I'm looking for, someone, just a little bit like you

Tunesday in disguise... with glasses. Let's see if there's any nibbles. My week of tunes is (not surprisingly) finishing off with one of those mostly unknown and unappreciated gems of the new millenium that seem to gather around me like moss on a log (of course, there are always gonna be much richer and maybe more descriptive metaphors one such as Sticks or Swish could fit here, but if you can't think of anything good to say, or at least something mildly amusing, try to keep it under the wraps ).

But back to the title, that Flaming Stars "Sunset & Void" record always gets a lot of spins. Just picked up the last one they did a couple years ago called "Born Under a Bad Neon Sign" and been liking that a lot. And at the same time I picked up the fairly recent Dodos record from this year called "The Visiter" and imalikinme those folkie tunes. Good stuff.

...sad. For pity's sake, I listened to G. Love and Special Sauce Superhero Brother yesterday. An OK album with a couple good tracks.

I listened to me some Guster last week, and when one of my peeps heard it, they said, "I didn't think you listened to mainstream music", and I thought to myself, "these guys were mainstream?" I guess I'm way out of the loop. But then again, I rarely listen to radio anymore. But these guys were on the radio? They had hits? hhmmm... if only radio did play stuff like this.

I also listened to Paul K & The Weathermen, having been pointed his direction only a few months ago. This album, Love Is A Gas, came out 10 years ago! What would my CD collection look like without the internet...now I know why most people I know don't buy CDs anymore. BTW, this is a cool looking CD, what with its poker machine cover and its roulette wheel disc inside. Oh yeah, and the musics good too - singer-song writerish, only with smokey bar band accompaniment.

The Morning Benders, which I mentioned last week, is quite the grower. Its fun stuff but I doubt it'll have staying power.

And if I did another rock/jazz comp (remember razz anyone) I'd have to include something off the Feast Of Wire album by Calexico. This is a great collection of observational style writing about heartache, misfits, and jazzy Texmex - who knew these went together so well.

I can't think of much else that wasn't covered in last weeks thread. I'm listeneing to a lot of jazz as of late, mostly stuff I've owned for years. One of my fave is Bob James's Straight Up, his trio project, which is quite different from his usual brand of GRPish smooth jazz. Great sounding disc.

I've been spinning that Brian Vander Ark disk mentioned in another thread.

On vacation this past week I spent most of my time doing the iPod Shuffle on the Easy Listening genre. Lots of Hem, Ray Lamontagne, Amanda Marshall, Gordon Lightfoot, Josh Ritter, Justin Rutledge...just to name a few.

I've been quite busy with other priorities this summer and haven't purchased anything new in several months. I think I feel a big shopping spree coming on soon...

put together a comp for our roadtrip to Atlanta and Northeast Ga this past weekend that included tracks from G.Love's Superhero Brother, Lemonade and a greatist hits of 90s in anticipation of the show we saw Fri. night at the Chastain Park Amphitheater. (hey noddin, w/such a long career you can cherry-pick enough G.Love tracks to fill a cd. I think Lemonade is a better album than SHB.) Jon Butler Trio opened. Both artists had special guests join them. It was definitely a fun show, nice venue (a little dated, but nice), weather was perfect - overcast and windy, rain threatened but never fell. Any other night in August in the deep south would have been next to miserable. I had two chances to see G.Love closer to home last year but work got in the way. Fortunately, we were able to put together a great long-weekend trip that included the show. I also discovered a great beer in Helen, Ga. - Erdinger dark.

Anyhow, traveling tunes also included tracks from Vampire Weekend s/t, MMJ's Evil Urges (been all the way through this one only once or twice), some old Beck and the Yayhoos. Of course the tunes had to be "common ground" stuff that the wife either liked or could tolerate.

I keep listening to that latest Escovedo, which continues to please me more every time. Played the new Calexico a couple times and it's alright, but I've never been as enamoured of them as some here. Also, a couple African artists' cd's I picked up in Johannesburg a couple weeks ago- Selaelo Selota and Salif Keita- nice stuff.

But mostly, I'm impatiently waiting for the mailman to bring me the new Willard Grant Conspiracy.

Yea, I know what you mean, I was kinda surprised too a few years ago when finding out how popular they were. Must be an east coast thing. Not the greatest singer, but a very solid band ... Guster covers entire Violent Femmes debut

Devotion + Doubt was playing in my car for the last few days, off and on, but mostly on. I've become like a Richard Buckner junkie when it comes to those first three CDs. Probably not healthy ... but click here for a blogger guy that sounds almost just like me (and like he says, D+D is one of the best ever)...

    Reaching away goodbye rye,
Been bled on down the road,

Wow, I had no idea! Where'd you order it from? I see it's available to US junkies at his site for $15 pp. My finger is on the trigger. Have you heard much about it? Probably doesn't matter, another big favorite, especially if he keeps regarding the end on this one instead of letting it roll. Pilgrim Road, kind of a cool minimalist cover ...

BTW, Buckner and Escoveda toured and played together a few years ago and left some great musical documents that are now easily found around the web, mostly some of Buckner's best songs which is fine by me. Wish they'd done a record. Sample below of the one I just mentioned in post above (they don't really get it kicked into gear for about 1:45 so be patient)...

Thanks for the heads up, always like it when my music money finds a straighter and much less costly path to the artist. The trigger has been pulled and the new WGC is now on my hotly anticipated list too.

I finally recognized one of Davey's cryptic song/lyric title references - sweet.

I haven't bought much new stuff lately - still enjoying the JohnVanderslice album that I received thanks to the kindness of a certain stranger. Been chowing down on a steady diet of Wire - new and old - in anticipation of their upcoming show that I scored a ducket to. The new album; "Object 47" is really very good. Also been brushing-up on my Richard Davies that is NOT Telegraph, thanks to the kindness of another stranger.

Other than those - I've been going a bit nuts at the Obner site downloading 10 song samplers from artists that I'm deficient on...

    The Saints
    16 Horsepowwer
    Drive by Truckers
    Jim White
    Johnny Dowd
    The Go-Betweens
    Teenage Fanclub
    Primal Scream
    Mouse on mars
    Beth Orton
    Gillian Welch
    The Dukes of Stratosfear
    Broken Family Band
    Johnny Thunders
    The Blue Nile
    Kraftwerk
    Loudon Wainright III

And the list goes on - it's been a veritable smorgasbord of new music discovery.

Ya know, there's really only those that know and love Richard Davies ... and those that haven't heard him. "Chips Rafferty", and really just about everything off of that trilogy of Crowd, Telegraph and Barbarians is a gem if you love that early to mid 70s Bowie sound. Though my heart is clearly with the first one right now, "Jubilee" playing as I type, an obsession that I gladly accept.

    The Go-Betweens

Man, that's a good list of stuff to be discovering, and the Go-Betweens have such a rich history for those of us that love that pop music. Think I made a thread about 16 Lovers Lane awhile back, classic record. Oh man, just searched and it's another embarrassing moment from the archives, the sound of one man clapping in an empty room

Back to the 80s with 16 Lovers Lane ... very very nice

To paraphrase Explosions in the sky; "Rave recs is a cold dead place". 16 Lovers Lane is now at the top of my "must-buy" list, so keep that one-hand clapping, Davey, you never know who's listening.

I haven't heard Lemonade, but have the self-titled, Yeah, It's That Easy, and Electric Mile. Never really listen to Electric Mile but I'd rank the other two as better than Superhero Brother. Should I be looking for Lemonade?

I've got my ticket sitting out where I can look at it in anticipation...haven't heard their new one but have almost bit the bullet a few times. Chairs Missing has been in the car for the past couple weeks.
So, I just picked up the Jay Reatard 06-07 Singles album. Damn!! If you like Wire, Tall Dwarfs, and, I think anyways, Bad Brains - this is some awesome stuff. I missed his show recently and am kickin' myself now. The cd comes w/ a dvd of live stuff too...they just rock out as hard as they can but somehow churn out the most catchy, hook-laden songs I've heard in many a moon. Plus, the only cover is a Go-Betweens tune.
