Any Friday recs to rave about?

Songs that you just can't get enough of right now? Or albums that you've been playing over and over again? I've just been listening to House of GVSB and I've got AnotherDroneInMyHead in my head and it can't get out so I'm gonna have to play it again. Et tu?

This weekend I'm hoping to pick up Raising the Fawn's The North Sea. I've been hearing a couple of different cuts online streaming (3wk.com), and it's outstanding. Dense, guitar driven, with equal parts darkness and light. Stuff I like to crank up.

Spent last night listening to Madlib: Shades of Blue.

It's a mostly instrumental laid back hip hop record with some occasional vocals. It was put out by Blue Note last year and Madlib used the original Blue Note tapes to mix the thing up. Nice laid back grooves. Good for small gatherings.

I just heard Hey by Butthole Surfers and was reakllky interested in how the song, taken from their debut Brown Reason to Live EP, stands out as being so much more melodic and focused than the rest of that record.

Go! from Tones on Tail is playing now...great song.

    Kirsty MacColl - Kite

I've been listening to this lately. This album is strong, head to toe, but right now the song I find playing in my head is "What Do Pretty Girls Do." It's basically a straight ahead pop tune, but the song is very well arranged and highlights Kirsty's great voice. Topping it off are the cynical lyrics about a popular girl who becomes less than popular.

This album has a wide range of styles (from a countryish number to a Latin-style number sung in Spanish), but it's done so well, it works. It also features two good covers of songs I love: The Kinks' "Days" and The Smiths' "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby."

And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

Oh man, now I have that "nah-nah" lyric in my head! I'm gonna have to pull that out on vinyl tonight. Thanks nobody, for reminding me about it.

BTW, how are you guys inserting pics without using the "attached images" feature? I'm such a rookie....

Sounds like a good one. Just thought I would mention to you, since quite a few people seem to be attaching images, that if the image is already online someplace you don't have to go to the trouble of uploading it to the server here and attaching it, all you have to do is click on the [Insert Image] button or just suround the image URL with [img]URL[/img]. Or just use the HTML image tags <img src=URL>. But if the image is from your own computer or you have some other reason for uploading it to this site and attaching it, nevermind

    I surprised myself.

A friend recommended Maroon5 to me. Not my usual cuppa, but she insisted that I would like it. I saw it on sale last week so I picked it up. She was right. I don't know what it is about this disk, but I spun it about four times on my road trip and was totally taken by it.

Maroon5 reminds me a lot of a Canadian band called Wide Mouth Mason. In fact, I had to check AMG to make sure that it wasn't the same singer. They sound so much alike.

That opening song Harder to Breath is just so damn catchy!

Well, that's why I listed 3 ways to do it. Depends on which editor you have selected in your options. I use the standard one with the extra controls.

Mine for Friday is just-received a coupla days ago- Vetiver, S/T. Debut outing from S.F.-based noo-folk outfit. Down a similar road as mebbe Iron & Wine, or even Holopaw, sans any twang at all. Devendra Banhart plays some fine guitar and sings harmonies, but no song-writing from him on this one.

Ahhh, I didn't even know about that. Obviously, I just use the vB or HTML code, so I don't really need it, but it's nice to know it's there. Thanks.

    well duh!

McLusky - The Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire

This may be their best album yet. It's certainly their heaviest. And for a change, a well-recorded and mastered CD! And yes, Albini had his hands all over this one too. I didn't buy vinyl this time around because while their other two LPs have excellent sonics, they also have far too much surface noise (damn you Too Pure )

    NP: "Icarus Smicarus"

    The Broken Vow

I've been listening to Converge for most of the day and I keep playing The Broken Vow from Jane Doe over and over again.

I just can't get enough of Ben Koller's drumming on this track. It's short and heavy, and the fills he plays at the beginning are just mind numbing.

    The Broken Vow
Those nights we had and the trust we lost
The sleep that fled me and the heart I lost
It all reminds me just how callous
and heartless the true cowards are
And I write this for the loveless
And for the risks we take
I'll take my love to the grave
As tired and worn it is
I'll take my love to the grave
    Bitter and Then Some
Death to cowards, traitors, and empty words
To those adorned with the touch of rose petals
And the blessed gift of forgetfulness
For these are your years and days to outshine
    Push on and soar higher
    This is your memory
    Your everything and the inbetween
    Push on and soar higher

    Joni Mitchel's "California"

This morning for some reason I started listening to songs in my iPod, in alphabetical order, that started with "C". (Usually I just play albums, in the old fashioned style, even through this new format.) Some great songs came up pretty quickly that I hadn't heard in a while, and a couple others could stand as my Friday Song of the Day -- but "California" by Joni Mitchell, made me almost explode with joy, and, for the next 24 hours, is my official best song in the whole word ever. (The paradox, which I will leave unresolved, is that it's not even necessarily the best song on the Blue album.) I quote the lyrics below not so you can read the lyrics, which are of course, really cool -- but rather so that someone who is familiar with the song can get it in their mind so they don't have to keep humming "We Built This City" because of Swish's 50 Worst Songs thread:

Sitting in a park in paris, france
Reading the news and it sure looks bad
They won’t give peace a chance
That was just a dream some of us had
Still a lot of lands to see
But I wouldn’t want to stay here
It’s too old and cold and settled in it’s ways here
    Oh, but california
    California I’m coming home
I’m going to see the folks I dig
I’ll even kiss a sunset pig
    California I’m coming home

I met a redneck on a grecian isle
Who did the goat dance very well
He gave me back my smile
But he kept my camera to sell
Oh the rogue, the red red rogue
He cooked good omelettes and stews
And I might have stayed on with him there
But my heart cried out for you, california
    Oh california I’m coming home
Oh make me feel good rock’n roll band
    I’m your biggest fan
    California, I’m coming home

    Chorus:

    Oh it gets so lonely
    When you’re walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
    Just gives you the blues
    Just gives you the blues

So I bought me a ticket
I caught a plane to spain
Went to a party down a red dirt road
There were lots of pretty people there
    Reading rolling stone, reading vogue
They said, how long can you hang around?
I said a week, maybe two,
Just until my skin turns brown
Then I’m going home to california
    California I’m coming home
Oh will you take me as I am
    Strung out on another man
    California I’m coming home

    Chorus:

    Oh it gets so lonely
    When you’re walking
And the streets are full of strangers
All the news of home you read
    More about the war
    And the bloody changes
Oh will you take me as l am?
Will you take me as l am?
    Will you?

Well, it's not new but it's new to me.

The remaster of Nektar's A Tab In The Ocean. I've never heard this before and I think this is some of the best music Nektar has released. The remaster contains the original 1972 German mix and the 1976 US mix that some of you may already be familiar with. The differences between the two mixes are striking. Personally, I like the German mix.

This CD was a real treat to listen to. If you liked Remember The Future you'll surely like this.

Think I'll throw it on again.

    Yeah...

...I've still been listening to a lot of the Devics lately. Slow-core, I would think that people who listen to Low, Cowboy Junkies, Mojave 3, et al would like 'em. They just fill the void that Black Heart Procession left behind (for me, anyway -- just haven't liked any of the more recent offerings as much as the first 3 albums).

Well, it's Saturday now, but what the heck...

I'm sitting here at work and it's gonne be a beautiful 85 degree day out . Anyhow, the bright side is that I can play tunes thru my pc speeks and not worry about getting those "what the hell is that crap" type of comments from the co-workers.
Currently spinning is Shrink by The Notwist , which I borrowed from one of the cooler co-workers. The song Another Planet really caught my interest and will likely receive a 2nd spin after the disc ends.

Too bad I'm not at the same place as my records right now as I have a few copies of Blue and would gladly send you one. Most are in very good condition. It took a few tries before I located a mint copy that had the same sound as my old worn out one that I cherished so much, but the differences are admittedly subtle unless you are a full-fledged audiophile type with a fairly sophisticated table and associated electronics. Went through the same deal with After The Gold Rush. But if you find more than one copy of Blue to choose from, look for the one with Bernie Grundman's initials in the dead wax. Some beautiful sound captured in those grooves.

I'll probably walk across the street at lunchtime to the higher-end used vinyl store and I imagine I'll find it there. Same guy owns it as owns the buck-a-pop, but he keeps the more collectible stuff in it. $3.99 to mega-$$$

The soundtrack to my weekend is mainly being supplied by Manitoba. Still loving Up In Flames. Might be my favorite CD from last year now. Or very close. Just gets better all the time. And now it seems perfect for summer. All season music. Indietronica? Yeah, I guess so. Not the same as The Notwist or Lali Puna or some of the others, but just as endearing. Didn't seem to make much of an impression around the hallowed halls in Rave Recs land, but I know me and chrisnz sure like it
