fair
But, you never said it would be

I thought that you would be there
    Figured that you would

"Oceanwide" is my second favourite song on the album, my favourite being the one that goes, "...how does it feel...to know that you are loved...so much...", "I'll Carry You". It's just such a great love song, completely unfettered.
