What was or what would be your perfect "Wedding/First Dance Song?"
I never had a wedding reception, so I never had a chance to do my "first dance", you know usually the slow dance that everyong oohs and aah's over whle you dance and smooch your new bride or hubby. If you've never or ever had such an opportunity what song did you or would you choose?

Mine would be this minor classic by Chicago's own, the mighty, mighty Dells, it's called "Always Together".

    What's yours?

We had a low-key reception with a pianist instead of a band. When the time came for the bride/groom "spotlight" dance, I asked him what song he knew and liked best that would be appropriate for the occasion. He went with Elton John's "Your Song," which went over well with the bride.

That was more than 21 years ago, and I was drunk at the time... so my recollection may be a tad off. But I remember I gave her a big, sloppy kiss at the end of the song, earning thunderous applause from everyone (except her mom, who's a wet blanket).

We had two songs also. One as our first dance and one to end the reception. Our first dance was Hubby's choice and he picked Meet Me Halfway by Kenny Loggins. The last dance was my choice and was Longer by Dan Fogelberg.

Willie Nelson - Hands On the Wheel...it was incredibly long-seeming as all eyes were on us.

Billy Holiday - You go to my head.

    You go to my head
You linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round
    In my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
    You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two
    The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought
To my plea, casts a spell over me
    Still I say to myself
    Get ahold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be
You go to my head with a smile
    That makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
    Hasn't a ghost of a chance
    In this crazy romance
You go to my head, you go to my head
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
    Hasn't a ghost of a chance
    In this crazy romance
You go to my head, you go to my head

Romantic, classic, and sweet. 15 years and counting...

A short time later, the DJ (who we didn't know could sing, desired to sing, was about to sing) got out on the floor and sang a full on, Broadway-esque version of 'My Way'. We were floored. Not something we wanted but it's provided us with years of laughs.

Another song my parents really enjoyed dancing to was our selection of David Byrn's 'My Love is You'. Probably a more realistic wedding song.

    Some men desire a princess
And others lust for a temptress
Well I don't need one of those
    'cause, my love is you
    My love is you

    Some men replace their mamas
And some want a young baiana
I have no use for those
    'cause, my love is you
    My love is you

    Sometimes dear
You tell me I'm an *******
    Sometimes you're an ******* too
Even though we're filled with imperfections
I don't think any less of you

    I'm primitive and selfish
    I'm childlike and I'm helpless
Well I got that way because of
    My love for you

    My love is you
    My love is you

We tried playing Van Morrison's Tir Na Nog, but I guess it was a a little too obscure for the palette of the masses.

We were standing in the kingdom
    And by the mansion gate
We stood enraptured by the silence
As the birds sang their heavenly song
    In Tir Na Nog

We stopped in the church of Ireland
    And prayed to our father
    And climbed up the mountainside
    With fire in our hearts
And we walked all the way to Tir Na Nog

I said with my eyes that
    I recognized your chin
It was my long lost friend
To help me from another lifetime
We took each others hands and cried
Like a river when we said hello
And we walked to Tir Na Nog

    We made a big connection
    On a golden autumn day
We were standing in the garden wet with rain
And our souls were young again
    In Tir Na Nog

And outside the storm was raging
    Outside Jerusalem
We drove in our chariots of fire
Following the big sun in the west
Going up, going up, to Tir Na Nog

    You came into my life
And you filled me and you filled me
    Oh so joyous
By the clear cool crystal streams
Where the roads were quiet and still
And we walked all the way
    To Tir Na Nog

How can we not be attached
    After all we're only human
The only way then is to never come back
Except I wouldn't want that would you
    If we weren't together again
    In Tir Na Nog

    We've been together before
    In a different incarnation
And we loved each other then as well
And we sat down in contemplation
Many many many times you kissed mine eyes
    In Tir Na Nog

'Should I Stay or Should I Go?' by the Clash.
Just kidding. It was 'Whiter Shade of Pale' from Procal Harum, as if you didn't know the name of the band.

The aforementioned Clash tune was played for a nephew and his new bride as the 'entrance' song at the reception hall, and that was pretty funny.

    I hear empire down

I hear the roar of a big machine

    Love lost, fire at will
Dum-dum bullets and shoot to kill, I hear
    Dive, bombers, and
    Empire down
    Empire down

I hear the sons of the city and dispossessed
    Get down, get undressed
Get pretty but you and me,
We got the kingdom, we got the key
We got the empire, now as then,
We don't doubt, we don't take direction,
Lucretia, my reflection, dance the ghost with me

    We look hard
    We look through
We look hard to see for real
Such things I hear, they don't make sense
    I don't see much evidence
    I don't feel. I don't feel. I don't feel

A long train held up by page on page
A hard reign held up by rage
    Once a railroad
    Now it's done...

Studies a decade or so ago found that children of broken or single parent households were more advanced at verbal communication than children in traditional two-parent households. But children from two-parent families were much better at sarcastic reparte. (ok I added that last part)

I wanted a modern classic that they would still be playing in 20 years as muzak so that sometime, somewhere, in a shopping mall or elevator or doctor's office, I would still hear that song.

Our first song was Gordon Lightfoot's classic Beautiful:

At times I just don't know
How you could be anything but beautiful
I think that I was made for you
And you were made for me

And I know that I won't ever change
We've been friends through rain or shine
For such a long, long time

    Laughing eyes and smiling face
It seems so lucky just to have the right
Of telling you with all my might
    You're beautiful tonight

And I know that you won't ever stray
Cause you've been that way from day to day
For such a long, long time

And when you hold me tight
How could life be anything but beautiful
I think that I was made for you
And you were made for me

And I know that I won't ever change
We've been friends through rain or shine
For such a long, long time

Well, I must say it means so much to me
To be the one who's telling you
I'm telling you, that you're beautiful.

Same here, non-traditional wedding for the most part. I would choose as the 1st dance Firehouse, Finally Found A Love Of A Lifetime. My wife would probably want Savage Garden, I Loved You Before I Met You. Departing would probably be something distasteful like Van Halen, Black & Blue. An alternate first song might be Garth Brookes, If Tomorrow Never Comes.

At our wedding our first dance was to the Beatles "Here, There and Everywhere" not easy to dance to but the lyrics are right. I wanted to boogie down the aisle after the wedding ceremony to Genesis' "Follow You-Follow Me" but we could not manage that. As it was the church had an amazing pipe organ (you actually were hit by the sound when you stood up front) and the organist played us out with some Bach as I recall.
