The long-awaited return of Tunesday Tuesday!

Bad day in history. Six years later, and the devil is still smiling. Sad day.

But it is Tunesday, so here goes anyway. Working swings for the last few months does give me the opportunity to spin a lot of tunes again, but not much else good to say about it other than the extra 6%.

Richard Buckner's great Devotion + Doubt playing right now, just started the incredible "A Goodbye Rye", big favorite, guitar burner with Marc Ribot's inspired Telecaster driving it to the good place, and Lloyd Maines' weepy pedal steel adding to the emotional atmosphere, and John Convertino giving it all those percussive textures he's so good at.

Brainiac - Electro-Shock For President
Slipped this little 6-song EP in yesterday for a few spins to follow the little Enon/Skeleton-Key discussion. The final Brainiac record, Jim O'Rourke twiddling the knobs, major label deal in the pocket, working on a new full length for Interscope, big money and good times ahead ... instead tragedy when Tim Taylor is killed in a car crash, the band and record effectively dying with him. Guitarist John Schmersal went on to form Enon with two guys from Skeleton Key, and took a lot of this sound with him. But as much as I love what Enon has gone on to do, this and the previous LP were the true vision of a freaky modern day Moog-enhanced new wave sound.

Brainiac - Hissing Prigs in Static Couture
see above .. still hard to believe these guys snagged a major label deal in '97 based on this when you hear how safe popular music has become in the last 10 years .... nice article from a coupla years ago here

Lift To Experience - The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads
Showed up in a thread of its own, but quite a record. Stretched out a bit over 80 minutes and 2 CDs, probably a little self indulgent, yea I guess, but still seems to go by quickly.

Red Red Meat - Jimmywine Majestic
The last one before they started going in a more exploratory direction, this one has more of the Stones guitar boogie sound, less avant-garde noise. I like the later ones like "There's A Star Above the Manger Tonight" because of those added textures, but this one is still great and has some of their best songs. Guitarist Glenn Girard left after this because of the direction they were headed on my favorite RRM record, "Bunny Gets Paid".

Shearwater - Palo Santo
Amazing record from last year, given the deluxe 2-CD treatment this year with their signing to big indie Matador.

Josh Ritter - Historical Conquests
There's a thread on down the page with a few of us talking about this latest one from one of the best songwriters around today. Right up there close to album of the year so far for some of us.

It's a good thing that there aren't any normal people here then.

I love my new job, but I'm not on the road anymore which means less time in my car and, therefore, less listening time. I do miss those long drives to northern Ontario where I could set up a kick-ass playlist and just put my ears and vehicle on cruise control for a few loud hours.

Much better than my image of this day. Always hope for the kids to grow up without the hate. Always hope that by the time she's 10 we'll be out of that hellhole. I heard Blur is supposed to be getting back together, not likely to be Modern Rubbish anymore, though. Think those days have left the building, at least for Blur, but Coxon and Albarn are supposed to be back together.

The National - Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers Just got this one, why it took me so long is a tough question to answer. The National is by my account, the best band out there right now. Need to drum up the first one very soon.

You Say Party! We Say Die! - Pretty cool little album with traces of 80's influence (think b-52's) with a really cool dark carnival, kind of campy, almost dark surf kind of vibe. Not album of the year, but pretty fun in a demented kind of way.

Against Me! LIke the first track, the rest hasn't really grown on me too much yet but in fairness I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet.

Siouxsie Sioux - Mantaray Got a preview copy of this. What can I say. God love Siouxsie Sioux but for the love of everything holy, could someone please stop her from releasing more lame albums? *reference The Seven Year Itch. Bummer. Find your edge again, please. You aren't Annie Lennox for crying out loud.

Sea Bear - Kind of like a more electrified Iron and Wine. I'm not a big Iron and Wine fan but this disc has it's moments.

The Early November - Mother, Mechanic and the Path
A slightly self indulgent triple CD but in amongst it there's some really good stuff both acoustic and electric. Kudos to the band though for taking a royalty cut to keep the price down, but I bought mine 2nd hand anyway. Very nice sound too.

Idlewild - Make Another World
Came and went this year with a bit of a whimper, but it's ok in my books.

Touted as the English Jack Johnson, one reviewer said 'there's only so much room around the campfire' which kind of sums him up, but he has more emphasis on guitar playing. FA you might like this.

Thanks Mike, I'll check that out. I can always count on you for good recs. You seem to know what I'll like.

Although, I have to say that I tired of Jack Johnson pretty quickly. I still listen to On and On on occasion, but the rest of his CDs were removed from my iPod quite a while ago. I am a sucker for a nice acoustic campfire guitar sound though.

This is exactly why I miss the Tuesday threads.

Tuesday wasn't much of tunesday in these parts. I tried to cram in every meeting and call I could in anticipation of the sickness which has been overtaking me for about a week. The whole office has been felled and I feel like a yak's ass. Today's tunes haven't been a cure-all but they've made life bareable.

Okay, so I listened to Newton on My Space and thought, this is pretty good stuff. He rocks out more than Jack Johnson. Not quite as edgy as Ray Lamontagne. Sounds a little like Sam Roberts at times. All good things, so I'm thinking I'll order the CD if I can pick it up at a reasonable price.

ACK! $33.99 at Amazon.ca. So I wander over to Amazon.com 'cause sometimes the US prices are cheaper. $35.49 on dot com! I guess I'll just wait for the North America release. Those import prices are harsh.

Oh wow, got a surprise in the mail last night, The Early Loudon Wainwright III 1970-1975. Cool. Turned on the stereo this morning with the intent of giving some of those fondly remembered next Bob Dylan early years a listen, and let it warm up for a few minutes while I did something outside, came back in thinking I already had the CD in the hole, hit play and thought, hmmm, this sounds very cool, but definitely not quirky LWIII cool. Oh yeah, that's the great opening "shang vs hanger" from my favorite current rotating slice of Three Mile Pilot, Chief Assassin to the Sinister. No way I'm set to break this vibe, sorry Rae, gonna happen soon, but not right now

Well...I can't speak for all the drummers in Nova Scotia...

I'm glad that you enjoyed the songs. The recording quality of the CD is very good. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, one of my favourite songs from the CD, Edmonton, isn't on her myspace site.
