Gene Simmons wants to sue college kids

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071114/music_nm/kiss_dc_1

I know he has some valid points, but its difficult to read it coming from a multi-millionaire. And he's still just as arrogant as ever.

Fact is, music has to compete with movies and games now, where before, they didn't have to. And music's nose is bleeding from the ass kicking its taking.

    He'll get over it.

    Simmons is a goof -
Quite the ego on that guy. His points aren't as strong as he thinks -
The only reason why gold is expensive is because we all agree that it is. There's no real use for it, except we all agree and abide by the idea that gold costs a certain amount per ounce. As soon as you give people the choice to deviate from it, you have chaos and anarchy. And that's what going on.
Who's to say it was nature's intent that music be given an intrinsic financial value?

Simmons might think the "new business model" Radiohead and NIN are trying out is a failure but the fact is it's not new at all and has continued to prove itself to be infallible.

Music existed long before people were copyrighting, packaging, and distributing recordings for profit and will continue to exist and be made long after people stop buying it.
In fact, the pay-for-live-performance model precedes the album-sales model by centuries.
Only in the last, what? 60 years did the album sales deviate from that trend and overtake performance revenue? And that's only for the biggest name stars? Great for Gene that he capitalized on that erratic trend.

I'm not a proponent of stealing music at all but there's a reason Radiohead and NIN have dropped the labels - the industry wants the whole f*cking world to make it as easy for them to make a lot of money as possible, and to find ways to continue that gold rush in perpetuity...lables are demanding cuts of the merchandising and touring revenues now to offset what they deem they're losing due to piracy and rising costs. Eveyone makes money but the artist, and when deals fall through it's just too easy to blame the end-consumer who may or may not be stealing music.

In a sick, weird, unintentional way, all of us stealing, crooked, internet-thiefs might be liberating the artists from corporate tyranny and putting the power, if not the money back in the hands of the artists. I'll trust them to discover or devise the most efficient and effective way or distributing their work to the consumer.

Back to the bottom of the joke-trivia card deck for you Gene.

Very true. You don't have to go back much more than 100 years to when musicians and other entertainers were looked down on like beggers looking for a hand out.

Interesting point of view. As a musician who's NEVER had a hit record or album but who know's how artists get screwed and have been getting screwed since the advent of recorded music I say great. Let the whole house of cards fall down. Let the entire record industry get blown up. I don't care if millions of non-muscians, middle management record executives lose their jobs. They produce nothing they're owed nothing.

The RIAA is trying to put the genie back in the bottle they could've gotten together and devised a comprehensive internet download protocal and pricing scheme that would've allow the Record company's to make some money, but no, they wanted to try and keep it all and now they'll wind up with no money at all. Good, fine... they can join the horse and buggy makers in the dustbin of history. What kills me is that the Record Execs are now saying.... "well we can't make any money off of you by selling records in stores so please let us make some money off you by selling tee-shirts at your shows."

My god how the mighty have fallen.

Yep. It's all their fault. They wanted the biggest slice of the pie and then put up a barbed-wire fence around the rest of it. They failed. They lost their ability to manipulate the market and predict trends so now the're stuck in the hole they've made. Here's a quote from another website concerning the same subject (I think its a great analogy):

" Grocery store-A usually does not have customers buying chicken eggs by the score, then one day stop carrying chicken eggs and start telling everyone quail eggs are the only eggs they can eat. Also, they don't start telling every other grocery store who carries quail eggs that because they (store-A) breed quail that all quail eggs are automatically considered their quail eggs and everybody must pay a royalty on any quail eggs, even if store-A does not own the quail in question."
