I listen to quite a bit of this. I love traditional Flamenco, for example, and there are younger artists that are playing "new wave" adaptations of all kinds of cultural music. I got turned on to some middle eastern stuff by a small group of such musicians called Niyaz (album by the same name). I'm down with this. Very sensual to me. You can hear 30 sec samples on CD Universe. For some reason, playback is superior to what I hear on Amazon. For those of you wanting an intro to Flamenco playing by a newer artist who includes David Darling (Oregon) on cello on some tracks, try Gino D'Auri- Flamenco pasion y duende (World Class). The opening nunber is a good example of what I love about this music- passion and intensity. You ain't gonna get it on your computer speakers I should't think, but listening at loud volume at home, this will nail you to the back of your chair.

I don't have a collection to speak of, but I do have one stunningly good abum of traditional Flamenco: Pepe Romero, Chano Lobato, Maria Magdalena on Philips. Very highly recommended.

Hey jim,
You must have just started coming around here earlier this summer when I went on my World Music pilgrimage. That led to a now infamous summer compilation of music which entered Finche Platte territory in that it was liked by a few and reviled by many. Talk to me, we'll work somethin' out.

As far as flamenco goes I always recommending Carlos Heredia's Gypsy Flamenco as a good disc. Stellar sonics combined with a spirited performance equals good stuff, and yeah, it's from those crazy Chesky Brothers.

Bob- I like that disc, too. Regrettably, I left it in the drawer of a CD player I was auditioning at an audio store and when I want back for it, it was nowhere to be found. Never did replace it. Chesky does high quality work, indeed.

Feanor- I'll be checking that out. I read on Yahoo that flamenco is falling out of favor with the Spanish mainstream. It's minority music. Heaven forbid. Seems there is appreciation for it in Japan, of late. My destination, were I to visit Spain, would decidely be southern Spain so I could soak up some minority music in the local bars of Sevilla, etc. To my heart's content.

All the guys I've know who were into modern Latin and Flamenco guitar fusion sorta stuff were big fans of Strunz & Farah. I've head a bunch of them, but couldn't tell you which albums are the better ones.

...sucked. Oh, just messing with you bobster. Actually, I'm not much for World Music I suppose. I don't put it down as a genre or anything, just not my cup of joe. I have friends who will listen to it, but I tend to doze off when they do.
