Who do you pretend to be when you're "pretending"?

Even though I'm a musician I sometimes daydream of being someone else musical. Another musician or performer. Most often I pretend to be a Classical Conductor, it's a power thang I suppose. I pretend to be Leopold or some other conductor wringing the music of the Gods out of worthless scum. Sometimes I pretend to be Issac Hayes with an orchestra doing his overblown thematics from back in the day. Sometimes I just want to be playing bass behind Hendrix or someone else. Who do you pretend to be?

When I was a teen I used to pretend to be David Byron of Uriah Heep. I would sing and stomp around while playing the Live 1973 album.

After that I never pretended to be anyome.

Except on occasion I pretend to be a porno star.

My singing voice is actually a lot like Elvis Presley's, so when I do Karaoke I get a lot of requests to sing his music. No matter what I sing, people in the audience remark on the "Elvis" sound. I get remarks like "Elvis does Patsy Cline!" when I sing "Sweet Dreams," or "Elvis does The Supremes!" when I sing "Where Did Our Love Go?"

The coolest experience however was in a crazy dream I had one night: I was singing coloratura just like Beverly Sills! I could even trill just like her! I was so depressed when I woke up and went back to my faux-Elvis voice.

While I've often mentioned that I play guitar, I'm hardly a performer. I enjoy it for sure, but I never really put in the time required to be a really good guitarist. I can fool the average Joe, but not other musicians. That being said, I've imagined myself being any number of guitarists I admire. However, the guy I would think of most would be Stephen Malkmus, especially during his Pavement days. Enough said.
