    Question Most moving String Quartet

The title says it all. Which string quartet has been the most moving experience for the listeners out there?? I've just started listening to some of Shostakovich's quartets and they are very dark, deep, and brooding but wonderful.

Offhand, I'd have to say Schubert, "Death and the Maiden"

I'd say that's a good choice, Schubert's Quartet No. 14. No. 13 is nice, too. Quartetto Italiano on Philips.

I am quite fond of Dvorak's American Quartet, No. 12, especially the slow movement which is very beautiful. The Vlach Qt. on Naxos are excellent.

I like the Debussy Quartet quite a lot, and with the Quartetto Italiano, the Ravel Qt. comes off nicely, too.
