Doh!
Man, you ladies play mean!
-
Looks like FA plays meaner than SB. She's been here longer though and knows more of the tricks. :sosp:
-
Bright light almost blinding, black night still there shining,
I can't stop, keep on climbing, looking for what I knew.
Had a friend, she once told me, "You got love, you ain't lonely,"
Now she's gone and left me only looking for what I knew.
Mmm, I'm telling you now, The greatest thing you ever can do now,
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now, It's very easy just...
Met a man on the roadside crying, without a friend, there's no denying,
You're incomplete, they'll be no finding looking for what you knew.
So anytime somebody needs you, don't let them down, although it grieves you,
Some day you'll need someone like they do, looking for what you knew.
Mmm, I'm telling you now, The greatest thing you ever can do now,
Is trade a smile with someone who's blue now, It's very easy just...
-
Then as it was, then again it will be
An' though the course may change sometimes
Rivers always reach the sea
Blind stars of fortune, each have several rays
On the wings of maybe, down in birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn't have to grow
But as the eagle leaves the nest, it's got so far to go
Changes fill my time, baby, that's alright with me
In the midst I think of you, and how it used to be
Did you ever really need somebody, And really need 'em bad
Did you ever really want somebody, The best love you ever had
Do you ever remember me, baby, did it feel so good
'Cause it was just the first time, And you knew you would
Through the eyes an' I sparkle, Senses growing keen
Taste your love along the way, See your feathers preen
Kind of makes makes me feel sometimes, Didn't have to grow
We are eagles of one nest, The nest is in our soul
Vixen in my dreams, with great surprise to me
Never thought I'd see your face the way it used to be
Oh darlin', oh darlin'
I'm never gonna leave you. I never gonna leave
Holdin' on, ten years gone
Ten years gone, holdin' on, ten years gone
-
This one's for FA...
The snakes and arrows a child is heir to
Are enough to leave a thousand cuts
We build our defenses, a place of safety
And leave the darker places unexplored
Sometimes the fortress is too strong
Or the love is too weak
What should have been our armor
Becomes a sharp and angry sword
Our better natures seek elevation
A refuge for the coming night
No one gets to their heaven without a fight
We hold beliefs as a consolation
A way to take us out of ourselves
Meditation or medication
A comfort ,or a promised reward
Sometimes the spirit is too strong
Or the flesh is too weak
Sometimes the need is just too great
For the solace we seek
The suit of shining armor
Becomes a keen and bloody sword
No one gets to their heaven without a fight
A refuge for the coming night
A future of eternal light
No one gets to their heaven without a fight
Confused alarms of struggle and flight
Blood is drained of color
By the flashes of artillery light
No one gets to their heaven without a fight
The battle flags are flown
At the feet of a god unknown
No one gets to their heaven without a fight
Sometimes the damage is too great
Or the will is too weak
What should have been our armor
Becomes a sharp and burning sword

Or you can do this...

While that may work, it's not how I did it. Type the word then change the colour of one letter to black. I know it's already black, but for some reason editing the colour works.

Nice. Not their best lyrics IMO, but still...nice. :yesnod:
-
Maybe not, but when you put their music behind it, you'd be hard pressed to find a better song in their repertiore, IMO.

Hey now, little speedyhead,
The read on the speedmeter says
You have to go to task in the city
Where people drown and people serve.
Don’t be shy. Your just deserve
Is only just light years to go.
Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
Ocean storm, bayberry moon.
I have got to leave to find my way.
Watch the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
The ocean is the river’s goal,
A need to leave the water knows
We’re closer now than light years to go.
I have got to find the river,
Bergamot and vetiver
Run through my head and fall away.
Leave the road and memorize
This life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
There’s no one left to take the lead,
But I tell you and you can see
We’re closer now than light years to go.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
Fall into the ocean.
The river to the ocean goes,
Afortune for the undertow.
None of this is going my way.
There is nothing left to throw
Of Ginger, lemon, indigo,
Coriander stem and rose of hay.
Strength and courage overrides
The privileged and weary eyes
Of river poet search naivete.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
All of this is coming your way.

To Brian
From bad luck I'm walking away
I'm not getting stuck
I'm not gonna stay
To good things I'm moving ahead
I'm tired of dying
I'm living instead
Once in a while I wake up
Wondering why we gave up
But once in a while
Comes and fades away
The sun's up and lighting the sky
I never could see it
It just passed me by
Good things keep moving along
I'm not looking backward
For something that's gone
Once in a while I'll wake up
Wondering why we gave up
But once in a while
Comes and fades away
I don't know what love is
I'm selfish and lazy
And when I get scared I can act like I'm crazy
But when I think of your kisses,
I'm still gonna smile
I'm still gonna miss you
Once in a while
Once in a while
Once in a while I'll wake up
Wondering why we gave up
But once in a while
Comes and it fades away
Good things keep moving ahead
I'm tired of dying I'm living instead

You run yourself ragged tryin' to be strong
You feel bad when you done nothin' wrong
Love got all confused with anger and pride
So much abuse on such a little child
Someone you trusted told you to shutup
Now there's a pain in your gut
that you can't get rid of
No one heard your screams when you were nine
When bad dreams filled your summertime
So you don't always show your sweet side....
You're tough as steel and you keep your chin up
You don't ever feel like you're good enough
You've had the blues ever since you were six
Your little tennis shoes and your pick-up sticks
You were screamed at and kicked over and over
Now you always feel sick
and you can't keep a lover
Every Christmas and there were presents to unwrap
But the things you witnessed
when you were five and a half
So you don't always show your sweet side....
Someone deserted you, the damage is done
Now you don't deserve to be loved by no one
Hands that would feed you, when you were two
Were the same hands that beat you
black and blue
You get deffensive at every turn
You're overly sensitive and overly concerned
Few precious memories no lullabies
Hollowed out centuries of lies
So you don't always show your sweet side....
I've seen you in the kitchen cookin' me supper
I listened to your b!tchin'
and I watched you suffer
I still love you baby 'cause I know you
Don't mean to do the cruel things you do
I've seen you sewing buttons on your shirt
I've seen you throwing up when your
stomach hurt
I'll stick by you baby through thick and thin
No matter what kind of shape you're in
Cause I - I - I - I - I -I've seen your sweet side....
I - I - I - I - I - I - I've seen your sweet side....

Well, as you know Edwards is one of my favorites, but as Swish Daddy hinted at earlier, most pop music lyrics are kind of clunky without the music and the vocal. I love those strange and twisted lyrics that people like Tim Rutili of Califone/Red Red Meat come up with, but they really don't make much sense beyond a few lines, which is one of the things I kinda like too. That's a good record, though. There wasn't really anyone like them. Still isn't I guess, except for Edwards own Woven Hand (and I think there was a "beautiful the axe that flies at me" thread back aways by someone around here :)). The one after Sackcloth is even better, probably the best for their own music. One of the songs "Dead Run" wound up on the Decade of Alt-Country comp we did around here all those years ago (2001). But Folklore is probably my favorite 16hp related album overall, hard to top the feel that one has. That and Blush Music, and yea I guess probably Mosaic. And that Lilium record is pretty nice too, but it only has one Edwards spot.

Simple: If I want moody/weird I go to Davey, if I want really Texarcana/moody/weird I go to Troy, and for everything else I just buy albums purely for the cover art.
(I'm sure somewhere in there is a Finch Platte reference but at this hour it's beyond me)

Agreed, not only because most of the time it's the music that is, and should be, properly evocative of the desired mood but lyrics that are too on the nose become borderline poetry and open the artist up to all kinds of criticism vis-à-vis overt pomp and circumstance...
par exemple:
A ghost of a mist was on the field
The grey and the green together
The noise of a distant farm machine
Out of the first light came
A tattered necklace of hedge end trees
On the southern side of the hill
Betrays where the border runs between
Where Mary Dunoon's boy fell
Easter here again, a time for the blind to see
Easter, surely now can all of your hearts be free
Out of the port of Liverpool
Bound for the North of Ireland
The wash of the spray and horsetail waves
The roll of the sea below
And Easter here again, a time for the blind to see
Easter, surely now can all of your hearts be free
What will you do?
Make a stone of your heart?
Will you set things right?
When you tear them apart?
Will you sleep at night?
With the plough and the stars alight?
What will you do?
With the wire and the gun?
That'll set things right
When it's said and done?
Will you sleep at night?
Is there so much love to hide?
Forgive, Forget
Sing "Never again."

Well there ya go. With the wave of a horsetail, you found the missing link between Marillion and Wovenhand. Well done, my clever, yet sometimes moody/weird buddy :)
He come up and
throw himself down
he finds no strength to get off this ground
by the wave of the horsetail

In our days we will live like our ghosts will live
pitching glass at the cornfield crows and folding clothes
Like stubborn boys across the road, we’ll keep everything
Grandma’s gun and the black bear claw that took her dog
And when sister Lowery says “Amen,” we won’t hear anything
The ten-car train will take that word, that fledgling bird
and the fallen house across the way, it’ll keep everything
the baby’s breath, our bravery wasted and our shame
And we’ll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Both our tender bellies wound in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern
In our days, we will say what our ghosts will say
“We gave the world what it saw fit, and what’d we get?”
Like stubborn boys with big green eyes, we’ll see everything
in the timid shade of the autumn leaves and the buzzard’s wing
Then we’ll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Our tender bellies all wound around in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern

Long before song before song blues
Babbette baboon abba zaba zoom
Two shadows at Noon, Babbette baboon
Comin' over pretty soon, Babbette baboon
Run, run, catch her soon, draft of dawn, sunshine on Babbette baboon
Mother say son, she say son, you can't lose, with the stuff you use
Abba Zaba go-zoom Babbette baboon
Run, run, monsoon, Indian dream, tiger moon
Yellow bird fly high, tabacco sky, two shadows at Noon
Babbette baboon gonna catch her soon Babbette baboon
Song before song before song blues
Babbette baboon abba zaba zoom
Two shadows at noon, abba zaba zoom
Gonna zaba her soon Babbette baboon abba zaba zoom
Gonna catch her soon

My home is on a dirt road with fields on two sides.
I see the fallen house across the way everyday.
I've seen Grandma shoot and kill a rattlesnake.
I know the Lowerys.
I can see the tracks. I hear the train at least 8 times a day.
I've heard stories about the black bears just below the state line in NW FL.
I grew up with the stubborn boys across the road.
I often see the buzzards on the rural routes between my home and office.
I've been hooked on that song since picking up the album.

How bout' this cheery little ditty...
I try to make it through my life
In my way
There is you
I try to make it through these lies
And that’s all I do
Just don't deny it
Don’t try to fight this
And deal with it
And that’s just part of it
You tried to break me
You wanna break me
Bit by bit
That’s just part of you
If you were dead or still alive,
I don't care,
I don't care,
And all the things you left behind,
Cause I swear,
I don't care
I try to make you see my side
I always try to stay in line
But you’re eyes see right through
That’s all they do
I’m getting buried in this place
I got no room, your in my face
Don’t say anything, just go away
But if you wanted me just deal with it
So...
If you were dead or still alive,
I don't care,
I don't care,
Just go and leave this all behind,
Casue I swear (I swear)
I don't care
(I never cared about, I never cared about)
I’m changing everything,
You won’t be there for me.
I’m changing everything,
You won’t be there for me.
If you were dead or still alive,
I don't care,
I don't care,
Just go and leave this all behind,
Cause I swear (I swear)
I don't care
If you were dead or still alive,
I don't care,
I don't care,
Just go and leave this all behind,
I swear I don’t care,
I don't care
at all…
