    AF -- The Suburbs

    I'm one spin in, and this thing is farking amazing. Me likey, lots.

    Can't wait to see them this weekend. I have a feeling it's going to be one of those epic shows that I'll remember till I... can't.

    ...I'll be seeing them before you! Ha! Friday night baby, with Spoon opening.

    That's the 3rd time I'll see Spoon, and I'll be seeing them a 4th time on 9/11. Heck, we're practically family.

    I do like the new CD very much, and Slosh is right; it's much better than Neon Bible.
    I call my bathroom Jim instead of John so I can tell people that I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

    If you say the word 'gullible' very slowly it sounds just like oranges.

    How were the Walkmen, btw? I have a choice of seeing them or The Ettes or The Constellations in that time-slot, and I don't really know that much about any of them. But so far, I've liked what I've heard from Walkmen.

    7.99 at Target stores this week. Not that I'd balk at paying whatever for an album this great. Plus - 16 tracks! Talk about getting your moneys worth. It outlasted me on my treadmill workout although to be fair, that's getting easier and easier for a band to do.

    "Ready to Start" is in the running for track of the year. Don't recall any slouches yet but so far that's the standout for me.

    You two have fun at your shows.

    "Ready to Start" has received considerable airplay here for the past couple of weeks, so I already knew I liked that one. But I was pleasantly surprised by the consistently good songs, one after another. Tracks 4-5-6 are all excellent (especially "City with No Children"), and track 15 ("Sprawl II") might be the best on the album for me.

    This disc is a nearly certain top 10 pick for me, and a strong contender overall.

    (And thanks, man... this weekend is usually one of the highlights of my year!)

    The Walkmen opened for Spoon the first time I saw them...

    ...back in April of '09 at the Electric Factory in Philly. They did a nice job and rocked pretty hard. All in all they were among the best opening acts I've seen in quite some time. You knew I was joking about those other bands you're going to see, right?

    As far as awesome opening bands, the best might have been Wild Turkey. They opened for Jethro Tull back in 1972 I believe. Glenn Cornick, who was the former bassist for Tull, left to form Wild Turkey. They were outstanding.

    so, what the opinions on Yeasayer and Rogue Wave? I have the new The National (I like it OK) and the new New Pornographers (which is somewhat lacking for me).

    Sadly, Permalight sucks. Electro-twee garbage. Hard to believe this is the same band that gave us Descended Like Vultures and Out Of The Shadow. I suppose I should have seen the writing on the wall with the disappointing Asleep At Heaven's Gate, but at least there were a couple of choice tunes on that one. Luckily I got to hear Permalight before wasting any money on it.

    One of the very few consolations of being a sarcastic douche is having the ability to recognize the trait in others.

    Yeah, the Walkmen sound like exactly the sort of straight-up, solid rocking act that really sets the right tone in the early afternoon of one of those all-day marathons. Gotta build that momentum-mojo, ya know...
