    Most influential vocalists....

Ok, so make your list of 10 vocalists that you feel have been the most influential on the world of music, mine are in no particular order:

    1. Elvis Presley
    2. David Bowie
    3. Freddy Mercury
    4. Roy Orbison
    5. Robert Plant
    6. Aretha Franklin
    7. Dionne Warwick
    8. Michael Jackson
    9. Bjork
    10. Thom York

This is so hard, especially when thinking male and female.

yeah, it's hard not repeating what's already been said. I'll try to add some new ones:

    Hank Williams
    Patsy Cline
    Otis Redding
    Frank Sinatra
    Peggy Lee
    Brian Wilson
    Janis Joplin
    Robert Plant
    Elvis Presley
    Louis Armstrong

hate leavin' off Aretha, Dylan, Lennon, etc. *Buck Owens as honorable mention for being elder statesman for the Bakersfield sound.

I wish I was more familiar with opera. Maybe someone cultured will chime in.

Andrew Eldritch? Sisters of Mercy? Haha...interesting choice. I would definitely vote Vision Thing as the most under rated party album going.

    great lists!!!!!!

I almost wonder if I should have re-defined the list as a top 10 male and female and even perhaps divide by genre to a degree. Although I thought about that several times, and while I do think that world music and things like opera are influential, I don't think there are too many vocalists (no matter how great they are) that end up influencing more people than rock and roll singers.

Oh, but I beg to differ, mon frere!

Since you didn't mention genre, I'll pull up this list for your consideration (in no particular order):

    Enrico Caruso
    Fairuz (Nouhad Wadi Haddad)
    Roy Orbison
    Nina Simone
    Bob Dylan
    Bob Marley
    Luciano Pavarotti
    Freddie Mercury
    John Lennon*
    Edith Piaf

    *He came up heads
    **Special mention to Elton John

Edith Piaf was on my initial list.

I must agree with 3,6 and 9. She is as beautiful as her voice.

Spent some part of this morning listening to AN....What a voice....what a mujer!

Rarely since Leontyne Price have I seen the likes of AN, who not only charms her listeners with honeyed vocals, but beguiles them with the beauty of her exquisite form....Rowr....

If we're truly talking influential, for better or worse, and not just what we like best, that's a great list. When I saw the word "influential" Whitney Houston and Michael Stipe came to mind. Like them or not, each has had quite an influence...not like luvtolisten's top 10, but still noteworthy.

Thanks noob. It is hard to limit it to just 10, and not include names like Woody Guthie, Smokey Robinson,Willie Nelson, James Brown, Brenda Lee, David Ruffin, etc.
