    New Orleans music collection?
My niece is turning 14 this week (hard to believe!) and she's also going to the New Orleans Jazz Festival with her class this year. I thought that I would get her a CD of music by New Orleans local musicians to give her a taste of the music that she'll get to hear.

Can anyone make a recommendation? Preferably, it should be something available here, www.amazon.ca, and in stock. I need it by Saturday.

When we were in Chicago, the airport gift shops had CD compilations of various local Chicago blues legends. I'm hoping to find something similar from New Orleans.

    Thanks ad invance.

A two disk compilation, one labeled "City Disc", the other "Country Disc" at bargain basement price. This was released in 1995 so it may be a little out of touch with what is out there in New Orleans these days...but still a good place to start.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band is an institution and the class will most likely see them in action. Look for a best of, I seem to remember two or three.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band (one of their song is featured on the first one mentioned above) is still very active in New Orleans and so is Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Maria Muldaur and Zachary Richard. Zachary just released his first English singing recording, up to now he sang in "cajun" or Louisiana french. I heard some good things about it.

But I would look at the musical genre and not at the artists. Dixie jazz, Zydeco and down home acoustic blues all started in New Orleans...and so did R&B.

Oh!!!, the Marsalis brothers. Winston has always looked back at the root of New Orleans' music in most of his recordings. To see him jam live is to fall in love with jazz. Please do not forget the father, I forgot his name at this moment.

    Have fun looking.

Starbucks put together a collection for Mardi Gras. I bought her that one, so that you don't have to.

    Cool, Finchy. Thanks!

Unfortunately, none of those are easily available. Even the one guy who checked Amazon.ca, didn't seem to notice that they were all secondary sellers in the US. I don't think I'd get it here by Saturday.

I happen to have a comp made by former RR member...
...DLD. He gave it to me when we met him and his wife at the Jazz Fest back in '04. It will take some digging, but I'll give it a shot and send you a copy.

Galactic is also from NOLA and I have a live cd of their called 'We Love 'em Tonight' or something like that. Good stuff actually.

Thanks. It'll be cheaper from Amazon. Plus...Cosmo is dangerous territory.

(for those not in the know, Cosmo is an awesome musical instrument store. It's where I go to cheat on my guitar. :))

....And while you're at it, the soundtrack to The Big Easy is a great collection of topical music, New Orleans style. With selections from Buckwheat Zydeco, Daniel Lanois, Fess and others, this soundtrack is a great introduction to not only New Orleans music, but the music of Cajun Country which could use a little more attention...

Even so, every New Orleans collection needs Fess:

    Hope this helps!

This is a pretty good list right here. Cept I'd add some more works by the master singer songwriter Alan Toussaint. And perhaps a leetle classic Zydeco from Queen Ida or CJ Chenier (who I've had the honor of performing with and recording with).
