The official but silly Friday Song of the Day thread

Or FSOD as FA might say, but as someone who works in the aerospace industry, I get so tired of constantly hearing acronyms and having to ask or look up what they mean that I'll stick with the long version

Anyway, I've got Concrete Blonde Mexican Moon playing right now and trying to decide if I wanna go with the English or Spanish version of the title track. Either way it would be a fine soundtrack for my Friday and pave the way for my weekend. What a great song, especially with those occasional fake castanets that come with a big splash of reverb. The song lopes along at such a relaxing pace, just ropes me in and pulls me along. My favorite of many great songs from Johnette and the boys. On the third repeat of the Spanish version, Bajo la Lune Mexicana, that close to CD right now and if I didn't have to go....well, I probably wouldn't stop.

Ya know, I was just thinking we should put together a best of the Friday Song of the Day threads comp. Now that would be some hot shit!

I guess then, that would be Forever Autumn to you.

I picked up five new CDs yesterday, so I'm going to defer picking a SOTD until I've had a chance to review a few of these goodies.

I've been enamored with Pinback's stellar Blue Screen Life album for the past few weeks. Difficult to pick a standout track since they're all very, very good but since you're putting me on the spot (and since it's currently playing) I'll go with "Seville"

    gonna kill us all

    oh Sheena kneels
    and prays over the graves
and wishes of her god to
    be so brave

    the roses she had picked
    fall from her hand
    onto the ground which
    will soon hold her
    Sheena Bella
    Sheena Bella walks
    and Sheena Bella strays

    Oh, fetal Sheena counts off
    her last days
    the colors of the grass
    the shadows on the floor
    the precious things that she
    had no time for

she was only 4 years old
she was barely 4 years old

    they're gonna kill us all

Hmmm, pretty dark lyrics for such upbeat sounding music

I finally got Lori Carsons "The Finest Thing"

and the title track The Finest Thing is an absolutely gorgeous love song. I hate when an album starts with a song that's head-n-shoulders above anything else on it, quite a letdown. Of the remaining 7 tracks. at least 3 are long instrumentals...(instrumentals?) from a woman with a voice like Lori's??!! Sacriledge!

oh well, that first song does make me swoon though

In the spirit of silliness, I would like to submit the song "Cattle Prod" from Guadalcanal Diary's Jamboree album. It is, for my money, the rockingest and mostest funnest song ever recorded about the pleasures of bestiality.

There's a certain kinda lovin' that my wife don't know
Flesh so tender it just falls off the bone
When I raise my hand I see them cattle shake
Gotta have a heapin' helpin' of that sweet flank steak
    I got a cattle prod!
    I got a cattle prod!

Well, trust me...it's better with the crunchy cowpunk guitar riffs.

Touche, with one of those funny little lines above the 'e' that this site won't let me use anymore. But FA is really what I'd call a nickname, not an acronym. Acronyms aren't for people, silly girl

Well, except for describing them, like our own IHES (indie hipster elistist snob for you noobs). Hey, you know it's not proper etiquette to reply to a Friday Song of the Day thread only to say that you'll have one later. What kind of deal is that? Isn't there anything going on in your head right now? Hehehe, I mean musically?

Well, Take This Job And Shove It does come to mind.

Alright, if you're going to make me pick one off the top of my head, I'll have to go with No One Knows by the Queens of the Stoneage (see how I didn't just type QOTSA? ). Haven't been able to get that opening riff out of my head since Duds post a few days ago. Then as I was driving home from work yesterday, I flipped on the radio and it was playing. Man, did I ever crank that one up! I LOVE that song!!!

I was hoping to come up with something a little more original than that but..you asked.

That is a great single. I remember when it was getting a lot of radio play and I was driving around one day with it cranked and it suddenly dawned on me how much it sounds like vintage ZZ Top. Pretty cool

I remember putting it on my 2002 YEC (and not really liking it that much to begin with but I didn't get all that many new releases in '02) and then like a year later hearing it about a billion times via my co-workers' radios. I hate that fucking riff now

NP: Death Cab For Cutie - The Photo Album (because my kid likes it and asked me to transfer the LP to CD-R, which I've been meaning to do for several years now anyway).

    Sugar Hiccup on Cherios

Ok, I really don't know what Liz is singing here, but I'm having a nice time listening to HEAD OVER HEELS by the Cocteau Twins. Kind of swooshy wooshy in that early 80's 4ad way.. but still delicious...

    An oldie, but a goodie...

    I went through a bit of a Pogues nostalgia kick this week and ever since I can't seem to stop hearing Fairytale of New York from playing in my head. When Christy MacColl belts out the line;
You scumbag You maggot, You cheap lousy f*ggot, Happy Christmas yer arse, I pray God it's our last",
    and it immediately moves into that glorious chorus;
And the boys in the NYPD choir were singing "Galway Bay", and the bells were ringing out for Christmas Day..I mean, what's better than that?

I keep typing things about IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD, but then erasing it because it's so hard to put into words. Just a perfect perfect album.

I think you put it into words just perfectly.

Here's a little gem from that honky tonk off the main road where rednecks crack pool cues over heads as their Daisy Mae girlfriends try to make them jealous:

(Think slow country shuffle and plaintive slide guitar)
    8 weeks, 8 weeks in a barroom
8 weeks with my head hangin' low
    Drinkin', thinkin' of my darlin'
    Will somebody tell me,
    Where did she go?

The light around the juke box is gettin' dimmer
The stool won't be still anymore
Oh how, oh how my head is achin'
Look at the snakes on the floor

    (Spoken)
Will someone please, please tell me
What are those weary, weary sounds?
    I hear lonesome dogs howlin'
    There's little devils
    Dancin' all around

    (Sung)
They've even took my name off my mailbox
There's other faces 'round my door
A great big car's parked in my driveway
    I can't park there anymore

    8 weeks, 8 weeks in a barroom
8 weeks with my head hangin' low
    Drinkin', thinkin' of my darlin'
    Will somebody tell me,
    Where did she go?

"8 Weeks in a Barroom", Ramblin' Red Bailey from God less America - Country & Western fer all ye Sinners 'n' Sufferers 1955-1966
    other tracks include:
    "Too Many Pills"
    "Please Don't Go Topless Mother"
"Rock & Roll Killed My Mother"
    "The Drunken Driver"
"The Devil, My Conscience & I"

Was listening to some vintage vinyl stuff earlier today -- Shriekback ("Faded Flowers", "This Big Hush", "Feelers") etc. -- but Godley and Creme, "Snack Attack" just sticks.

I feel like Kojak sitting in a cadillac
    I gotta eat
I gotta eat a flap jack stack
    rack
    a six-pack, Jack
    Just call me, 'Jack Kerouac'
    Click-clack, open up the hatchback
I could eat a bubble car
    Or a packamack
    (?)
    Patty-cake, patty-cake, Big Mac
Good God, it's a snack attack!...

Plus, it's got a killer Holger Czukay-esque bassline...

Speaking of Shriekback and funny songs. I've always got a hoot out of Gunning for the Buddha, based on the Zen adage, "if you see the Buddha on the street, kill him." My favorite verse, followed by chorus is:

    Now's the time
    to have some big ideas
    Now's the time
    to make some firm decisions
We saw the Buddha in a bar down south
    Talking politics and nuclear fission
We see him and he's all washed up--
Moving on into the body of a beetle
Getting ready for a long long crawl
    He aint' nothing--
    He ain't nothing at all

We're on the road and we're
    gunning for the Buddha
    We know his name and
    He mustn't get away
We're on the road and we're
    Gunning for the Buddha
    It would take one shot
    To blow him away

    Ed

Thanks. Now I'm going to have to go and pull out Big Night Music.

How many songs do you know that use the word "anacrusis"?

There's a bit of Henry Miller in old Barry Andrews, god bless'im. Cue up Running on the Rocks for me one time.
