Afternoon all,
OK, so a full two weeks after its posting, I finally get around to checking out Wooch's tribalfunkyfusionacidjazz livestream. Great stuff. I found myself with a hyper-extended chord and a set of headphones cleaning my kitchen at four in the morning. I swear. My kitchen thanks you Wooch.
I spent the rest of the night researching some of the less mainstream 'indie' releases you guys talk about with such frequency. I would have to say I found quite a bit about which to be positive (Calexico,Neko Case) and some stuff I probably won't be checking out... Anyway, it was a fun experience with the exception of the sleep deprivation.
Dave918, are you any closer to "cracking the nut" on your jazz journey; I can't imagine you haven't found a great deal to favor...
Bernd, what is...up,sir?
Cheers to all and good listening

Hi Mark,
All is good. Thanks. My busy time is starting now......at last.:cornut:
But today is a lazy Sunday and we are kicking off with:
"James Grant - Holy Love".
A beautiful recorded layed back album full of great tunes.:6: He used to be the Lead singer with a little known band "Love and Money".
Have a good Sunday.
Peace
Bernd:16:
www.tapecircle.co.uk/jamesgrant/
Released on Sanctuary Records on the 18 October 2004
HOLY LOVE is the fourth solo album from one of the finest singer songwriters in Scotland. It's a more stripped back, gospel/country tinged affair, but with Grants own inimitable lyrical style, passionate voice and superb guitar playing.
"I suppose I'm no different to most songwriters, in that, at some point you want to make a record thats raw, intimate, acoustic, its just taken me a couple of decades to pluck up the courage and have the confidence to sing the songs as they are, not to overburden or embroider them ... "
Co produced by Donald Shaw, the album features Dobro meister Jerry Douglas and the beautiful voices of Karen Matheson and Monica Queen.
"I never thought I'd see myself sitting in the studio surrounded by banjo and mandolin, harmonium. At least I've managed to avoid the bagpipes, I suppose. When I was sixteen I loved Led Zeppelin 3 and Exile On Main Street, Astral Weeks, Blue by Joni MItchell, still some of my favourite records, but at that time the zeitgeist was so different, I drove away from my roots ... "
Many of the songs on Holy Love have a powerful prayer-like quality; the epic title track a hymn to the glory of love, Monica, a playful warning to suitors, The Streets You Walk Everyday, full of hope, Before She Shot The Arrow, the antithesis.
"Catholic guilt is responsible for some of the greatest art there is, a clear comparison exists, for me at any rate, between singing and praying of somehow exposing or evoking the part of you that's God. I think when you stand around singing , 'Teach O Teach Us How To Die', at Primary school its bound to warp you to some extent ..."
The release of Holy Love will confirm James Grants unquestionable talents and continues a vocation that has spanned two decades to make great music. Its time to listen.
"..and he will be seated at the right hand of the father , etc. "
The press on James Grant:
MOJO - "its honeyed melancholy is irresistible.... music from another place"
The Mirror - "a true craftsman with a panache few can match... a classy, confident and heartfelt return."
The Scotsman - ".... like it was touched by the hand of Scott Walker."
Evening Times - "...a triumph in breaking the limitations of stereotype."
Sunday Mail - "Grant is a rare and under-valued talent with a voice of genuine depth."

Good day to everyone
bill-- You know,it is after a dozen years as a 'failed' guitarist who only mastered the technical elements of the instrument that I have recently embraced the concept of saying more with less. Knopfler does this, as do the traditional blues players I've been listening to lately. I think CS is the modern extension of all this. Santana is clearly a river I'll have to fjord soon. Hope your enjoying the spinning.
Bernd-- Sounds like heady stuff and well inkeeping with the oblique spirituality of some of your other musical tastes. I'm glad to hear your keeping busy--save a little extra so you can make it over the pond for that housewarming for G; we'll all tilt a few...
...Now spinning: Peter Gabriel~Shaking The TreeSACD
Cheers all and enjoy the weekend

Good Morning Mark,
Thanks for the kind words and I make sure I'll keep something in reserve for G's house warming. Hope all goes well with his new home. Must be very stressfull.
Listening to another old favourite of mine:
"The Go-Betweens - The Friends of Rachel Worth".
A fitting tribute to Grant.
Peace

Oh, I'm enjoying my Jazz travels immensely! Adding new recordings to my collection almost daily - so yeah, my credit cards are really taking it on the chin :)

"The Waterboys - Fishermans Blues":17:
the re-mastered Collectors Edition. Man, disc two is full of unreleased material, that would make an album in itself. Sounds so fresh, it's hard to believe that its almost 20 years old.
What great music.:6:
The B.O.T. is out and life is good.
Greetings to one and all.

I spent the first part of the week "working" overnights babysitting a crew of electricians and computer techs as they reconfigured the systems. Most around the office bristled at the idea but I welcomed the oppotunity for a little p & q to catch up. The reward--an unexpected long weekend. Aint life grand?
Easing into the twilight with Weather Report's Heavy Weather

David Clayton-Thomas--In Concert
Former frontman of Blood Sweat and Tears, recorded live at the Opera House in Toronto last fall.He has put together an eleven piece jazz/rock fusion group. The set list is mostly BST standards but with some suprises thrown in.The band is smoking and David is in great voice although not quite where he was 35 years ago but hey,who is.
Its great to hear those songs freshly done again.
