I woke up with a *****in' headache this morning so the spinnage has had to be low key today. Elbow has been working very nicely for me today.
I started with Seldom Seen Kid, moved on to Leaders of the Free World, and I'm now spinning Asleep in the Back.
How do I add images from the internets? I can't seem to get it to work.

My local record shop has a few really nice albums of Billy Preston's. I figure I should pick em up. I paid 6 bucks and the vinyl is mint. Really fun album but too short!! I want more...

Ah, got to spend the afternoon with the table turning and the amps at high velosity. Kicked it off with the Monkeys Greatest Hits while my tubes warmed up. Then the entire Rush, Hemispheres LP and another side of Caress Of Steel, then a couple tracks from Styx II and Pieces Of Eight, then the entire Billy Cobham LP, Spectrum, featuring Jan Hammer and the late Tommy Bolin. Man is this a smoking album for those who appreciate good Fusion. http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/r...f=pd_krex_dp_a

War
I was going to post the cover art of the Jennifer Warnes album I was listening to, but I figured poppachubby's brain might explode upon mareveling at its creativity. Instead, I'm spinning this CD (I know...crazy, huh...digital) in his honor...

oH I see it now, sweet choice noob. Although I have to suggest you switch to vinyl for all War albums. Also, don't go too deep into their career, you will be dissappointed. That is one of their best...try Why Can't We Be Friends next...there was something different about War, maybe the racial makeup of the band, who knows, lots of flavours.
-
Since the tone of things has drifted towards late '70's prog (see 2112 thread), thought I'd give this a spin...

Memories, anyone?

I've been spinning The Beatles White Album this morning.
Like Troy never hearing 2112, I've never heard The White Album in it's entirety. But unlike Troy, I've never really consered myself a Beatles fan up until a couple of years ago.
This is an album that I've meant to pick up for several years and just never wanted to fork out the money for. It's pretty expensive relative to the other Beatles albums. But the new remaster along with an HMV gift certificate was enough to finally make the purchase.
Anyway, it's quite good. There's nothing here that I haven't heard before, and I skip Revolution 9 (stupidest thing ever recorded IMO). But that's what's spinning. :)
-
You must consider where the Beatles were at in that period to truly appreciate it FA. Most importantly, the White Album represents their move back to a more traditional sound as a band, rather than the psychadelic sounds of Pepper or Mystery Tour. Great album, Dear Prudence and Happiness is...couple of my faves.
-
-
Perhaps the White album is a bit more expensive because it was an original double LP, not sure if it took two discs. A friend of mine in high school had the LP with white vinyl, I bet that would be worth a fortune today.
War was allowed creativity that seems to scare corporate pin heads today. Listen to some 10cc. If you've never gotten past the hits you missed the band, 10cc albums in the entirety is necessary.
I've got that Billy Thorp. The only songs I really like are Children of The Sun and Eden's Gate. I also have another offering of his, not sure of the title but it has a cool song called In My Room which sounds nothing like Children of the Sun. But I can relate to In My Room.
-
I included the Thorpe mostly as a reminiscence of an earlier age, thinking I would append it to the Rush Thread, but placed it here where it would stand on its own merit. Thorpe was a lot of fun when I was 16 or so, but pretty tired 30 plus years later. Still, Thorpe was quite talented, and while his albums didn't reach the heights enjoyed by Rush and others, he did all right nevertheless. The enhanced stereo version of Children of the Sun on Youtube.com is a very nice bit of headphone fodder, and it was good just to sit back and play "Teenager" for a few minutes...
-
-
Thorp is definitely great for headphones. I didn't mean to belittle posting his album, it's good to know others are aware of some of these albums, I said I have two of his myself. I have a lot of one hit wonder kind of albums and some "hit" is used loosely. StL used to have a great Rock station up to about 1980 when they were bought out by corporate pigs. The station played stuff that was good but may not have been heard any where else. Here's a few titles of mine, some famous, some not.
Arthur Brown
707
Touch
Brahm Tchaicowski
Ram Jam
Gypsy
Tycoon
Lareux
Joe Vitali
Sugarloaf
Lake
Aldo Nova, I bought this new on vinyl back in the day

Ram Jam Peabody? Black Betty was stolen from the blues, not unlike most 70's rock songs. Aside from that, I think their albums were kind of lacking.
-
I prefaced that list by saying they were one hit wonders, I didn't say they were my heavily rotated cherished favorites. I'm a collector.
You can't point your finger at any one band and accuse them of borrowing from the Blues, if it wasn't for borrowing from the Blues we wouldn't have Rock-n-Roll at all. He who is innocent let him cast the first stone.

ummmmm right. And with thine pebble may thou throweth into doth sea I protest. Actually Black Betty is a full out borrowed song, as in a cover. When I say borrowed I mean stolen. Being influenced by the blues is something entirely different, and yes, essential to rock's foundation.
Kind of a pointless history lesson, I was surprised to see Ram Jam in a list from you, based on what I have seen of your tastes. But I didn't know you were a collector which pretty much sums up why it's there. Learn something everyday...
-
I like Black Betty. Even though I collect, an album has to have something worth listening to. The album as a whole isn't too bad. What do you mean they stole BB, they covered it or they were sued or they studio jacked somebody?

It was a Lead Belly song man, my first post said "most 70's bands". They were all jackin songs at a crazy rate. Anyhow...

God this album is awful. I can see why the other guys in the band were like "No really Alan, it's ok, it's your project, let's put your name on it."

I like Hot Tuna. I only have one LP. Not familiar enough with them to know what titles were stand out and what to look for. I have about 3 Rory Gallagher.

I only have one Rory Gallagher, Tattoo, and I really enjoy Tattooed Lady.
Hot Tuna was a spin off of the ealy Jefferson Airplane, the first album was acoustic, First pull up then pull down was an electric lp (pictured lp), Papa John really lets go with the fiddle in this album.

A good way to check out music is to go to Amazona and listen to the samples.
Here is a link to the Hot Tuna First Pull up the Pull down LP.
My favorites are Johns Other, Papa John and Jorma really get with it, Candy man also, Keep your lamps trimmed and burning is a good jamin song from that time. the entire album really cooks.
Give the samples a listen, you will need to scroll down to them.

David Johansen & the Harry Smiths
First of two albums released by Johansen with the Harry Smiths. Acoustic, folk, country blues stuff on acoustic instruments. Great playing throughout by an excellent backing band and great song selection. Johansen's voice has a nice deep, word-weary quality rubbed with just enough sandpaper. Excellent recording quality as well for anyone who cares.

Hey, that sounds right up my alley. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

Johansen is 10 times the chameleon that Bowie ever was.

That sounds frightening. Do you mean that in the sense of persona or musically. Because if you mean musically then I'm going to need more guidance on which CDs to test the waters with.
-
If you like that disc, they released another the next year called Shaker that is pretty much more of the same.

Both really, but heavier on the musical implication. New York Dolls --- Buster Poindexter (Hot, Hot, Hot anyone?) --- w/ the Harry Smiths, quite a range of styles. Around new York City he's done alot of small shows to satisfy his jazz/blues side. As far as "persona"...
