Sounds Good!
I wasn't around for the original Sounds Good group compilations but I'm here now so hows about another installment? Criteria is simple:
> First and foremost it has to be a song you really dig. Well-recorded audiophilia pap is still pap.
> It has to be one of those recordings that makes all the money you spent on your audio gear seem justified.
Just upload a song to www.mediafire.com in a lossless or uncompressed format and post the link in this thread. If we get enough participation I'll sequence and edit (if necessary) it into a downloadable FLAC-8 comp.
To start things off my pick is Calexico's awesome instrumental track, "El Picador". All of Calexico's LPs and CDs I own have great sonics but this isn't the version from Hot Rail, but rather it's from the infamous China Theater, Stockholm show recorded in April, 2003. This is an amateur (supposedly) soundboard recording that sounds better than most official live albums. There's a real sense of space. There's real dynamic range. The horns have bite without sounding harsh. The drums sound like real drums. Etc., etc. Best of all the band has never sounded better.

Which song? "Wolves (Song Of The Shepherd's Dog)"? Don't bother upping it 'cause I have it. Wish it had more dynamic range but otherwise I agree it sounds pretty decent.

Too late. uploaded and posted.
Dynamics? That's ship sailed a long time ago. You're not going to find it on a modern recording.
Whaddiya want? Something you ain't got? You have Candylion by Gruff Ryhs?
If it has to be something you ain't got, it'll prolly fall under the prog heading. I'll think about this some more.
hhhmmm....maybe Once by Blackfield.
I'll wrack my brain for a while.

Hey Slosh, which one of Calixco do you recommend the least?
One of my favorite album right now is In the Reins by Calixco and Iron & Wine. 3LB, check it out if you havent already.
Peace

Not true. Latest Wilco and Shellac, for example.

You probably heard that for the first time through me via an uploaded comp. :p Naw, the point is for you to pick something. This comp ain't meant for me; it's for all of us.

Feast Of Wire
The Black Light
Garden Ruin
Spoke
Hot Rail
So I guess I like Hot Rail least but that's kinda like saying which Ferrari would you want to own least :)

I'd love to but I'm an idiot
How does one upload one of these Flac lossless thingamajigs?
Or.....if you have Dinosaur Act by Low, and can upload it for me, it has some supoib sound - especially on vinyl.
I should do some research anyway as I do want to get a squeezebox at some point down the road.

I don't have that one. You can just upload a WAV file if that's easier for you (or AIFF or Apple Lossless or WMA Lossless . . . doesn't matter to me).
Also I should point out that this isn't necessarily intended to be new music only. You got something that's 60 years old and sounds great that'll work too.

I like the idea a lot. A whole lot actually.
I have the first two volumes and you make a good point. There are some incredible good sounding stuff on there but I don't really think that it's stuff that people really liked listening to. I think the focus was only well recorded stuff for a lot of people. At least that's what it seemed like to me. What I did was pull the really great stuff off the two and condensed it to one disc. To this day, it's my demo disc.
I've got a baseball tournament this weekend but I'll try to find some time. A lot of what I think is good is actually quite compressed when looking at it through a spectragraph. Davey pointed that out to me on something that I thought was well recorded and it turned out not to be so great. Been a bit gun shy about making pronouncements since then.

I almost lifted my needle up after 2 songs, but forced myself to sit thru it. But after I got used his singing style, it started to grow on me.
I love how they can throw in a groovy instrumental like "Crumble", and make you wanna hit a Greyhound station with "Güero Canelo".
The album is worth a 2nd spin.

Thanks for playing. Remember when we used to wonder why people declined free music just for the asking? Hell, now it's just a few mouse clicks away and still very few takers.
I think I've wasted enough of my time with this place.
I'll still have plenty of new and interesting music to explore. Too bad others won't get a chance to experience it for themselves. Their loss.

Dammit Slsohy, don't leave yet.
Just got done with a several day interview process for a new position which became much more involved than I'd anticipated. I should have the majority of Wednesday to mess around and upload some goodies (as well as get the "Mystery Discs" in order).
Rawk on, bruh, rawk on...

I need to be checking out some Calexico in my future.
I don't know how I arrived at Gruff Ryhs-Candylion, but between you, Swish, and Davey, I get most of my indy recs from this place, so your presence will be missed. Sorry I'm not able to reciprocate the recs myself (knowing you're not much for prog).
This might be a stressful, busy time of year for some; maybe this place will pick up in the future.

Here's small selection of some good sounding things...
Two tracks off the first David Johansen & The Harry Smiths release, excellent natural sound on both and the music is excellent as well, old style acoustic blues:
<a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?gmlbgefxhxc">Darling Do You Remember Me</a> & <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?t1bm3y2w0aa">Somebody Buy Me A Drink</a>
If you like those, the whole CD is similar as is their follow-up, both with excellent sound throughout.
Now, in case you want a little bass, here's a little something off Massive Attack's 100th Window:
<a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?szjmmmnbdm1">Future Proof</a>
And, something nice and lush with a little reggae/dubby vibe from Thievery Corporation:
<a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?tzfqwk9kyya">The Richest Man In Babylon</a>
That's all I had time to upload for now. Fun thread.

I’ll play, after all there’s no accounting for taste right? Can't say these were carefully selected. They're just things I always thought sounded good. (Flac)
You Can Never Go Home – House of Freaks (1988)
I always liked this one. Nice spare sound.
http://www.mediafire.com/?3bmixdt9tym
No Big Deal – Love & Rockets (1989)
Crisp.
http://www.mediafire.com/?ev9jbgmm2ix
Cumbia & Jazz Fusion – Mingus Big Band (1997)
A long one. Someday I’d like to hear it on a big system. I think it makes a good demo track. Everything from Conch shell to tuba. I had to zip it in two parts. Open part one with a zip extractor and it should ask for part two. Total size 104Mb.

I've been meaning to play too, just can't get work to get out of the way.
Been contemplating and came up with a couple of tracks that I think sound good but I haven't looked at the wav form yet to see if it stands up to scrutiny.
FYI, IF anyone is interested, I looked around on the internet and came up with a good place to look for some ideas to get me going. I found a great site to start with and was pleasantly surprised to see Toy Matinee was regarded as a 5 star reference CD. Never really my thing, but Troy digs it!
Here's the site if anyone is interested: http://johnvestman.com/commercial_cds.htm

Now, I've to to prepare for a group of international investors who are looking to purchase this property! Like I don't have enough to do as it is : (

Not that I'm sure this is anywhere close to ethical, but here's a few well recorded and mastered recent ones with good dynamics and sound (imo) ...

Nina Nastasia - One Old Woman.flac
http://www.mediafire.com/?bvzidn1himg

Don't you hate self-important bores like that? Geez, next time just tell him to go dance about architecture somewhere else!
:)
Hehehe, wonder what record it was? The National? Hopefully not that awful sounding Interpol CD!

Not really sure it which one it was, but it was something that I thought sounded pretty dang good and then you posted a screen shot of the wav form. Far from being bored, it was a real eye opener. First of all it made me realize that I am way more interested in the music then the production values. I am reminded of J saying something like he'd rather listen to the Ramones on a boombox then most of the other crap on a high dollar system. I got more than a touch of that in me since I've not heard any CD I can't listen to based only on the recording quality.
More than that though, it made me realize perhaps my head isn't entirely on straight and my "golden ears" are perhaps more lead then gold.
Think we've made enough posts on his thread to calm Slosh down?
jc
still waiting on the international consortium to come through...
-
I'd puke a couple of lumps of coal/diamonds for you guys, but they are 192k mp3s. Are you golden-eared snobs ok with that?
-
So, why won't this .flac file play in iTunes? I double click it from the desktop and nothing happens.
