The most heartbreaking guitar solos into prog / rock?
Two wonderful prog songs come immediately to mind at the moment:

=> Death of Ra, by JADE WARRIOR (from the album "Way of the Sun")

=> Ice, by CAMEL (from the album "I Can See Your House from Here")

Which others would you also mention here?

Two by David Gilmour spring instantly to mind; "Time" and "Comfortably Numb".

There's several layers of bittersweet built into the solo that ends Dire Straits' "Tunnel of Love".

    J. Macis's solo on Dino Jr.'s "Get Me" cuts to the bone, also.

    [edit]
I'm going to leave this post as-is. But for the record, I originally read "prog / rock" to mean "prog OR rock". Hence the presence of J. Macis in my post. And, arguably, Mark Knopfler as well.

I like the second solo in Camel's Lady Fantasy. Evidently, it has some deep personal meaning to Andy Latimer, who is overcome by emotion around the 5m30s mark of this '80s something performance.

Here's Camel - Ice, live (in Brazil I believe):

Speaking of Camel, After All These Years on the After The Storm prog compilation is outstanding. Apparently it was on the Japanese release of Nod & A Wink.

Also, the demo titled Regal DIvers from the bonus disk of the Flower King's Unfold the Future.

I always loved Steve Howe's guitar solo in Sound Chaser by Yes from the Relayer album.

    Can I play too?
Sorta proggy I guess. This one rips and starts right at the start of the song.

    What do I win?

Howe would have a few. His playing on Ritual. His solo at the end of To Be Over.

No it wasn't. Perhaps you're thinking of "The Sage". If so, good call.

    yourself.

First of all, that mediafire site is about as counterintuitive and advertising laden as possible. What a confusing mess. I think yousendit.com has a similar feature and it's much easier to use.

And how is that Scorpions solo "heartbreaking" exactly?

Mebbe veering slightly off-topic, but when I think of Prog and "heartbreaking" I'm thinking total package...

    Call me a traditionalist...
(aka: old) but one of the most evocative solos in rock was Eric Clapton's in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". If that doesn't sound like instrumental crying, I don't know what does.

I know that this is not "prog rock" by today's yardstick, but it was for the time

    Lost in translation?

It has always been a favorite of mine. I just chose to ignore the heartbreaking part (and the prog part too :D)

Roy, feel free to list whatever you want. In fact, when I said "into prog / rock" I meant "into prog AND rock".

    Cheers,

A few more highly emotive guitar solos that come to mind at the moment:

=> Chris Rea, on "Where the Blues Come From" (from The Road to Hell & Back DVD)

=> Mark Knopfler, on "Local Hero / Wild Theme" (from Dire Straits' On the Night DVD)

=> Gary Moore, on "Trouble at Home" & "Parisienne Walkways"

=> Toshihiro Tanaka, on "Firefly" (from Bellaphon's Firefly)
