Uh-oh, Tuesday comes to town ...

Here come a riddle, here come a clue
If you were really smart, you'd know what to do when I say
Why am I going out of my head, whenever you're around?
The answer is obvious, love has come to town

Who don't love the Talking Heads? Well, I sure do! Love that first album and the opening track, "Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town". Doesn't really have anything to do with Tuesday and the better-late-than-never July 5 installment of the continuing saga of "How many different ways can I list the same 5 ceedees", but I did spin some Heads last week so that song has been kind of stuck in my head.

Also was putting a little comp together for myself along the same lines as the Twilight comp I made a long time ago, with some of that southern gothic new americana melancholy sound that always seems to rub me the right way. Stuff like the Tindersticks covering that great Pavement song, "Here" ...

    I was dressed for success
    but success it never comes
and I'm the only one who laughs
at your jokes when they are so bad
and your jokes are always bad
but they're not as bad as this

And it always makes me sad, but it always gets stuck in my head for days. And some Black Heart Procession dirge-rock about a light so dim, and a lighthouse in a storm, and a thousand dead souls. And PJ Harvey singing over cello backing, "plants and rags, ease myself into a bodybag". And some new stuff from the National, which I wholeheartedly concur with Jimbo is one of the best of the year. And some Joy Division singing about "Hell's darker chambers". And the very cool closer from the latest Electrelane album, a 10 minute post-rock workout with vocal backing by the Chicago Choir. Kind of like a multi-part operetta. Lots more, like the opening "Shane, she wrote this", one of my favorites from Verlaine and Lloyd and the boys ...

She gives me all the love
Why do I not hear my name?
She gives me all the love
    Maybe I don't understand.

And a cool bit of Psych Furs tangled up with Simple Minds take on U2 called "Arms Around Me" from the new Departure debut that I like a lot but that's not been getting very good reviews except from me...

So put your arms around me
    Let's go out tonight
    If this is not temptation
You going to kill my pride

And some other odds and ends that keep me in a perpetual state of nervousness and depression

I know, I know, one's gotta have real big cojones and/or a strong ego to start a Tunesday thread at the end of the day, after the holiday, risking the humilation of no response, especially [uno] considering the lack of traffic and interest here lately, and especially [dos] since I'm not going to talk about either Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree. Oops, does that count? And didn't someone just have a Saturday Tunes thread that quickly drizzled out? Oh well, here I am dragging out my hippo balls for display ... or is that my ego?

And for those without all the puzzle pieces, this is the [almost] weekly Tuesday tell us all about what you listened to in the last week thread. Or just say hi.

wow man, that sounds pretty wild. I'll have to track that down. I really dig that Tindersticks song on that comp you made a few comps back, the monkey one? Yea, I can't believe I missed them, seeing as how I was like, mr. alternative music back then. I mean there I was big fan of things like Nick Cave and Red House Painters, but somehow missed the Tindersticks, I'm almost embarassed. Missed American Music Club too, though, I must say, they don't do it for me nearly as much as RHP. I think the vocals are a little overbearing at times. Maybe I just need to burn those albums into my brain a little more. Never seem to have the time these days.

What did I have time for..

Hum - DOWNWARD IS HEAVENWARD.. listening on 'phones, really loud, still hearing things, little mini solos and all kinds of sounds that I've never heard before.. it's amazing how they can go from really stripped down and then just kind of erupt into this huge sprawling wall of sound with all kinds of musical tentacles just reaching out every which way.. it really is an incredible album. The first time I heard "If You Are to Bloom" was at Peabody's Down Under in Cleveland.. Shiner opened.. great set by both bands.. but I don't ever remember being so excited about hearing a new song.. and I swear it I thought Hum had a sure fire hit, even bigger than "Stars" but it was not to be..

I'm thinking of your failing green eyes, smiling as they greet the day, but they can't see me. And now I'm picturing us opening wide, and drinking down our days in haze and bliss together til it tumbles aside, but I just sit and wait for a rhythm in a perfect little thin green line, it's true, so soon

Meat Puppet - MIRAGE. I still wonder why they used drum machines in their middle period albums. It's one is kind of weird, as it stylistically goes all over the place. I once made a mix tape, back when I was 16 or 17.. it had Meat Puppets, Husker Du and REM... I just kind of alternated those 3 bands, and I was surprised how it worked and how the three bands really kind of played off each other.. such an odd band those Meat Puppets were.. Even weirder years later when they were on the Howard Stern show..

My friend made this comp, which, after a few listens, has grown on me enormously..

The King (or Queen) of the Eyesores
(depending on which verse you're listening to)
or, "Gen. Apathy & Maj. Boredom Singing 'Whatever and Ever Amen'"

    01. NRBQ: Ain't No Horse
    02. Daniel Johnston: My Life Is Starting Over Again
    03. Jonathan Richman: I was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar
    04. Modest Mouse: Float On
    05. Weezer: Buddy Holly
    06. Pere Ubu: Cloud 149
    07. Liz Phair: Flower
    08. The Fall: Cruiser's Creek
    09. Screamin' Jay Hawkins: I Put A Spell On You
    10. Eels: Flyswatter
    11. Ed Harcourt: Undertaker Strut
    12. Thinking Fellers Union Local 282: Undertaker
    13. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: Murder Ballad
    14. Eels: Novocaine for the Soul
    15. Skott Freedman: Fairy Tales
    16. Ben Folds Five: Battle of Who Could Care Less
    17. The Shins: New Slang
    18. Yo La Tengo: Can't Forget

I was quite impressed with his selections of Ed Harcourt and Yo La Tengo.

can't really think of much else..

Klaus Schulze, X -- classic ambient synthwork, "Ludwig II von Bayern" remains a favourite by him
Brahm, A Thousand Curves -- a little too hip-hoppy for me
Ghost, Lamarabirabi -- I've tried a couple other albums, and nothing matches Hypnotic Underworld
Minefield, War Machine -- doesn't sound anything like a war machine or a minefield, but sort of trip-hop w/femme vox -- wonderful cover of Teclo, takes it to No Quarter land. LOTW
Lots of Zoar (yes, more of Zoar) and Calexico

All right, I'm good for a late evening pity click.

    Let's see....

I won't regurgitate the list that I posted last week since much of this week was the same since I haven't changed the CDs in my car. I'll just list a few of the standouts for me.

The Trews - House of Ill Fame - this is good for a remention since they played a free show here on Friday as part of the Canada Day festivities. They were freakin' awesome! It was an outdoor gig in the middle of a hot, sunny afternoon with not a cloud in the sky. They rocked non-stop for an hour. I saw these guys about 1.5 years ago, just after their CD came out and they were good then. But they've polished up the act a bit since then and added some nice little twists and turns in their songs to enhance the 'live' experience. These guys are great live! They're working on a new CD which, I think, will either make them or break them. If it doesn't make them, it'll be too bad. They're a talented bunch of lads.

Carol King - Tapestry - another listen to prepare for a live show. We saw Ms. King perform on Sunday night at a casino about and hour from here (unless you're trying to drive home with the cottagers like we were, then it's two hours ) I don't know if it was a temporary affliction or a permanent one but her voice was rather raspy and she was missing a few notes. But regardless, it was fantastic just to be in the same room as her. She said at the beginning of the show that it was a celebration of songwriting...and it was. She ran through many of the songs that she wrote, partly by way of a medley of stuff written for other people, as well as her own hits. A wonderful show that I'm glad I didn't miss.

The only new thing this week...well, new to me...Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American. This disk has been on my wish list for a couple of years now and I finally picked it up. A fun, poppy disk. HMV had this in the Punk section. ????? Not my idea of Punk. I haven't heard any other disks by them though, so maybe the others are Punk? Somehow I doubt it.

Last one...Isilder's Bane - Mind, Vol 1. Care of DarrenH. Thanks Darren! After one spin, WOW! I like this A LOT. Deserves a lot more listening time which I'm hoping to find later this week.

They're Emo, which is sort of an offshoot of Punk. They're to Emo what Judas Priest is to Metal.. they didn't invent Emo but they pretty much defined it in the late 90's, especially in that there are a hundred or so bands that sound just like them. Anyway, they probably didn't know where else to put it. If you like them, you might like The Get Up Kids and Saves the Day.

    I'm up late - so I'll play

Lemme see now, not much really. There was There's Nothing Wrong with Love from ole fave Built to Spill, not my favorite album of theirs, but certainly a quality listen. When's that long-rumoured new BTS album finally going to make an appearance in stores (and on my turnatable), already? Also gave Doves Last Broadcast a spin as well as that indie classic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot from Wilco, still kinda pissed I missed their recent show in Montreal, heard it was excellent. Renewed acquaintances with The New Year and their most excellent album Newness Ends. Papa M's haunting Whatever Mortal and Iron & Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days, fed my indie-singer-songwriter craving. I pulled out Violent Femmes fine album Why Do Birds Sing? as a result of a post by Stone over at another board. Calexico's Feast of Wire made for a nice late-night listen as I recall. And the last one I can remember was Death Cab for Cutie's Photo Album, my personal favorite of theirs. All these get added to my usual summer of '05 listens of new one's from Spoon, Bloc Party, Okkervil River and Beck.

    Hi.

Oh, it won't let me post just that.

I got your Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree posts right here, you twitchy egomaniac.

FA, that Isildurs Bane . . . when it's good, it's REALLY good, innit? I like the more upbeat and dense sections. That Keneally album that my donation to the last crsv disc came from is very similar in tone. A strange kind of orchestral rock and/or jazz. Isildurs Bane absolutely defies placement into a genre. I like that.

I didn't listen to much this past week with the holiday weekend and all, but I did play:

Esquivel- Music from a Shiny Planet. The very definition of "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music". This stuff is more from the late 60s/early 70s. Lots of semi-cop show music. Great listening for weirdos.

Barry Adamson- The Negro Inside Me. dub-noir. Mysterious and cinematic.

Helmet of Gnats- 1st album. White-boy instrumental fusion from the Dixie Dregs / Brand X / Happy the Man school. Like those bands? Guaranteed you'll dig this.

Ben Folds- Songs for Silverman. Slow and trite. This is no "Rocking the Suburbs".

Porcupine Tree- XM. Sorry Davey, DEAL. It was recorded live in studio for broadcast. For completists only.

Collage- Moonshine. An absolute snore neo-prog disc. Monotonous.

IZZ- I Move. An absolute delight neo-prog disc. Colorful, playfull, funny, varied.

Making a ton of my own music too.

    Regressing.

Playing some oldies, here. I made a Thin Lizzy disc for a guy, and Chinatown got stuck on repeat. I also picked up Montrose' (Montrose's?) Warner Bros. Presents Montrose. Lucky Man kills me.

That led to a comp w/ more oldies: Tubes (She's A Beauty), Robin Trower (Little Bit Of Sympathy), Talking Heads, Wonder Stuff, Divinyls, Bruce Cockburn, Ducks Deluxe, Echo & The Bunnymen, Split Enz, The Cult, All, Sherbs, XTC (the CD track listing for Drums & Wires shows 12 cuts when there are actually 14. The cut I chose is called Limelight) and soonandsoforth, ad regresseum.

    Wheeee!

Yeah, great band. Guess we all have a few like that, the ones that hardly anyone else seems to know about even though we think they are so good. I've put them on at least 5 comps now, including the closer on the Twilight comp that is kind of the inspiration for this new one. Also on a little Down The Road comp and my 1995 Retro and the Monkey Bones you mentioned. Guess that's probably enough, eh? Their version of "Here" really knocks me out. Recorded in 1995 I think. And their recordings are really nice too, a little ways beyond that 4-track in Gary Young's Stockton house where Malkmus and Kannberg cooked up Slanted & Enchanted

That's a pretty nice looking comp your friend cooked up. Don't think I've heard of Skott Freedman. Is that a new one for you too, or just something big I missed?

PFM - Storia Di Un Minuto
    Biglietto Per L'Inferno - s/t
Kerrs Pink - Art Of Complex Simplicity
    David Gilmour - s/t
    David Gilmour - About Face
    Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
The Mooney Suzuki - Alive and Amplified
    Rush - Caress Of Steel

One time when I saw Grandaddy live, they covered that song as the first song in their encore. It was way cool.

I love that first Talking Heads album. "Uh Oh, Loves Comes to Town" is such a great opener.

No new radical listening to report; I've been listening to all the Belle & Sebastion EP material over and over again, plus some of my usual stuff.

I'd heard it wasn't gonna show until next year. Don't know why so long though. At least they apparently kept their home at the WB which is kind of surprising, although I guess they do sell pretty good for an indie band. And now that Modest Mouse has broken into the big time, could BTS be far behind? They've always been kind of like indie brothers. Hehehe, maybe Doug is working up his own "Float On"

Your welcome, and I'm really warming up to that BSP album too. Got "Like a Honeycomb" on the little comp I'm whipping up, although it honestly doesn't fit too well where it's at right now. Might still be able to squeeze it in someplace else. A little too Brit-pop sounding when nestled in amongst the Woven Hand and Willard Grant Conspiracy and Wayne Robbins and Songs:Ohia and some of the others.

    Bittersweet Symphony

    WOW.
Do yourself a favor (if you have good computer speakers.... which is a must have in my opinion - mine are ok but I wish I had better ones)... go to www.aol.com and listen/watch to Coldplay doing "Bittersweet Symphony" with Richard Ashcroft. I just got chills.

remember the Tom Tom Club? I heard a new pop/dance song (I have to know this stuff unfortunately for some of the DJ gigs).... but this one I like because it reminds me of the Tom Tom Club.

    Annie - "Chewing Gum"

I'm also checking out the new Sufjan Stevens. I may have to break down and buy this whole album, "Illinoise". I just heard that the album cover (a pic of superman) is in trouble. Apparently Sufjan didn't get clearance to use Superman's pic and the Superman peeps are not too happy. I've been spending so much money lately though!! Yikes. itunes is addictive.

Another song that won't leave my head:
RL Burnside w/Lyrics Born - "Someday Baby"

Listening to a lot of Interpol today too.
