    Nashville or Memphis...and why.

We're considering a short vacation to one of these cities next spring, and I'm curious if any of you have been to either city. If so, I'd like to hear your impressions of your visit and which you would choose.

I have some reservations about Memphis because it has a bad reputation for violent crime, at least in some areas of the city. That alone could keep me away, but I'm sure Beale Street is relatively safe.

I'm leaning toward Nashville. I'm not a big 'country' music fan, but love many of it's sub-genres (alt-country, rockabilly, honky tonk) and think it would be a great place to hang for a few days.

    Danke,

I call my bathroom Jim instead of John so I can tell people that I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

Memephis is alright but you probably enjoy Nashville better if you are a country fan. Ofcourse memphis got Elvis Presely's Graceland which I been to couple of times.

Well, yeah, there is Graceland, but I'm looking for comments regarding music venues (nightclubs mostly) as well as the restaurants and general vibe of the city.

With regards to restaurants, Diners, Drive Ins and Dives has featured 11 such stops in Memphis and only 4 in Nashville. We kinda like checking these places out as we cruise around.

I had written a great and detailed review of both cities for you (I live near) but this website is such a piece of trash, it got lost upon submission............here is the bottom line :
Memphis was then; Nashville is now.
Both have a lot to see.
I'd go to both, but if I had to choose just one, it would be Nashville.

Memphis has Sun Records, Stax records, Beale Street,Graceland and lots of great BBQ. It's the traditionial birthplace of Rock and Roll. Also, lotsa scary neighborhoods and opressive heat and skeeters in the summer.

Nashville has less BBQ but a is a much more pleasant place to bring the family. Last time we were there we went to the Ryman auditorium is a must see. I understand it was since flooded but I understand it's been restored. It was so steeped in history you could slice it with a knife. Also, The Loveless Cafe just south makes the best fried chicken abd buttermilk biscuits I've ever had.

But, over both, I'd say do Austin given the opportunity.

Memphis also has the Tunica gambling casinos close by on the river. Not my thing, but a lot of people like it. I think Nashville is much more pleasing to the eye and as mentioned before, more family friendly. Memphis always looked dirty to me. I've been to Graceland. It's cool to see once, but once you've seen it, you've seen it. I do like the barbecue though.
