Westinghouse LCD's?

Doing some research for a friend at work. He's a regular shopper at NewEgg. NewEgg used to just be computer parts and alike but like everyone they've branched off into "other" things. My buddy at work can get a TX-42F430S 42-in LCD for $799 after promotional codes and rebates. This price comes with no taxes and free delivery. Try as I might I can't beat the code out of him so I can slap this puppy in the upstairs bedroom. Couple of questions.

1. Did a search here, not much if nothing on it.
2. Anyone have any opinions on Westy TVs?
3. Anyone know anything about this particular set.

There was conversation here maybe a year ago I guess about Westinghouse HDTV's, but I don't recall much of the details. I think it had to do with the tuners in the sets?

First off, this company has nothing to do with the original westinghouse, which mainly builds Nuclear reactors and defense dept boondoggles these days, they liscensed their name to them.
Havent heard much lately, but they used to be considered a good buy.
You can't beat the price, certainly, my vizio was 898$.
If you could I would look at one first in the store of course.

I've seen some Toshiba Regza's on the 40" range for around $900 lately. They may be a better TV than WH.

Seems like the biggest problems are black level and moire patterns
on deinterlaced 1080i.
This is important, because right now the major sources of HD are 1080i.
morie has always bugged me, and I like a good black level, which, on
my Vizio (despite what sir talky says) is quite good.
THE westinghouse black problem can be fixed by turning down the backlight enough, but that means a darker room, you might want to
reserve decent black level for special movie watching.
On my current set I keep my backlight at 30 to 32, on my "movie"
mode, on standard (for daytime) its 70.
BUT ONE THING THAT MIGHT NOT SEEM IMPORTANT,
but really is, in the lack of a piano black finish.
A set with one of these finishes really looks hot.
Didn't think about it at the time, but man! What a "look"!!

Afraid thats last years model.
Mine is this years.
The exelent color talked about in the article is one of the reasons I enjoy these sets , the black level is ok if you keep the backlight turned
down to 32 or so.
My guess, (and its just that) is that the dcc(dynamic contrast control)
was turned on on the Vizio, when its turned on the backlight control
isn't greyed out, its gone
TOOK ME AWHILE TO FIGURE out which control was making my backlight control disapear.
ANYWAY THIS YEARS MODEL IS SUPERIOUR IN EVERY RESPECT TO THE ONE IN THAT ARTICLE, including its looks,
a nice piano black finish.

2. Easy to set up.
3. Inputs accessible from the sides makes life much easier.
4. Did I say cheap?
5. Manual is well laid out and readable.
6. Decent "entry" level LCD

Cons:
1. Picture notably not as good as higher priced units.
2. 60 mHZ refresh rate seems to hurt.
3. Cheapest remote I've EVER seen.
4. Unacceptable if you've a better unit in the house.

As my bud was "upgrading" from an ancient CRT, he's happier than slop and his kids are ecstatic. Next stop, 5.1 system for him.

While waiting for drugs at Walfart, saw a 1080p RCA (made by phillips I beleive) 42" and 748$.
Cheapest I have seen an 42" 1080p yet.
If lifespan and PQ doesnt bother you and screen size is all a Sanyo 52"
720p plasma is going for around 1200 bucks.
And they had a 52" Sony for 1800 and change, gotta get to the title loan place!

Something for mental impairment? Or something for macular degeneration? (that would explain why you can't tell the difference between an LCD and a plasma)
