    This Was (Very) Difficult

To all those who complain that the "Top Three" is too difficult, here is a twist :
We can relax the rule to make it "Top Ten"; but tighten it up again with the amazing writing and proliferation of the Beatles...........try to do it in order like Letterman...........

My Top Ten Beatle songs :
    10) I Want To Hold Your Hand
    9) Paperback Writer
    8) Drive My Car
    7) Eight Days A Week
    6) The Long And Winding Road
    5) Penny Lane
    4) We Can Work It Out
    3) In My Life
    2) Strawberry Fields
    1) A Day In The Life
    old Denon
    older Bose
    new Velodyne sub
new Sony 1080 LCD & BluRay
Big, clean sound @ 800 watts

With that title I was expecting a Was (Not Was) related post.

Coming up with 3 is too difficult...

I couldnt even come up with one...

    Bugs

    All these...

    I got bugs
I got bugs in my room
    Bugs in my bed
    Bugs in my ears
    Their eggs in my head
    Bugs in my pockets
    Bugs in my shoes
Bugs in the way I feel about you

    Bugs on my window
    Trying to get in
    They don’t go nowhere
    Waiting, waiting...
    Bugs on my ceiling
    Crowded the floor
    Standing, sitting, kneeling...
    A few block the door

    And now the question’s:
    Do I kill them?
    Become their friend?
    Do I eat them?
    Raw or well done?
    Do I trick them?
    I don’t think they’re that dumb
    Do I join them?
    Looks like that’s the one

I got bugs on my skin
Tickle my nausea I let it happen again
    They’re always takin’ over
I see they surround me, I see...
    See them deciding my fate
Oh, that which was once...was once up to me...
    Now it’s too late

I got bugs in my room...one on one
    That’s when I had a chance
    I’ll just stop now
I’ll become naked and with the...
    I’ll become one
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

My list would be very, very different from yours. I'm especially puzzled by the schmaltzy #6 selection. But there is absolutely no doubt that we agree on the #1 spot. What an awesome, timeless song that is.

OK, I guess it's easy for me to poke holes... but I'd better put up my own list for public ridicule:

    1. A Day in the Life
    2. Let It Be
    3. Hey Jude
    4. I Saw Her Standing There
    5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
    6. And Your Bird Can Sing
    7. Paperback Writer
    8. Tomorrow Never Knows
    9. Eleanor Rigby
    10. The 'Golden Slumbers' medley

Honorable mention to one of the all-time greatest rock songs, "Twist 'n Shout," which would have easily cracked the top 5 if it wasn't a cover tune (and therefore doesn't count).

I was 10 years old when the Beatles invaded America.
Many of those selections are due to personal reflections during my adolescent years.......so I guess I can never deny some level of schmaltz !

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" was my first record ever, when I was like 4 years old. That one was mine, and "Love Me Do" was my brother's. We played them both over and over again, every day.

"Let It Be" was the first single I ever bought with my own allowance money, when I was 6 or 7. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was so grateful to my mother for driving me down to Glendale Mall in Indianapolis so I could buy it.

I'll go to my grave with those memories.

I'll play. Please don't tell me all the reasons that my choices are wrong though.

    10) Drive my Car
    9) Lady Madonna
    8) Hey Jude
    7) Eleanor Rigby
    6) Helter Skelter
    5) I Want To Hold Your Hand
    4) 8 Days a Week
    3) I Saw Her Standing There
    2) Back in the USSR

    1) Come Together

    What the hell.

    A Day in the Life
    Something
    In My Life
    While My Guitar....
    Come Together
    Strawberry Fields Forever
    Across the Universe
    Eleanor Rigby
    Revolution
    We Can Work it Out

They are not 'ranked' by the way, just my favorite ten...perhaps.
I call my bathroom Jim instead of John so I can tell people that I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

    I'm Only Sleeping
    Girl
    Glass Onion
You Never Give Me Your Money
    Eleanor Rigby
    Nowhere Man
    Fixing A Hole
    Savoy Truffle
    Cry Baby Cry
    Hey Bulldog

Not necessarily in that order. BTW, old news but the 2009 remasters sound awesome. Too bad no SACD or DVD-A versions exist (not counting Love).

Look at all these great lists of incredible work posted by our RR friends.
There really are no wrong answers.

    In addition,
I'm impressed to see many songs reflected here that were written by Harrison.

They could have been if McCartney/Lennon weren't such song writing hogs.

I'm a much bigger Harrison fan than Beatles fan. I just never got into the Beatles much. I'm only 36 so it was backward path for me. For me it was ELO to Cloud Nine to the Wilbury's to Harrison's back catalog to "He was in the Beatles? Cool!" I only have exactly one Beatles LP and one 45. I have more Yoko than Beatles. I am now working through Lennon's solo back catalog. The biggest hurdle to getting to the actual Beatles for me is an inability to hear all that familiar music with fresh ears. Its just kind of background wallpaper music to me. I don't mean that pejoratively, its just from familiarity, but not familiarity bred from active listening. I figure I'll actually get to the Beatles within the next few years.

    ...don't follow instructions very well.

Actually, I'm a big Harrison fan too, but more the 'All Things Must Pass' that the latter years. 'Isn't it a Pity' is among my favorites and was actually written in '66 while he was still with the Beatles.

Unless you were with me in 1962 listening to Gene Pitney, Elvis, Chubby Checker, Patsy Cline, Pat Boone, Bobby Vee, Dion, Del Shannon and Roy Orbison, you will never understand what the Beatles brought to music and America.

But I do hope you, at some point, value their contribution and learn to enjoy the talent.

Yea, that is pretty hard ... probably wouldn't have much flow as a record in that order

    1. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End
    2. Cry Baby Cry
    3. A Day in the Life
    4. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
    5. Strawberry Fields Forever
    6. Dear Prudence
    7. Things We Said Today
    8. Norwegian Wood (The Bird Has Flown)
    9. In My Life
    10. And Your Bird Can Sing

Not really, but kinda in order:

Side 2 of Abbey Road (it's all one song anyway, right?)
    She Said She Said
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
    Help
    Ticket to Ride
    Hello Goodbye
    Tomorrow Never Knows
    You Won't See Me
    Mr Kite
    Lovely Rita

    I could come up with a different 10 too . . .

Everyone's favorite, Day in the Life is way down the list for me. Never understood the attraction, really. Shmaltzy? That one's got it in spades.
