Anyone heard of Luke Doucet?

He's my latest discovery and boy is he good! Just kidding. No, he is good, but ForeverAutumn's discovery. Or was it opt80? I don't know, but FA turned me on to his latest, which garnered top honors on her best of the year list, and I've been spinning it a few times in the last couple days and it is a good one. She'd probably give me the evil eye for saying this because I know she had a bad experience with him before, but he reminds me a bit of that other great Canadian troubadoor, Ron Sexsmith, but with maybe some Ed Harcourt (and now tentoze is giving me the evil eye) and Andrew Bird (and now audiobill is giving me the evil eye) mixed in. Really nice combo. Not quite as eclectic as Bird, nor as experimental as Harcourt when he was working with Dave Fridmann on his great debut, Here Be Monsters, but not far away either. Maybe a little like that Richard Davies Telegraph album I also love with the occasional chamber pop flourishes. Did you ever warm up to that one, FA? Lots of late period Beatlesy sound, but some roots rock too. The guy is really all over the place including some mariachi stuff on one song that sounds a bit like Calexico, but somehow it all sounds cohesive and singular.

Anyway, still got a lot of exploring to do on this one, but like it a lot already. Pretty nice recording too. Thanks Forever!

Hey Davey, I'm really glad that you're enjoying Luke. I had a feeling that you'd dig it. It just gets better and better with every spin IMO.

Opt80 suggested that I give Luke a go after I mentioned my love of Colin James' music. The two are totally different and I'm not sure where Alan sees the connection, but I'm glad that he mentioned Luke to me anyway.

I'm still listening to this disk on an almost daily basis (yup, listened to it today). Luke is playing a free show at our WinterCity Festival on Sunday. We're planning on being there unless the weather takes a bad turn. It's an outside show, which in Toronto in February could be brutal. But since we've had a record breaking warm winter so far, I'm hopeful for Sunday's show.

Did you send me that Richard Davies disk or was I supposed to buy it? I'm not asking that like a sarcastic hint. Seriously, I remember you sending me something with your CRS disk, but I can't remember what it was. The name is familiar though. Was that it? I'll have to dig through my stacks if it was. I did listen to whatever it was you sent me and I did like it, but somehow it's gotten buried and forgotten. The old "too much music too little time" problem. Of course if I stopped listening to Andrew Bird and Luke Doucet every day that'd free up some time for other music.

Hubby wasn't a big fan of the pornography. I've heard rumours of a free pornography show this spring. But it'll probably be one of those things where you have to win tickets by listening to the radio...it's just not worth it.

I just had to post the gorgeous lyrics. Does she write her own stuff?

Yeah, mostly. On that excellent Blacklisted album I think it was all her stuff except for two covers. I love that album. She has said that song was inspired by her memories of being a vulnerable young woman in the Seattle area while the Green River Killer was at large in the 80s.

Just getting around to spinning this latest Luke.

I'm liking it right away on first listen. Very straight forward folk rock stuff in 4/4 time. Nice voice, nice layered production. Nice "heard it before somewhere" melodies.

I like that there is lots of variety in the song writing, this song sounds like a Tom Waits song, this one Josh Rouse, this one Freedy Johston, this one Ben Folds if he played guitar.

Just smart down-home singer-songwriter stuff about love, relations, and drinking. Very nice on first listen (oow, he just sang the F-word, he must be a real artist).

last Saturday night. I think it was on PBS or the HDTV channel...or maybe it was ACL, and I don't mean anterior cruciate ligament. He had a full orchestra and all backing him, and it was qute nice, along with the bottle of St. Francis Old Vine Zin I was in the midst of polishing off. Alcohol always seems to enhance the musical experience...not to mention the sheer strenght and intelligence that it also gives me. Go ahead, try to debate me on any subject, or pick a fight with me I've been a drinkin' and you'll find out exactly what I mean. Say it loud, say it plowed.
