It was a pretty good musical week for me this week, listening to some great stuff:

    - RAY WILSON – Change
    - T NAฯVE – S/T
    - US – Eamon’s Day
    - NATHAN MAHL – Shadows Unbound
    - CARAVAN – Cunning Stunts
    - WISHBONE ASH – Argus (Remaster)
    - NILS PETTER MOLVAER – Khmer
    - KIN ZA ZA – Number One in Shambala
    - P.F.M. – A Celebration Live

Beyond these, I also received three new comps by Troy, all them also awesome:

    - Trip 2
    - Mental Flake
    - Garage Band

Also worth mentioning, I watched some awesome concert DVDs during this past week:

    - CAMEL – Coming of Age (watched it 3 times, and just can’t get tired of this wonderful concert dvd)
    - MARILLION – Live From Loreley
    - MOSTLY AUTUMN – The Story So Far

bought a cd by Appleseed Cast called MARE VITALIS (2000, Deep Elm records). Got turned onto them through a Davey comp that had the song "Fishing the Sky" - anyway, this is a pretty cool album by a young band doing a sort of interesting stew of post-rock and emo. Cul de Sac Eat World. Yea. Some nice textural guitar playing, though they do seem to rely on swirly, repeated figures a lot, common with this kind of music. The drummer is really good and his set sounds huge in the mix, the production overall is nice, if a little wooden. A little like a pencil drawing, that someone has rubbed a little bit with his hand by accident, it sort of has this haze, but it does fit the music well. Apparently, they've gone even more "post rock" since then by realeasing a double-album set "Low Level Owl 1 & 2" - and they do have a newer album since then that has gotten mixed reviews from what I have seen. It's always interesting to watch a young band sort of feel around for their voice. MARE VITALIS is very auspicious step in the evolution of this band.

    what else..

Dillinger Escape Plan - CALCULATING INFINITY again.. hehe..

    Hey Mercedes - LOSES CONTROL

The Prids - LOVE ZERO (thanks jc.. nice fuzzy goodness)

Slosh's new mix THIS TAINTED LIFE. It TAIN'T a bad comp at all.. I was amazed to find myself fully enjoying every one of the 18 minutes of "The Tain" by the Decemberists. Thanks for the fun.

My own Reggae Mix from last summer.. which reminds me I gotta get my head straight and start planning Jar's Reggae fest Summer 2004.. always fun to put a reggae mix together..

Quick and partial list from me...

    cLOUDDEAD - ten
Expiremental downbeat hip-hop. Personally, I hear more electronica influence than hip hop, but whatever. Interesting record that keeps creeping up on me the more I listen. If you liked Manitoba and the like last year this may be appealing.

    Tom Waits - Mule Variations
Hadn't pulled this one out for a while. Excellent record that rises near the top of the Waits catalog. Went way too long betwen listens.

Mott the Hoople: All the Young Dudes
If there are any big Bowie fans of the Ziggy Stardust era that don't listen to this one, you're missing out. Title track and a cover of Sweet Jane are a couple highlights of a great album.

    also listened to ...

Maxwell: Urban Hang Suite, Kinks: One for the Road, A bunch of Ray Charles, Dizzee Rascal: Boy in Da Corner, some Les Paul, Oscar Peterson: Nihgt Train, Charles Mingus: Ah Um, Judas Priest: British Steel, Gerry Rafferty: City to City, Hank Williams III, Husker Du: Zen Arcade, and a bunch of other stuff...

Station to Station, Young Americans, Aladdin Sane and Ziggy Stardust

Also listened to The Thrills, The Vines, The Stills
Ryan Adams - Rock n Roll
Dzihan & Kamien - Freaks and Icons
Robert Rich - Seven Veils (Davey put me on to this a long time ago - Thanks Dave)
    Snow Patrol - Final Straw

Man, I wish SOMEONE would make a Jam Band comp!

Zwan: Mary Star of the Sea
    Doves: Last Broadcast
RHCP: (can't remember the album title, but it's got a cool song about shutting off your TV)
    Speech: Spiritualized People
    Pearl Jam: Live from Atlanta
    Elton John: Captain Fantastic...

    vinyl:
    Sigor Ros: (black one)
    Led Zep: Coda
    Grateful Dead: Long Strange Trip

    comps:
    Mentalflake: Troy

    Bob Marley - Exodus.
    Marley comp from Geezer
    Stan Ridgway - Partyball
Opeth - Deliverance. Been meaning to pick up Blackwater Park but I keep putting it off.
Joe Jackson - Night and Day.
XTC - Oranges and Lemons. Each time I listen to this it gets better.
    XTC - Skylarking. Ditto.
Split Enz - Conflicting Emotions. Still growing on me.
Kraftwerk - The Mix. Not my cuppa. Pretty indigestible.
Asia - Astra. The first song was good the rest sucked. I remember hearing "Go" on the raydidio back in the day. I bought the cassette which is now languishing in a cool, dark place.
Kerry Livgren - Seeds of Change. Excellent. Nice to hear Ronnie James Dio in there.
Steve Walsh - Schemer Dreamer. Not bad but very formulaic in the 1980's arena rock style.
Zappa - Hot Rats. Great stuff. Been trying to find The Grand Wazoo short of ordering the damn thing.
Zappa - Jazz From Hell. I don't like this. Too inorganic. To much synclavier (which is a fancy word for digital music processing machine ala 1986). Troy's Garage Band effort was better. This won a Grammy
Zappa - One Size Fits All. Much better thank you.
Pink Floyd - Animals. This will be fresh 20 years from now. Timeless music.
Tull - Bursting Out, A and Stormwatch
Fuzzy Duck - Fuzzy Duck. I just love this 1970 UK rock band that only made this one album.
Mosty Autumn - Heroes Never Die. A greatest hits thing remastered and remixed by Bryan Josh who is the primary song writer and guitar player for the band.
Radiohead - The Bends. I'm not connecting with this like I did with OK Computer. I will keep trying.

    That is all.

    Darren

    Demetrio,

That Camel is perhaps the best ever dvd I have seen. It's simply stunning as to how good Andy is. Plus Colin Bass is no slouch, and that drummer, well, he is superb. I am glad to know you finally got to own this incredible dvd.

You would enjoy a lot the new Pallas dvd and the new Arena dvd too.

    Regards,

    Dave

Hmmmmm.....I don't even have Mare Vitalis so that was some trick on my part to comp a song from it, eh? Maybe someone else? Or maybe you were thinking of that Daydream comp, there were two songs from Low Level Owl 1, and also on the first Song of the Day comp there were two other songs from that same Low Level Owl. Brilliant album that remains a favorite of the 00's for me but that's still the only one I have, although I've often been tempted to get Volume 2 which remains a fixture on my wishlist (although it slips down every time I add something which means it's pretty far down now ). Stoney really liked the last album, as did many other people, but it did get a mixed critical reception. Guess it kind of straddled the two somewhat different directions the band has been taking and some people didn't like that, thinking that they weren't moving forward. You know how critics are!

EDIT I: And here's what I can come up with for the week in review....

    Emitt Rhodes
Best of Brian Eno (a Davey comp)
    Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
    Modest Mouse - Good News...
Twilight as played by the Twilight Singers
    Electrelane - The Power Out
    Volume 5 • 1972-1995 • Reggae Roots
    Best of REM (IRS)
Faces - A nod is as good as a wink.....
PJ Harvey - Is This Desire?

Just got Poll This by tentoze last night so in the middle of a spin now. Some nice stuff. Maybe not al solid old, but it is only the first spin ;-)

EDIT II: Wow, just got to Willard Grant Conspiracy. Those guys can do no wrong. Love it like fresh air.

    Les see:

The Early Gurus of Electronic Music: V/A. Really cool three disc set with an incredibly large + informative booklet with some info on all of the tracks with the forward penned by Brian Eno. I think the first one track is from the 1920's. Unfortunately I don't think it would be nearly as cool wtithout the companion piece.

Lynn Miles-Unravel. Kind of a Canadian Lucinda. Couple of good toons, probably more if you're into alt. country.

Turin Brakes-Ether Song. Very much like Starsailor Brit pop

The Trainspotting Soundtrack-putting the Rave back into rave recs.

Lot's and lots of Gary Numan, especially live. Speaking of live Gary Numan, I spotted a new 2 disc live album at Best Buy yesterday. It's a '97 performance so I doubt I'll grab it, but then again...

Various comps that I need to take some time to mention, especially Troy's cover comp and his comp of original compositions. Both are very cool and I've been remiss to not mention them or send Troy an email. Been busy is my only excuse. Actually got offered a job out of the blue a few weeks ago so I'm back to getting a paycheck, not big by any means, but a paycheck none the less. Still busy doing my other things which is nice because I'm the boss and can listen to whatever I want. I guess I'm saying sorry for the delay in response and thank you Troy!

More but I've got to get back at it.

Not a lot, but all very good

New Pornographers - Electric version. CeeDee. Good Lord! Where has this been for the last year? The boy lent it to me. Dad's gonna stiff him. Its staying.

Lets Active - Cypress/Afoot. CeeDee. Just as good as the above. only had a great boot from BradH as a reference for Lets Active. Glad I sprung for this new remaster.

Willie Nelson - Phases and Stages. LP. My first Willie, the best Willie

Jerry Jeff Walker - Viva Terlingua. LP. My first, his best...

Neil Diamond - Hot August Nights 2 LP. Put in on in the living room, raised the windows, and had a few margaritas on the deck with Mrs. Nasty at sunset listening to this. Not bad at all.....

White Stripes - Elephant 2LP. Damn, this is great! Why hasn't anybuddy mentioned these guy/gal? (kidding). Side two, cuts 2,3, & 4 are just awesome. I wasn't going to get this, but Circuit City has the vinyl, colored vinyl, for $12.99 w/free shipping so,.....

    http://entertainment.circuitcity.com...did=VTW27148.1

Gil Scott Heron - Best Of. LP. Winter In America and The Revolution Will Not Be Televised are probably now considered to be rather sophmoric, but back in 1975 or therebouts, it was pretty fookin radical.

Thats about it. A buncha imported classical and RCA shaded dogs classical LPs, but I'm not familiar enuf with composers and orchestras/conductors to give a decent reference from memory. I do remember some great music from Peer Gynt and some van Cliburn that was borderline stunning on London.
Do I have to spell it out?

    Clinic - Walking With Thee
...Trail of Dead - Source Tags and Code
    Kids s/t
CKY - Infilitrate, Destroy, Rebuild - I don't know what I saw in this POS before, but I ain't liking it much anymore.

I guess you're magic then. Actually, someone around here put that song on a comp, because I ripped it off there and slapped it on one of my own I made last year. I guess I associated the band with you because of the other tunes you put on comps, but I guess with that particular track, it was someone else. I suppose most likely it was Rae then. Yea, I bet it was Rae, from that GET YER ASS OUT comp, now that I think of it. How can one forget that 2 disc comp with the sweaty naked fat man on the cover. But yea, they're good, and I look forward to hearing those LOW LEVEL OWLS.

Isn't that one of the most incredible recordings you've ever heard? Great music too. Love it. Haven't listened to it in ages myself - need to pull that one out and give it a few spins.

Been hearing a lot of good stuff about that new Snow Patrol. You guys around here sure are on top of things these days. How do you like it? RIYL?

EDIT: Oh, I see that the Snow Patrol has been available in "a sometimes wet and damp York, England" for about half a year. It was just released here a couple weeks ago, I think. Looks like you get bonus tracks too! Of course, you guys pay about $25 for your CDs too, eh?

    Some NEW stuff this week.

Stan Ridgway has a new album called "Snakebite". I got an advance copy a few days ago and it's pretty good. The writing is as enjoyable as ever, but I find the arrangements to be a little too sparse for my taste. there's a great song on here; "Talking Wall of Voodoo Blues" about the history of WOV and how they were just a bunch of kids that got screweed by the business. It's really tongue in cheek, yet still bitter as hell. Overall, the songs are similar to Anatomy, but the arrangements are similar to Black Diamond. Fans will love it, but it's not the place for newbies.

Air- Talkie Walkie. Found myself in a Tower over the weekend and they were playing this in the store. I LOVED it's low key and simple melodic style. It's arty as all hell, yet poppy at the same time. Mellow sunday music.

Mad Rhetorik sent me "Spiral Architect", a prog metal disc and I gotta just say "NO!" Didn't like it one bit. It's just a bunch of notes streaking up and down scales with a screechy catterwauling singer. The writing and melody was pretty much non existant from where I sit. Sorry. Thanks for sending it Mad, it was worth a try . . .

And I'm glad that you guys are spinning and enjoying the Garage Band disc. It was an incredible amount of work to compose and construct. Thanks for taking the time to give it listen.

I take it you don't agree. You're a Zappa freak, you know what Jazz From Hell sounds like right?

Your Garage Band stuff was much more interesting and had a more organic sound than FZ's album. I'm not saying what FZ was trying to do was wrong or awful or stupid or anything it's just that I didn't like it. I suppose 18 years of technological advances was to your advantage. Frank did the best he could with what was available.

Anyway, great job on the Garage Band comp Troy.

Yeah, Spiral Architect's not for everyone. The singer is definitely hard to get used to. I think it would have been better if these guys made an instrumental disc like Gordian Knot, since it is obvious that they have tons of technical ability. Maybe too much, in fact. At least they don't try to stretch the song lengths, I think it would just become too exhausting to listen to on a regular basis.

It is the band's first album, and looking at it from that standpoint it's pretty impressive. Hopefully by the next one they'll ditch the awful singer, and try to incorporate a little more melody into their music.

No problem, mang. I'm glad you went through the trouble, it's been in my player quite a few times the past week. "Klaxon Dance," "Doppelganger," and "Morocco Mole" are all crazy catchy. And yes, it's better than what I've heard from Jazz From Hell.

    Thanks for saying that.

Haven't heard JFH in a long time. 10+ years ayway. I recall it being brittle and kinda harsh. As you say, the tech that makes the timbres has improved vastly in 18 years.

Still, I think the writing on that disc is remarkable. It's about as fast and complex as can be. I've heard a few covers of some songs from that album by human bands and they are amazing songs.

Thanks again. I just gotta say that JFH is an unfair comparison becuase the tech is so much better today. Imagine what a real musician, someone with a basis in theory etc could do with it! Nothing would make me smile more than to see what all you guys could do with it too. I'm working on some new songs too. I've developed a really great grindy guitar sound so I'm exploring that a lot. I'm also thinking about buying a mic. Lots of people have told me to add vox, but I'm more than a little intimidated by that . . .

Just got done listening to tentoze's new Poll This comp and it's a good one! With just one spin under my belt I can't say much yet other than it'll be in heavy rotation for a while (and I need to hear me some more Frames). See, this is why I haven't completely given up on this place

    the list:

*Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News
*Porcupine Tree - In Absentia (DVD-A) bland, bland, bland
*Sunny Day Real Estate - The Rising Tide (LP) musically kinda similar to the PT album above, but done by a band with their own fuckin' sound!!! (makes all the difference)
*Roger Waters - In The Flesh - Live (DVD)
    *SFA - Guerrilla
    *SFA - Radiator
*McLusky - My Pain And Sadness Is More Sad And Painful Than Yours (LP)
    *Uncle Tupelo - Anthology (LP)

[QUOTE=Slosh] (and I need to hear me some more Frames).

Me too, Sloshy..... That cut is from Setlist- kinda worrried me to sling a live cut in the middle of stuff, but THAT song knocks me backward everytime I hear it, so I decided what the phuch- I'm on the hunt for some studio stuff now. Them Irish working-class boys rawk pretty good.

    Destroyer – Your Blues
Great album to these ears so far. It branches out a little stylistically from and is more laid back than previous albums, but is very nice.

    Glenn Branca – The Ascension
I'm new to this and generally I'm not much into instrumental stuff, but this is simply amazing. I have no idea how to describe this, but it's 4 guitars (some of which, if not all, are out of tune), bass, and drums. Wild stuff.

Slayer – Haunting the Chapel EP

Telefon Tel Aviv – Fahrenheit Fair Enough

    Dismemberment Plan – Is Terrified

Archers of Loaf – Vs. the Greatest of All Time EP

    Odds – Nest
Picked this up used, along with another album of theirs, and both may go back. Pretty mediocre and boring.

Tripping Daisy – i am an ELASTIC FIRECRACKER

    Afghan Whigs – Black Love

Mclusky - My Pain and Sadness Is More Sad and Painful Than Yours

Beatles – Past Masters Vol. 1

    Howard Jones – Human's Lib

Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime

    Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Now here's a "classic" album that I just don't get. I finally purchased it after years of not delving into his catalog. It's pleasant enough, but just not my style I guess.
