Rave Recs Sampler for the general population

Been pretty busy lately and now that school is out for the summer it's probably not likely to get better anytime soon. Just wanted to give thanks to everyone on the board for contributions that I made for some friends. Was having dinner with three other families Sunday night and the discussion turned to music. Playing at the time was ABBA, some music from a musical of theirs I guess. Wasn't really my style I suppose, and that's ok. Facing the quizzing I fessed up to the following:

    do you like Tom Petty?
    -no

    Journey?
    -no
    Really? Everyone likes Journey.
    -guess not everyone.

    John Cougar Mellonhead?
    -no

    Elton John?
    -no

    Neil Diamond?
    Not really

You get the picture. So then it came down to who do you like. Blank stares all the way around. I found it really funny that not one person had even heard of the Clash or the Ramones. I can see not knowing Lali Puna. Until a month or so ago I hadn't either but the Clash? Come on. So I'm making them a comp of the some of the best toons I heard from you all here. I'd use all of my own but I know what a resounding failure that would be. Using toons and discs first discovered here I put together what I hope to be a "can't miss" comp of some of the best of 2003. Guess I've learned that the entire concept of "can't miss" is flawed from the get go but with your help I've given it a shot. So, thanks to Davey, Nobody, Stone, Swish, Tentoze, Slosh and everyone else for giving me so much to pick from.

I'd like one, please. I just sent you an email via the secure function on this board...didn't know if you had my current addy. Looks like something I need!

Those backyard barbeque conversations can be downright awkward when craptastic AOR is the subject du jour. But it could be worse. It could be Toby Keith.

Done and done. Got addresses for both and they'll go out tomorrow along with another disc I offered up to a bud and to date have neglected to send.

Hey Jim, Could I get one too? There's quite a bit of stuff on there that I don't yet have. PM me if you need my address, which is the same as it ever was.

    Thanks,

This is funny. I try to avoid these conversations like the plague unless it's someone I think might have a clue who The Smiths or Joy Division (for example) are. Plus, some people immediately think you're an elitist because you don't like Styx (or Journey like your situation). I try to switch the conversation to sports or something.

But if people I don't know ask what I listen to, I just spout off a bunch of genres/sub-genres, which typically prompts the question, "What bands do you like, though?" To which I'll respond something like "Oh lately it's been The Shins, Built to Spill, Silver Jews, and Notwist." That's usually the end of the conversation unless they're daring and they'll ask "Anyone I've heard of?" Sometimes just to screw with people (if it's someone who looks annoyed at the answer and I don't care about it) I'll answer "Septic Death? Dayglo Abortions? Stockholm Monsters?" But usually I'm polite and try to come up with something like the Clash or Johnny Cash, which I assume (like you) most people our age have heard of.
And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

Jim, when faced with conversations along these lines I try to find out what they like first, then maybe add one or two groups from that genre that I like and they would know but didn't mention and then maybe add a few groups we speak of here. Along these lines, "so you like Loverboy?38 Special?Marchall Tucker?" damn, then you'll really love Cracker and Southern Culture On The Skids" or something like that. If they like Journey, I wouldn't know what to throw back at em. ELO? Supertramp?

I'll like one of them you've cooked up too. David

as a young guy i assume that a lot of my peers have a clue about the great music out there... but no. more often than not i'm left in awe both by what they DO listen to and what they haven't even heard of.

i met this really great girl this past weekend. she's from SoCal, here for the summer. convo turns to music and she loses huge points when she explains that she likes country and rap - the radio versions of both. this, from a writer... an artistic, creative, thoughtful person. i was just dumbfounded and had a hard time not showing it.

so now i'm on a mission, but don't know where to start. a few tracks from this comp could work. the wrens maybe? sun kil moon? ... meh...

I get this a lot. I think the girls just enjoy messing with me. They know I'm into music, and they know that a lot of people are turned off by country and/or rap (I don't usually get both, though -- that's what makes me think that this girl is really messing with you), so they say that, I think, just to turn me off. Perhaps they're conducting a test of some sort, I don't know...

Speaking of hot chicks and music turn-offs, I met this one girl. So the conversation turns to music, as it eventually does, and I ask her her favourite band. "Genesis, but not just any Genesis -- early post-Peter Gabriel Genesis...you know, Abacab, the self-titled one with the shapes..." "That's not early, that's late period, maybe mid-period. Early would be Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering and Seconds Out..."

Anyway, we never went out, not that I had a chance in L of that anyway...

I'll get everyone covered. Bret, if your still at the same joint I should have your address on file too. Good thing you logged on since I've been meaning to purge some of these names. I have several that I have no idea at all who they even are.

Reading the comments my dinner conversation really must have ended up with me coming off as the dreaded indiehipsterelitist snob which of course I'm anything but. Never been too enthralled with much that's mainstream but of course there are numerous exceptions to this general rule. Think that this will be the foundation for my response next time it comes up. I just prefer to explore a little more and take paths a little less traveled.

John Cougar Mellencamp is how it's spelled but it's actually pronounced John Cougar Menstrual-cramp.

    Now you know

Neither of us have the time to deal with that list. On the plus side, just thinking about the time and money I've saved by skipping over those and related bands makes my heart smile.

Haven't rec'd your vital statistics yet so PM with your name and address and I'll send it off. If you haven't figured it out yet-this is the best internet site devoted to music a geek could ever hope to stumble upon. I'd be happy to throw a comp your way.

    Hi Jim....

My first post here at rave rec (very few posts overall), and would love to check out your compilation. I've only heard of or listened to a few of the selections you listed, but am interested in expanding my horizons. A little about me (if anyone's interested)...I recently had leg surgery as the result of a long ago motorcycle accident, infection, etc and am spending a great deal of time at home recuperating and with crap on tv for the most part, I am listening to much more music (not a bad thing). It's a pity I didn't find time before to listen to all of the great music out there, but as they say, every cloud has a silver lining. I pretty much listened to the music of my younger days ie The Stones, The Who, Zep, CSNY,Simon and Garfunkel(yep), you get the idea, and ignored the majority of new(er) music. Now with more home time, some friends of mine have introduced me to some music I probably would have never listened to prior to my accident (The Wrens, The Strokes, etc) and find that I really enjoy the music. Anyway, if you would be so kind as to send me a copy of your disc, I would be very grateful. Thanks....Jack
PS...The above bio was not meant to elicit pity but to let you know how/why I came to this forum. And for what it's worth, I like Petty, and will listen to Journey, Elton, Mellencamp, etc in small doses if I'm feeling nostalgic. Thanks again.

Have a ball here-I do. Sent you the PM. FWIW, you can pretty safely PM anyone on the board. If they don't want it-it's set up to be blocked.

Reminds me that I never picked up that Strummer cd. Another stop at Big B's on the way home from work today.

I probably have enough recent stuff to throw another sampler together, if I can carve out any free time beyond these 60-70 hr work-weeks.

The Joe Strummer is very, very good. Of course it couldn't come home alone- also picked up Handsome Family's Live At Schuba's Tavern (excellent), Modest Mouse's new release on vinyl, and NMH's On Avery Island, also on vinyl.
